      Concert Band Use

      By Mike B.-KEsAO

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Zildjian Traditional Orchestral Gong:

After 40 years of listening to and playing in bands and orchestras I have heard many gongs/tam-tams. 12"- 48", thick/thin, hard/soft mallets, high on a stand or hung in a wash tub of water- each instrument has it's uses and the selection you perform will dictate which is appropriate. Does it require ominous foreshadowing, a bigger crash than your cymbals can deliver, a 'punch' in the middle of a ff section, or a wave of sound that washes over the ensemble and engulfs the the audience in a world of white noise?Assuming you are only going to purchase 1 instrument, your choice should be a middle-of-the-road instrument in order to assure the most flexibility. I have found Zildjian's 34" to be a happy medium. The sound clips provided by Musician's Friend for the 30", 34", and 40" are fairly accurate. All are capable of producing a wash loud enough to be heard over a 100 person ensemble and moderately fill any hall up to 1000 seats. The 30" lacks a strong fundamental when struck hard, i.e. the high wash overpowers the low pitch. A softer mallet at dynamics under forte reduces this tendency. Being smaller, it can be played along with a pair of hand-helds to create a 'super-crash' and then quickly dampened by the players torso. If you're looking for a solid tone at ffff this just doesn't make it.The 34" DOES have an audible fundamental when warmed up and then played with a heavy (3-puck) mallet. It is small enough to be used with high-powered (loud) jazz ensembles for production numbers (Maleguena), yet large enough to be used in 'the pit' of your field show band. The decay is long- even with a full 'body damp', so you can't just let it fade at the end of a piece- the show will be 2 minutes longer! If you've got a LARGE group and several grand, consider 2 gongs. A 40" or 48" gives massive/powerful waves of sound that grow from within the ensemble. They don't speak fast; start warm-up 5 seconds before the strike. The strike (sometimes several are required to reach max volume) needs to anticipate the written rhythm by several beats in order to have the gong reach climax with the rest of the group; the same thing is done with a large suspended cymbal. The second would be a smaller 24" or 26" (maybe a heavy 22") - great for a 'punch' or rolls to fatten up cymbal work. It's small enough to be a large water gong or used for special effects. Anything smaller sounds like a toy or 'dinner gong' and should be used in non-musical venues.

      A Great Gong

      By KournProductions

Comments about Zildjian Traditional Orchestral Gong:

I have owned this gong for a little over five months now, and have used it in almost every composition made by my band. I own the 26" model, and its size makes no difference in the the fundamentals that this gong brings out compared to the bigger gongs. Its pitch is also quite deep for being only 26 inches. The Zildjian gong has a very trashy, dark sound to it with many overtones. Its note sustains for quite a while as well. I recommend this instrument to someone who is looking to bring a classical or raw sound to their musical environment.Sizes that I recommend: 30"/34"

      Awesome sound

      By psychodrummer-1w-PM

Comments about Zildjian Traditional Orchestral Gong:

Incredible gong. I own the 40" and it is one of the loudest, biggest sounding gongs that I have ever heard. But although it can be played very loud, it is still quite sensitive when struck lightly with a soft mallet. Very dark and mysterious sounding. A little expensive for not coming with a stand or mallet, but the sound is definitely worth it. Also, be prepared: This is not a light instrument. It must weigh around 40 pounds or more without the stand. My advice would be to get a sturdy bag for it and a stand with casters, then be prepared to lift, but only if you want to bring this thing around to gigs. That being said, you may want to go for one of the smaller models, but these gongs are definitely high quality.
