Truly awesome tool

By Charlie

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

I've had this bass for about a month now and I love it. The weight feels just about right, not too heavy and not too light. I took it out from the box, tuned it and played, nothing else had to be done. The action is very nice, and there is no fret buzz anywhere.
The split pickup sounds very nice; nicer than the J pickup, if you ask me. The J pickup seems to have almost a weaker sound, especially on the A string for some reason.
You have two volume knobs and a tone knob, so you can choose whichever sound you like and they seem to do their job fairly well.
Tuners are decent, they hold the tuning long enough. I had to retune it once or twice during the first several days, due to the strings being new.

If I had to name something negative, it would be the way that the split pickup is mounted on the bass. It has a screw right where my thumbs wants to rest. Its not the most comfortable position, so I have to shift to the side of it, but then i'm left with very little space. But looking at other inexpensive basses - they seem to have the same pickups.

Overall, I really like it. I have the violin sunburst version and it looks incredible. You could never tell that its a "beginner" bass or anything like that. Yamaha really did put a lot of quality in this thing and if I decide to upgrade - I think I'll go for a Yamaha again.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

Found this bass by accident as I remembered that Yamaha had being doing good craftsmanship so I investigated. Big Surprise.

A very, very nice neck- reminded me also of my long time MM Sterling neck-perhaps better.

Don't let the reviewers cite this as a beginner's bass or entry level bass, because of the price. It is made exceptionally well due to superb manufacturing quality and forward thinking design. In the hands of a pro -it sounds fantastic.

I played it thru an Ampeg 4 head with 8x10s and ALSO through a cheap Fender Rumble Practice Amp.

Superb tone. Clear as a bell. No mud. Even sounding across all 4 strings. I jammed on it hard and stayed in tune and I used the new Korg DTR1000 Tuner.

I have expensive iconic basses. This one sounds fantastic and feels great to play finger-style. Bright tone and I love the string tension on the hands. A very friendly bass and will speak to you. Get one.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

Okay- i received this bass from Musicians Friend, and of course, it arrived on time and in excellent condition.
So when i pick it up, i instantly notice the exceptionally well-crafted finish, weight/balance, feel (all good edge work, tuning pegs, volume knobs, etc.). At that moment i could see that this is a very, very well-crafted piece.
Then i played it! and i could not believe the clarity and output of this bass guitar. The Pickups have a very-well defined, quick, and solid tone.
In Short- Absolutely an Incredible instrument... and i'm very impressed.
    <3 thanks again Musicians Friend!

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

I got a very pleasant surprise when I got this bass clear of the packaging and tuned and all and started test driving it. I'd checked one out at a local store and was thoroughly unimpressed. I bought one only for the body--was going to have the crüe at Deadwood Guitars here in Athens (GA) make a custom neck for it and change out most if not all the parts, and 200 Washintons for a nicely finished, comfortable body's a pretty good deal in my book (I have a TRBX504, which is why I knew I liked the body's ergonomics--this one doesn't have the same cutouts, but it's still pretty nice and comfortable--player friendly). But unlike the local sample, I'm not sure I want to mess with the bass I received from Musician's Friend. It's a -whole- lot more of a player than I'd expected! So, yeah ... very pleasantly surprised. I feel like I got a 400 to 450 Washinton (ish) bass for 200 Washintons. Makes sense though--my 504 feels like I bought about twice the bass I paid for as well.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

I use this bass professionally. I was at a shop and thought it looked great, with the mango veneer (mine actually looks book matched).
Had to try it. I've played almost everything over the years and this bass blew me away. The neck fit my hand like it was made custom for it. the action is next to perfect. Had to intonate the E and the D string but no big deal. The finish on the neck and body are first rate, it 'hangs' well, not too heavy so my back don't hurt by the end of the gig. You can get every tone out of it you can imagine. My only gripe is the tone pot, it is very narrow from muddy to bright. Meaning you can turn it like an 1/8 of an inch for most of the tone adjustment within the 340 degree radius. The tuning pegs are good, I rarely have to tune it more than once in a performance, although I may change them out for black finish. You can't beat the price, but don't let that fool ya... this is a well made, great playing instrument.

