Comments about Sabian XSR Series Rock Crash Cymbal:

I picked up this cymbal because it was cheap, and I needed a new crash for my live gigs. I had an 18in Zildjian K Custom Dark Crash that I picked up used for just a little more than what this cymbal cost me, in excellent condition, and I loved it! Unfortunately, It had been a crash I'd had for years and it finally developed a crack on the edge. The crack developed into a huge chip, and well the rest is history. It began to sound very trashy and had lost some of the sustain it previously had. It would literally decay after 2 seconds of hitting it. Not good in a live situation.
Anyway, the reason I bring this up, is because that cymbal would sing by just tapping it. It was amazing! I barely had to hit it to get a nice crash sound. It also had a nice ping and bell as well. It's a great cymbal that I recommend to ANYBODY if you want a great sounding cymbal, that's dark, but not completely bone dry like Matt Garstka's.
This XSr cymbal was an immediate change. In order to get a decent crash sound out of it, you have to hit it REALLY hard. It's not a terrible cymbal by any means, it's just a huge step down from what I'm used to. It's also very loud to begin with, so that's something to think about. I understood it was to replace the XS20's, but this doesn't sound as great as they did. Mildly disappointing.
I'd recommend this cymbal to amateurs or to someone who just needs a cymbal to bash on in their garage. If you're a professional or gigging drummer, I'd recommend investing in either the Zildjian K's, Sabian AAX's, Sabian HHX's, or the Meinl Byzance, even if you have to get them used because of their hefty price tag. The sound really is that noticeably different!
