Meinl

The instrument that accompanies Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art/dance.

The Meinl Berimbau is a traditional African instrument that is commonly used in the music of Brazil and other South American countries. It is the staple instrument of capoeira, the famous martial arts dance. The thin striker and a caxixi are held in the right hand, while the left hand supports the bow and modulates the string with a small metal disc. The whole Berimbau is moved off and on the abdomen, opening and closing the resonant gourd, for a captivating wah-wah effect.

    Comments about Meinl Fiberglass Berimbau:

The motivation in getting this Meinl berimbau was seeing enough wooden/traditionally made berimbaus cracking over time, requiring the need for reinforcement and repair, which takes away from the integrity of the instrument, involving sound, flexibility, and durability, which happened with my previous berimbau. Reading that the Meinl berimbau's composition is fiberglass, my worries of the risk for my berimbau cracking and losing it's flexibility went away. Paying a bit extra for a prolonged life of a berimbau is worth it. Upon reception of my berimbau, I received exactly what I expected and even more, although some colleagues were skeptical about the authenticity of the sound it would have, however I decided to take that leap of faith and get one. My one and only wish or idea is to make the baqueta (striking stick) and caxixi (shaker) also from fiberglass, since these accessories are subject to cracking as a traditional wooden berimbau. Thanks.

    Comments about Meinl Fiberglass Berimbau:

I guess all the other Capoeira players are too embarrassed to admit they bought this. I fully expect everyone I meet to make fun of it for not being "authentic" enough. Well, fortunately I have no shame, so I'll write a much needed review! I got it because I wanted a very durable Berimbau, and it seems to be. I love Meinl products already, having some other instruments from them. You can trust the brand for sure. Anyway, it's difficult to tell exactly what to expect from the photos. I was kind of surprised by what it turned out to be. First off, it's a shorty. It's only about 4 feet long. The Cabaa is large; seems like a Gunga to me. Also, I was expecting it to be smooth and sleek, but the whole thing is in fact molded off of a hand carved instrument, so there are knots and carvings on the Verga. The Arame attachments make me a little nervous up top as it has no leather pad at the end, I may have to add that myself rather than risk damage. The black section you see in the photo is actually a black cord that's wound around like a hundred times. Honestly, I had theorized that area to be a no slip zone of rubber, but not the case. The same type of cord forms the bridge attaching the Cabaa to the Verga. I reinforced it with some extra cord I had to prevent slippage. The accessories, but nothing remarkable about them. The carry case is a nice thought, but isn't big enough for the assembled unit, so not as useful. are nice, but Okay, so it wasn't quite what I expected, but am I upset? No, and it's because it sounds absolutely beautiful. I knew this from having a synthetic body guitar, but you get stunning tone and sustain from fiberglass instruments. It is bold and rich in it's tone, sounding like the finest recordings you've heard. Truly studio quality. So really, what else matters. Sorry that I didn't carve it myself from a Biriba tree harvested on a full moon, you can curse me all you like. I'll still be sounding like a million and it won't be crumbling apart in a year.