        Awesome, lightweight, inexpensive bass

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

I knew it would be pretty good with the Yamaha name (I do have a Yamaha acoustic; I've owned Yamaha basses previously, more than a decade ago), but this is much better than I expected. It's cheap, probably made with some cheap components, but they were assembled well. It is setup better, has a smoother/cleaner neck than much more expensive basses. I have a P-Bass (MIM) and a custom built bass from San Diego. This one is at least as good as those. Actually, it definitely is better than those. Easier to play, not having to adjust the setup all the time, stays in tune very well. Awesome.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

I needed a cheap, beater bass for home practice. I originally planned on purchasing a similarly priced Ibanez, but when I saw this on the rack at the store, I knew I was gonna get this instead. Lightweight and comfortable. Smooth, fast neck. Easy to get around on. Comfortable standing or sitting. Sounds great. Great tones. Superior electronics for the price. And a good-looking bass! My only issues are that it really needs a good set up. The intonation is off up the neck. Also, the cheesy plastic knobs stand out in a bad way. Overall, a really great bass for the price.

I was was to be in China for a few months and wanted a practice bass . ( where I purchased mine) The price was good for Yamaha reputation. When I began working with it I was pleasently surprised how smooth and with very fine tones. My intentions were to leave it in China for my next returns. But I like it so much I will take it back to the U.S.A. Just overall comfortable bass.

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

This is my third Yamaha bass (I also have an RBX170 and used to have an RBX270). I really don't have any serious complaints about this one. It feels and plays great. It looks and sounds terrific.

Compared to my RBXes, the TRBX174 is significantly better in several ways. First, the body shape is a bit different, with a less-severe curve in the upper bout that makes it extremely comfortable standing or sitting. Second, I think the stock pickups are light-years better. No noise distinguishable. The P split pickup is round and full, even a bit boomy (benefits from compression). The J pickup is mellow, smooth, not at all nasal (as some bridge pickups can be).

Tuners, strings, bridge, general build quality, fit and finish = all excellent.

EXTREMELY minor gripes - the housing of the P pickup was cast as precise 90-degree angles, which produced a somewhat sharp corner, right where I want a rounded edge. I spent a minute with a nail file and the problem was gone. The action out of the box was a bit low for me, and again, it took barely a minute to adjust to where it feels right.

I LOVE the look of the black headstock with just the tuning-fork logo, no words anywhere on the instrument. Cool and mysterious.

I've played guitar for many years, but the church band asked me to switch and play bass (we lost our bassist). This thing is nice. It's everything I wanted, great tone, easy to play, fast and comfortable neck. Just touch the string behind the fret and you get the note. Quality look and feel. This was my first Yamaha instrument, but now I'm thinking of adding a Yamaha guitar.

I bought this bass as a beater bass. A practice bass that I could pick up and throw around at home and not worry about dinging it up. Well.... it has exceeded my expectations! I've been using it on outdoor duo and trio gigs and it sounds great! Lots of useful tones, and I don't have to worry if it's a little damp or humid. We tune down a half a step and it handles that really well. We play on a small stage so the fact that it's light, compact and comfortable makes it ideal for this application. Great practice bass too!

Comments about Yamaha TRBX174 Electric Bass Guitar:

After building myself an in home studio, I quickly realized the only thing i was missing was a bass. Swung over to a local store (sorry MF, i was in a rush!) and checked out their large selection. Being that i'm a drummer, I was looking for apparent quality as I didn't much know the specifics or traits that i should be mindful of. The price tag, finish, weight and balance of this thing caught my eye. I toyed around with it for a moment and purchased it about 15 minutes later. I would be lying if i said this was the most played piece in my studio - BUT whenever i do pick it up i am always impressed. Plugging it directly in to a preamp and hitting record with this thing is a dream. You can go from a very washy sound to some solid attack with the knobs. Contrary to one of the previous comments, it does have a volume knob. As i have developed my skills in the studio and on a guitar/bass I have never felt beyond or limited by this guitar. Exceptional piece, I can say with confidence that if bass was my main instrument, i would love to have this guitar as a backup. But for someone like me?.....perfect.

This is my first bass and I like it. The only bad thing i can think of is there is no volume knob.
