Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

Hi-Hats are decent and the crash ride is pretty good too. Awesome bell sounds on both. Rides nice. Crash has a different but very usefull sound if you experiment a bit and have other cymbals. It's almost a crash-ride-splash. Overall, it's got some very nice tones.

Not Bad

Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

Honestly, these cymbals aren't so bad. I mean they have a good glossy look and clean sound. Clearly the best of the HCS series. Some of the Meinl cymbals can bend which is overall not good, but these have a nice strength to them and feel that they might last for a long time. Although the price is just over high for the Meinl HCS series, It's very good for starter drummers who are looking to start out with a descent set up.

not too bad!

Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

i was impressed with the overall quality of the cymbals i was expecting thin pieces of crap. but they can take a hit and sound great while doing so!
the hi hats arent very bright in my opinion the crash/ride is pretty good.
i play metal so im a pretty hard hitter. and other then scuffs these things are holding up pretty darn well.
it should be a crime to pass this up.

Affordable and Effective

Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

Cymbals were an afterthought when I purchased my new set, so -- low on cash after purchasing the shells and hardware -- I bought these on sale. I didn't expect much besides a functional crash and hi-hat to tide me over until I could save up for higher end cymbals. I ended up pleasantly surprised, though. The crash has a nice, warm and slightly dark sound to it. It records well, too, without any apparent overtones on tape. The hi-hats aren't anything special but they do have a pretty good sizzle.Overall, these are perfectly acceptable cymbals for any drummer looking for a deal. And while I will be replacing the hi-hats eventually, the crash will be staying in my lineup of crashes and rides.

Pros

  • Cheap

Cons

  • Flat Sound
  • Not Responsive

Best Uses

  • Band practice
  • Open Mic Nights

Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

I bought a full set of the Meinl HCS cymbals to take to open mic nights so the inexperienced drummers wouldn't destroy my AAX and HHX cymbals. They work good for that purpose and really only for that purpose. I would recommend these cymbals to any new comer to the percussion world. I personally think they sound better than the Planet Zs, or even Sabian B8s but that isn't saying too much lol. For the price, there are no complaints. I think the hi hats actually sound decent and so does the ride with a little bit of vinyl tape on the underside to control the overtones. As for the crashes, well, that is a different story. If you are recording or even playing live in a band, I would not recommend them but if you are just jamming or playing in a garage band, why not, it's a good choice.

If you have the money, buy some K's, AA's, AAX's, HHX's or Byzances. You will not be disappointed.

My old drum instructor once told me to put forth more money for better cymbals and not better drums. Good sounding cymbals make all the difference and the heads on the drums can be adjusted for different sounds no matter what the shells are made of. Good quality cymbals should last you a lifetime too.

These can barely be called Cymbals...

      By RShack SB 123

Comments about Meinl HCS 14"/18" Cymbal Set:

I play on these cymbals where my band rehearses. Not by choice, but due to the fact that these are there. The High hats are ok, very quiet but they have a decent sound. The Crash ride, on the other hand, is the worst cymbal (a term which gives it too much respect) that I have ever heard or played. It doesn't ring, its like hitting a random chunk of metal with no musical qualities.
