Best Djembe for Under $150

By Andrew Elliott

from Portland, Oregon

Comments about Toca Freestyle Antique-Finish Djembe:

I just bought my second one. You can't go wrong here. But, do shop around. The prices on these vary by as much as $50 for the identical drum.
I'm only a beginning djembe player. But, I already own three djembes: 14" Remo Earth Tone, 11" genuine hand-carved African, and 10" Toca Freestyle Antique-Finish Djembe. Each one has its own strong and weak points. This 10" Toca Freestyle has a higher pitch overall, the bass tone reminds me of the high tom-tom on a five-piece drum kit. It has a nice tone, and the slap is less metallic sounding and warmer than the slap I get from my hand-carved African djembe. It is not the same set of sounds you get from a hand-carved African djembe. But, the sounds are very useful in folk music.
Tonally I rate this djembe very good. Structurally I rate it good, not very good. The shell is tough because it's made from some sort of polymer. But, the raised design around it easily breaks off if the djembe isn't transported in a padded case. So, it's a fragile in that way. The 10" model is too short to just rest it on the floor. It has to be held between the player's legs, and the tuning lugs dig into the player's legs unless it's held just right. The upside-down tuners require an open-end wrench to tune. A standard drum key does not fit.
This is the best "under-$150" djembe I've tried so far. I like it better than the Remo Earth Tones djembes because it's a lot lighter to carry. You'll need a back brace to carry a 14" Remo Earth Tones around. It's weather resistant. It's fairly easy to tune. (The upside-down tuners are a bit awkward to tune, but not horrible.)

handy djembe for the road

Comments about Toca Freestyle Antique-Finish Djembe:

This light-weight djembe looks good and has a nicely-cutting mid range sound. The sound is not as deep as I hoped from a 14" head. I've found that for deep sounds you cannot beat a heavy, hand-carved African djembe. But I'm happy with this Toca. I don't use the bag - which was automatically included w the 14" model - because I just place it in my trunk and zoom to the drum circle. At one year of use it has a few scuffs but remains a valued member of the family. Found that a simple 3" wide nylon baggage strap enables me to carry it comfortably and even to play while standing up.
