Comments about Toca Freestyle Djun Djun with Beaters:
This is a awesome drum with great sound. The company ships fast. I order on a Saturday and had my drum by Wednesday.
I have all 3 drums ( Dundunba ) ( Sangban ) ( Kenkeni ) All 3 drums sound good togather or by themselves...
Comments about Toca Freestyle Djun Djun with Beaters:
I teach at an elementary school. These drums look cool and serve our purpose well. They are lighter wight; therefore easy to manage--and you don't have to worry abaout the wood ever spliting in a dry climate. They sound similar to duns I've seen on youtube clips.
Comments about Toca Freestyle Djun Djun with Beaters:
Proper "duns" are quite expensive, upwards of $1200 for a full set (kenkeni, sangban, and dundunba). These Toca dunduns are OK. They definitely lack that deep and warm sound that comes from single-piece wooden dununs carved out of tree trunks. Most traditional dundun I've come across still have the hair on the cow skins, which helps dampen some of those higher ringing sounds. The Toca dununs do not have this. I'm not sure if it's because of this, or because of the thin PVC shell, but the sound ends up being a bit "ringy", especially if you use the mallets they provide. I've found that felt-tipped mallets are the closest these drums will ever come to a true African sound. That said, as a musician on a budget, I must give Toca credit for giving people like myself even the option to own a full set of duns. At this price, I'm forced to eat some of my initial complaints. Then again, those hand-carved African drums do sound great.
