Comments about Hal Leonard John Pizzarelli - Exploring Jazz Guitar Instructional (DVD):
John has an uncanny ability of making complex chord voicings easy to grasp. His demos are fun and very inspiring. It's like having a private lesson with Peyton Manning -- explaining the system he has developed to read complex pass defenses and throw perfect completions. Bucky should be very proud of his son. I've been teaching and playing guitar for 50 years. I earned a Master's degree in Classical guitar performance and have spent nearly four decades teaching all styles of guitar. I still play gigs 2-3 nights a week. When I see John's relaxed playing style, and his technical finesse, it makes me wish I had learned John's chord inversions and jazz voicings (which he obviously stole from his papa) right from the start. NO - This DVD won't teach you how to read charts, or how to memorize solos from Django recordings. However, if you patiently go through these lessons and learn John's examples, it will be like having a jazz guitar light bulb switch on in your brain. For under $30 bucks, you'll receive the equivalent of taking a semester of jazz guitar lessons at a university, without the parking hassles.
Frankly, I can't wait for John's next DVD, which he jokes about several times in this one.
Thanks a million Mr. Pizzarelli. I'm now a huge fan for life...
PS - Bucky gave me a guitar lesson at the Odessa Jazz Festival in the mid- 90's. They're both great teachers, performers, and entertainers. Onward!!! Trip Hunt
