Comments about Hal Leonard The Chord Wheel:
This tool allows you to quickly and visually dial in to a scale and know which chords work well together. It also indicates alternate chords (seventh, ninth, etc.) and less common incidentals. You can also use it to quickly identify the appropriate sharps or flats for the current scale for lead and melody to accompany the chords.
I have read several music theory books which all seemed to give me a half developed comprehension of the theory. But, this tool really helped me to put some of that theory to use. Then the ideas expressed in those other books (and this one) really seemed to click, and suddenly I was like, "Wow, I get it now!".
The wheel is only in the Major scales, but there is some explanation towards the end of the book which infers that by specific chord selection you will actually be playing in other scales like the relative minor. But, there is not an in depth explanation of how to use this to understand other scales.
Just get this tool. Start playing around with the chord combinations and you'll see how they all go together so well. You're songwriting will improve and you'll be branching out into scales that previously you didn't.
You can also use this to help with song transposition. Also, DJ's can use this to get a better understanding of mixing using the circle of fifths.
I liked this so much I bought one for each member of my band!
