OVERVIEW

The inimitable Holton Farkas!

The Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn is praised by professional musicians and by academics for its truly centered tone. With a centered tone, even the most difficult passages become easier to play. This particular H179 is regarded as the flagship of the Holton line. An instrument designed for the œbig horn artist, the H179 has a dark, rich sound. Its velvety tone is complemented by a slight ringing overtone. The large tapered tubing and grand throat on the instrument enhance the dark tone and make it bigger and fuller. The H179 features a .468 bore, a 12-1/4 hand-hammered nickel silver bell, and a large throated .310 nickel silver venture. Noiseless string action creates easeful, quiet playing. The instrument also has solid nickel silver slides inside and outside along with tapered hand-lapped brass valve rotors. In solid nickel silver, the Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn has even greater depth and projection making it a truly trusted professional horn.

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

My parents purchased my Holton Farkas fixed bell model 179 when I was in high school 42 years ago. (OK. Don't count.) I give credit to it for helping me achieve All-State status those last two years in band. Although I was a piano major in college, I minored in French horn, and my Holton 179 served me well. I played in the Brass Quintet, the Woodwind Quintet, the Brass Ensemble, the Band, and I took private lessons. After college, I played in the area Symphonic Band (composed of area music directors and other musicians) for years. All throughout, I was able to handle whatever music the group was playing. My horn has a versatility limited only by the strength of its player and the nuances of the mouthpiece used. I love it! During college, a Giardinelli C15 mouthpiece gave me the upper range I needed. Now, after a hiatus of eleven years, the Giardinelli doesn't give me the sound I want. I purchased a practice mute (a Bremner Shhh! Mute), which requires much more air than I've ever been used to pushing. With age comes confidence and power and I am finally able to produce that deep rich 'horn' tone - with practice and a change of mouthpiece to a Bach 15. I didn't realize my Holton could sound this beautiful! I'm not a pro. But this gorgeous horn has been with me most of my life and it has more than held up to whatever I've been able to play! The only negative is that the valves have been "clack-y" sounding. The latest repair technician was able to fix it with a good ultrasonic clean and a special mix of rotor oil - sort of like special motor oil for older cars.

played it for 13 years and counting

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I have been playing my holton 179 for 13 years and it is still an absolutely fantastic horn. It is in excellent shape, never having had any sort of problems...I know my high school used Atkinson horns and had sautering come undone or valve problems and what-not. I have to say that yes, this horn is more expensive than some of the other horns you can get, but ANY holton is worth it. The ease of play with this horn is fantastic, and the tone is like nothing else. It sounds FANTASTIC. I have always loved the deep, darker, less brassy sounding horns, and this one is phenomenal....absolutely love it. Highly recommend this horn to anyone.

This instrument, to put it bluntly, is awesome! I've had mine for about 2 years now and it has never let me down. It has the best tone quality I have ever heard and I just love it! If you're deciding what brand of horn you should buy definatly put the Holton on the top of your list.

    Good, rich sound...

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

Purchased the H179 double horn second hand in high school. Was afraid at first, but the horn has a great sound. Past horns I've used were difficult to work with and would commonly have a tinny sound quality but the Farkas has a beautiful rich tone and it's a sound that is adaptable to every style, every piece, I've had the chance to play. I highly recommend it... I've had my horn for a number of years now and I am never going to give it up-- it's too good of an instrument and it has a wonderful sound quality.

    This is the best!

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

This is a great French horn for a serious player. I got a used one when I entered 8th grade and I am going to use it through college also. Before I only played the school's instrument; this instrument is very good and will last a long time. Besides, it is very beautiful as well and has a spit valve that is easy to use (my old horns didn't have them and I'm grateful I have one now!)

    Wonderful Horn!

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

This horn is an excellent horn with a beautiful sound. It is by far the best horn I have ever played on. The high notes are so open but i have had trouble getting them because the last horn I played on was not a very open feeling horn. I would suggest it be played by anyone who wants a quality sounding as well as a beautiful looking horn!

    perfect tone for me

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I have been playing only for two and a half years and I have played only a few horns but this horn has suprised me. I just barely got this horn at my school and my insructer was amazed at how intoxicating the tone and feel of it is. I for one was surprized that it acutually locked in to higher notes compared to the old ones. I am going to defenatly purchase this one when i get up to my college years and buy a marching french horn for highschool and on but I will use this one untill my director makes me give it back for sure.

    Gorgeous horn, gorgeous tone

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

Our school recently purchased one of these horns for our horn section and as our 1st chair player has her own horn, it went to me, 2nd chair. It was honestly one of the most wonderful experiances of my life to pick this horn up and play it for the first time. I have played 5 horns in my horn career thus far, and I would gladly trade all five previous ones for this one. It's tone is absolutely gorgeous; without a doubt one of, if not the best horn I've ever heard and/or played. This horn plays high notes with greater ease than other horns I have played; I hit an E above the staff with just a marginal amount of effort. It's low tones are gorgeous as well; you can get down into the land of the trombone on it. I plan on buying one of these horns so I can take it with me on to college after high school. I would recommend this horn to any serious player out there. Unless of course, you dislike excellent sound.

Comments about Holton H179 Farkas Series Fixed Bell Double Horn:

I played a horn like this one for three years in my high school and loved every minute of it. I was able to play fast and even the higher passages with ease. the only problem I had was the string on the thumb rotor: it kept breaking. Aside from that, this is an awesome horn for a higher level student or a professional musician.

I've owned my horn for about 3 months now and played a rental H179 before I bought my own. This horn is great for people from beginners to college level or even professionals. I'm very impressed with the overall performance of this horn.
