OVERVIEW

The portable kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit.

The A400 from Traps Drums is a portable drum kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit. The drums are constructed from high-quality, durable A.B.S. and are fitted with Remo heads, steel counter hoops, and are tuned with the traditional multi-screw tuning system. This also allows the use of pads for silent practicing. The rack system that the drums and hardware fit to is made from substantial steel tubing which means that everything stays exactly where it's put when the kit is set up and doesn't move.

Geoff Nicholls of Rhythm Magazine asked in 2005: "Can a shell-less kit ever stand in for the real thing?" He concluded: "Shell-less kits are a viable alternative and Traps A400 is easily the best so far."

Rack system
The A400 rack-mounting system is made from sturdy large-diameter chromed steel tubing. The kit can easily be set up for either left- or right-handed players using the supplied tough ABS multifunctional joints.

When set up, the rack is very strong and, once fitted with the supplied four large rubber feet, stays where it's placed and doesn't move. This provides a noticeable improvement in playability compared to other portable drum sets in this price bracket.

Top Quality Hardware
The A400 comes fitted with quality hardware as standard. This includes hi-hat and kick drum pedals that are both rugged and free moving. Also included is a snare basket, boom cymbal arms (which can be slid into the frame for easy storage).

The hardware is both reliable and distinctive with black-painted footplates and a "Traps" embossed seat squab. They also feature quality chain drives, memory locks, expansion springs and clutches.

12" snare drum
The A400 12" snare drum has a very crisp sound as a result of the high-quality ABS molding combined with the chrome-plated steel counter hoops, Remo Ambassador heads, and 8 square-headed tension screws. This all results in a snare that's easy to tune and capable of cutting rim shots and thick X-stick sounds. The drum also features a sturdy throw-off with a positive feel and a knob at the opposite side of the drum for adjusting the stretch in the snares. This means that the A400 snare has the additional ability to produce Latin/world percussion sounds or to function as an additional tom.

10", 12", and 14" toms
The A400 toms are manufactured from a tough ABS molding which is further strengthened by a triple-flange counter hoop, then to complete the toms, they are fitted with top-quality Remo Pinstripe heads. As with all the A400 drums, an industry-standard multi-screw tuning system is used.

All this attention to detail results in a quality sound never before heard in a portable kit.

20" kick drum
The A400 20" kick drum is an uncompromising double-headed design fitted with a UT Powerstroke 3 drumhead on the back and Remo Ebony drumhead on the front printed with the Traps logo. It is also fitted with chrome-plated steel hoops.

Its shell is made from a robust high-quality injection-molded A.B.S. fitted with custom dual-mounting points ideally suited to mounting in the A400 rack mount system. A strong metal plate is fitted to bottom of the rear counter hoop so that when the kick pedal is fitted, the beater strikes the head at the optimum position--top of the upstroke.

Cymbals not included.

FEATURES This kit contains:
  • A set of 5 traps drums
  • Hi-hat stand
  • Kick pedal
  • A400-rack: An A400 rack system excluding all drums and pedals. An ideal upgrade system for mounting third-party drums correctly
  • A400-snare: A single A400 snare drum with throw-off
  • A400-tom10: A single 10" A400 tom
  • A400-tom12: A single 12" A400 tom

The snare has a nasty ring but a strategically placed moongel does the trick--loosen the snare wires for a "fatter" sound. Loosen the heads on the toms all the way and then tighten the screws up one by one just enuff to feel tension. The bass is the most challenging to get a decent sound--invest in the Remo Muffl ring and attach it to the batter head--DON'T put anything inside. Again, tighten the batter head just enuff to feel tension...tighten the resonant (black) head slightly more than the batter. Use 2 Moongels on the res head--one on either side.

