OVERVIEW

A cricket sound effect.

4 solid steel balls hit a cylindrical metal rod in quick succession, producing the realistic sound of crickets at night. A well-balanced grip makes it easy to hold and play.

A great effect, and it's great fun to jam along with the crickets on a hot summer night.

Meinl Makes a great Cricket

By mikeg-bL.X_

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

I have purchased several Meinl products and they've all been well made and stand up to the rigors of gigging. The Night Cricket "when used correctly" will produce a pretty realistic sounding cricket effect. I've used it when we didn't get much of a response after a song. At least we get a laugh out of 'em.

Why such low ratings?

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

I've used this instrument many times, in various situations, and I've never experienced any sort of problems with it. If you use it the way it's meant to be used and don't expect it to do things it was never meant to do then you shouldn't be disappointed at all.

Works well in the right setting

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

It produces a very bright metallic sound, which works well to cut through. Doesn't play quietly very well, but possible with some practice. Great effect trap.

Interesting Design

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

This instrument uses ball bearings that travel in different length holes, drilled in the wooden block, to create a trill as the bearings are slung to strike the metal tube. First the metal tube has a slit in it and can be rotated to change the sound. Second the trill speed, as other have said, seems to be too fast to sound like a cricket, and technique is key to achieving the sound.
It has 4 bearings as opposed to LP's version which only has 3.
I had to work on mine, one of the holes needed sanding and I used some Johnsons Paste Wax, to free up one of the bearings.
Not as good as some of their other products.

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

The sound of this cricket device is very sharp- which may be good for cutting through other instruments but it sounds metallic and ugly on its own. You just shake the handle and the metal balls hit a metal bar. In the photo it looks like you might be able to spin the unit creating more gentle squeaks- but it does not. It's not a gentle trill- do you remember kabangers? I bought this hoping to be able to add some nature ambiance to my music. I think one would be much better off with those wooden cricket rasps- much more realistic. Great idea but falls short.

Comments about Meinl The Night Cricket Sound Effect:

This instrument will produce a certain nice cricket sound (or sounds), if the player learns how to manipulate it by using slow (or fast) syncopated hand/wrist control.
