This has practically every scale you'd ever want to play, unless you can think up some of your own! A concise yet complicated explanation of music. I've seen modal theory explained a bit easier but, afterall, theory can be difficult to understand at first. I'm definitely still learning. This is a great book! Includes keyboard patterns, sweeping patterns and complete fretboard patterns, together with a mode finder and other useful information. I would recommend this for any level of guitarist; however, for a beginner, just skip over the first parts about the theory for a while and start playing the patterns. No, this book won't teach you "technique", except that by applying the theory and playing the scales, the fretboard opens up and you build finger strength, speed and dexterity. This is the most complete scale book I've found and it helps me to understand each scale, the modes and when to play them in a chord progression. Excellent, excellent book!

This book has exactly what I hate most in other books, only it has more of them: scales! Plain old scale patterns that you can practice up and down to learn the fretboard, but no exercises illustrating how you might apply them to create interesting music. No licks that you can get ideas from, no useful discussion of how to use the various scales. How does this help you write actual music? I've learned every damn scale and mode out there, from blues to Hungarian, but one thing remains certain: scales are not real music! If you're a serious musician, then this is several hundred pages of precisely what you don't need. I suppose if you're a pro or semi-pro who just wants to brush up on his pattern knowledge so he can speed up or expand his library of licks, then this might be a worthwhile buy. But otherwise, forget it.

Review

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

My younger brother has a bunch of these so I decided to look them over today. This one in particular is a complete waste of paper. You could literally fit all the information contained inside in a few pages. There is no helpful text on real world application. In my humble opinion fretboard diagrams are a terrible tool for learning scales. Knowing positions is nice but without any theory on application it's meaningless.Especially for the beginner guitarist who tend to purchase these things.

Too much paper

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

This book is absolutely great. It starts with a nice little theory lesson that helps guitarists better communicate in terms of general music theory. More importantly, it is a great reference tool for scales and modes. I bought this book, because I thought I was getting 200+ pages of scales and modes with something different on each page. However, it is incredibly redundant as it shows the fretboard positions for every single key for that scale. It's a waste of paper, as the idea of knowing scales on a guitar is to know the pattern, roots, and then you can figure out where to go on the neck. I'm pretty sure the book preaches this point, too, and it only printed the redundancies for the beginners, but it is a waste of paper.

Great Book!!

By Hardrock

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

This book is great. It is like a scale encyclopidia. It will teach you how to make the scales with formulas, so there really isn't that much to memorize. It can be a little confusing at first, but if you read over it slowly, it will make sense. Great buy!!

Everything you need to play

By MetalHead-otzt-

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

This book probably has more scales than Andres Segovia (excuse my poor spelling, if it applies) himself knows. Majors... Minors... Hungarian, Egyptian... Enigmatic... probably Canadian (lol) anyway, this book is a great resource and learning aid. Dont expect it to teach you how to use them. You should be able to do that if you have some feel for the instrument. Still, this is one of the top things on my xmas wishlist. FYI the roots are listed on the pages, in the diagrams, they are the circles numbered "1." Great Buy.

great reference book

By Generator

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

Lets face it: There are so many scale books out there all competeing for your attention and your much valued cash. This book, for my money, presents the best variety of scales and fingerings and actually gives you a whole heck of a lot of theory too. I gave it a perfect score on value because for this price, you're not going to find a book that's giving you 5, 6, 7 & 8 note scales, their fingerings all over the fretboard and theory on chord & arpeggio construction. Even if you've never played a scale before, this book will have you running scales in no time. The layout is a bit scary at first, but if you take the time to go through the writer's guidelines in the beginning, it shouldn't be too scary.

This Book is a Godsend /m/

By Stubbszilla

from Philly PA

Comments about Carl Fischer Guitar Grimoire Book:

This book has taught me so much since I got got it this past christmas. I already had full knowledge of the 7 normal modes on guitar but this opened my mind to all sorts of great scales to use for soloing and songwriting. So far my fave is Phyrgian Major, METAL, anyway get this book if you play guitar its as essential as owning a strap.
