Meinl African Djembe with Bag

As a hand drumming instructor and performer, I have worked with djembes  of all types, from those hand crafted in West Africa to those made  entirely of artificial materials.  I have been buying a lot of drums to  use when I teach drum classes, and I need instruments that have 1) a good  sound, 2)  consistent quality, 3) rugged construction and 4) a reasonable  price.  I have found these Meinl djembes to fit these requirements  very well.  The wood is plantation grown mahogany -- solid, but not as  heavy as regular mahogany (which is very expensive).  The rope is heavy  duty and has lots of verticals, which means the tension is well  distributed on the head.  The goatskin could be a tad thicker, but when  tuned up properly, the heads have a crisp dry slap without nasty ringing,  and a deep resonant bass note.  You'll find that by the time the drum gets  shipped from Indonesia, the head won't be at full tension and the drum  will need to be tuned up.  Instructions are included on tuning (pulling  diamonds), but if you've never done this, find someone who knows how.   The bag that comes with the drum is well built, has thick padding,  sturdy straps and a thick top that protects the drum head nicely.  I now  own 5 of these djembes, 1 of the XL (12") and 4 of the L (10") and am  very pleased with them.

I am normally a kit drummer, I just got into hand percussion for accustic worship style of playing just recently. I wanted to add a djembe to my hand drum arsenal. I researched for weeks what I wanted and the different price rages. I wanted something that I thought was just a little different than what other drummers had around here, but I also wanted it to look and sound top notch. I took my time and finally decided on this drum. I was not disappointed at all when it came. It was better looking than I could imagine. Then I played it. WOW! The low bass sound sings and is very present. I love everything about this drum.
