Like a number of these reviewers, I bought this bass mail order, having never previously played it. I have bought some decent basses, and I have bought some real stinkers. I have been wary of 5-strings since my fiasco with a certain Fender, but my new band required all of the range and flexibility of a good 5-string. This work of art is all I could have hoped for. I bought the Deluxe, which is simply fantastic to look at. The neck is comfy, perhaps a bit wide for some, but very thin, allowing your hand to manipulate it with ease. This bass plays as fast you could want, something I wasn't expecting from a 5-string. I anticipated an instrument that was awkward, this is a dream. The body sculpting allows you to access any fret with ease. The action is perfect, low and smooth. This bass was perfectly setup out of the box. I have never had any rattling or technical difficulties. The sound is amazing. The B-string hits with a deep punch that delivers clarity where many basses only register a garbled boom. Slappers will be delighted. These pickups offer all of the range, punch, growl, and simpering smoothness you could ask for. More than that is the playability. The action of the strings is perfectly blended with the body putting the strings in just close enough so that you can easily slap, pop, and thump while keeping your motions tight and precise. This bass makes you a better player. Or maybe it just sounds so good that I started practicing more because I love to hear it. Either way its wonderful. Its worth more than you will pay for it. The build quality is exemplary. I only noticed two tiny imperfections with the fretwork. If you buy this, you will be astounded. To go back and play my G&L would be the worst kind of humiliating torture. This is the best bass I have ever played.

After all the high praises and excellent scores in reviews, I have thought of buying one of these. But I had decided to test it out first at the local store before buying it. The neck is similar to a musicman in thickness and the 22-fret spacing is a bit wider than I'm used to. I noticed also that there is a slight neck dive. Some forums had mentioned this before and is inherent on some jazz bass but I was surprised to see it on a brand new one! The pickups sounded good with options for coil tapping. The actions were set low which is good for slap. But the overall "feel" when playing it is not something I prefer. My older Yamaha TRB1005 was even better in construction and quality, it has thinner neck and has 24-frets for the same 35-inch scale with NO neck dive after owning it for several years. I am disappointed for this Lakland after all the high expectations I had in mind. For the asking price of [$] I expect a fast neck and better quality, and not just good electronics. Also, my options for bass strings will be limited coz this one requires super extra long length since the fitting goes thru the body. I will not be paying this much with these limitations and issues. On the other hand, the tone of this bass is really good and is lighter in weight.

I have been playing bass for over 30 years and i have to say the Lakland 55-02 has to be the best playing and sound 5 string i have ever played. if you are looking for a 5 string bass you have to get a Lakland, you will be happy you did.

what a great bass! great sounding, looking and set up straight out the box. Nice wide comfortable neck for a 5 string and the 35 scale is a major plus.
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
Traded up from 55-01 to 55-02 - I just can't get over the versatility of sounds, (I use half rounds on it) the clarity and articulation and intonation on this instrument - can get it to sound deep and smooth and warm almost like an upright all the way down to the open B string - and the note is always CLEAR if you set you volumes right - a few flips of the knobs and you can cut through anything with a raw ripping edge and shakin the foundations with those lows. Intonation virtually perfect all the way up the neck, and after a few days of playing the neck feels like I've been playing it 20 years. If you don't want to break the back this bass gives you a GREAT bang for the buck. I got black body with maple fretboard and it's my pride and joy - a think of beauty.
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
Very versatile bass guitar. Rich, fat, warm, bottom end, nice nasely mids, and crisp treble, it has a very well rounded sound. Definitley worth the money and is the last bass I will ever need.
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
I have owned alot of basses in my day but this is by far one on the best. The neck is easy in the hand, the tone is so vary it doesn't matter what your looking for this bass will get you there. I like them so much that I brought a fretted & frettless. These basses are going to be in my home for a long time.

Tried different makes and models in this price range. None had a Low B like it...
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
I played my new Lakland Skyline 55-02 this previous weekend for the first time with my band, which plays Rock, Pop, R&B, Blues, Country, Jazz, and Funk. This bass is a tonemiester. I found it to articulate every note with amazing clarity. I also found running the bass as flat as possible seemed to be my favorite setting. The neck was much wider than my other instruments but was very playable. I use a couple of different effects very sparingly on some songs and couldn't believe how rich and present they sounded. The bass sounded very even. The B string sounded balanced with the other strings and was not overly boomy. This is great bass to have in my arsenal. I have heard other great Bass players use Lakland Basses, which is the reason I decided to buy one. I also called the Lakland Factory with some questions and Dan Lakland answered the phone, he was nothing but helpful. He also pointed out that it has the exact same Bartolini pickups, active/passive preamp and Lakland bridge of its american counterpart. I think this a very solid instrument especially in the price range. I like this Bass!!
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
Oh how I wish I would have bought one of these first. I would have saved so much time and frustration playing a great sounding bass rather than finding "the sound". This bass is far and away the best value around and I have found "the sound" once and for all. This bass does it all. It is also one of the quietest basses I have owned, right up there with my Sadowsky and Ken Smith. However, the sound is just awesome, right out of the box. I can't believe this bass is made in Korea. They have done an awesome job and I couldn't be more pleased with the electronics. I plan on buying at least one more of these basses this year (the Deluxe).
Comments about Lakland Skyline 55-02 5-String Bass:
The best B-string I've ever played. It's tight and the clarity is incredible. I've played a lot of high-end basses and finally I'm satisfied. This bass has a great sound. I love playing with the MM (bridge) pickup solo. It's the best bass on the market in its price range. It's probably better than most basses twice the price.