I had initially given this a great review, then a good review. Now a month later, my advice is stay away. The portability concept is great - there's nothing out there like it. The downside is, parts on no available. If something goes wrong you have to swap out the ENTIRE KIT for another one. And what could go wrong? What went wrong in my case was that the plastic "shell" cracked at two of the tuning lugs on the 12" tom. MF was great to work with "Just return it, and you can order another one." Well, I've done the first part for sure, but I WILL NOT be ordering another one. A hint for any budding entrepreneurs out there: If you took this concept and made the drum "shells" out of cast aluminum or military grade plastic (such as they use on military rifles), I think every gigging drummer would own one.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

Replaced the tom batters w/Remo clear Emperors for a little more attack. I'm triggering the kick and using my own snare on a stand and using the stock snare as an ashtray LOL! Mic everything and......WOW! Yep...this kit delivers. You have to hear it to believe it. And setup is a breeze. I carry 90% of my kit into the venue with one hand and I can set up on a postage stamp if need be. Simply amazing.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I have this set and I have tried using it on a few jobs and find it lacking in projection, tone and limited setup. That said, mics and ingenuity can solve most of the problems. Contact pickups don't seem to work very well. I usually play my kits with the rack toms to the left of my Bass drum. The Traps rack has very few options for placement of the Toms. I placed the Bass drum on a mini set of legs and mounted the Rack toms on a double tom floor stand. I mounted the Floor tom to my Ride cymbal stand, using a Yamaha Tom Mount and a clamp. This setup works for me and is quite portable. All I have to carry is the four Traps drums, Double Tom stand with a built in Cymbal stand, one Cymbal stand, Hi Hat stand and a Lightweight Snare stand. I tried four sets of heads and settled on the Evans EC2 heads. Be warned, very few Bass drum heads will fit into the collar of the metal Bass drum rims. Some Aquarian and Evans EMad heads fit. Take the Bass drum rim with you when you go looking for heads. Two of the Snare drum tuning screws broke and I had to drill out and re tap the mount(please don't do this unless you know how to do it). I do like the idea of portability but the rack doesn't work for me. Love the Snare Drum. I use the Traps for practice and for those small room gigs. The Plastic shells and hardware on the set that I have are of good quality. Like any hardware, don't abuse it. Use your imagination and these Drums will serve you well.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

Bought this for my school band because it appeared light and easy to move. That is the case.....but it came with a broken part. That wasn't the end. Every few weeks or so something else (mostly the plastic parts) break off and can not be used. We can only have one cymbal mounted on the rack and the snare attachment broke off. We mounted the snare on a traditional stand, but a month or so later the snare control broke off. Not worth this much money. It's worth only about half the money it sells for.

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

I believe it to be A great Set, but the way its packaged and shipped is poorly done. I ordered the kit twice and on both deliveries the tension clamp on the snare was broken. So after receiving it the second time I didn't return it, I simply repaired it with Gorilla Glue. I do think they need to redesign the tension clamp to a better quality alloy and not plastic, simple because of the stress on the snares.

Been playing gigs for years in clubs, big and small events. These portable drums are great for any venue. The bass drum is good but does need adjustment to get the heavy tone. Over all great sound. Love the crispy snare drum. Excellent bang for the price. Easy set up.

Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set

          By Charles Givans

          from Virginia

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

Very nice set overall. Meets my needs exactly, which is to have a compact set to have for tight location gigs, and an auxiliary set to practice on away from the main part of the house when others are about. Sound quality is mostly great - I especially like the snare. The toms do the job. The bass is lacking some - I'm still working to see if tuning differently will make help much, but I'm concluding there's no substitute for a full sized bass.
Very complete for what I need. A little cramped in the that cymbals end up being a little closer than I'd like, but hey, I got it so I could fit in small spaces, so not such a big deal.
Lots of plastic parts on the drums, but so far not an issue - seems to be very sturdy. I'm impressed with the metal hardware that forms the basis for holding the kit together - extremely sturdy. Went together without issue.
Price was right for the quality of what you get. Would have liked to have more cymbal options available. Will usually take my "main" cymbals from my permanent set to gigs, but want another set to go with these for practicing in the basement where these are set up (away from my regular music/practice room). Will probably end up spending half of what I spent on the Traps to get decent cymbals.

          Great portable kit for jamming

          By mel-HA3mY

          from San Antonio, TX

Comments about Traps Drums A400 Portable Acoustic Drum Set:

This kit is ideal for someone who wants a light, portable kit for jamming; it's very easy to assemble. Just beware that the brackets incorporate a lot of plastic, not meant for harsh treatment. As far as sound, the toms sound just fine with the provided heads. The bass drum sounds alright, but I'm replacing it with a different head with a port hole. The snare sounds very harsh, and I'll probably use it as an accessory rather than as my main snare. I am replacing all the heads to achieve a darker sound. The hi hat stand is acceptable, but does not use pads for the cymbals. Regarding cymbals, it's best to find some on your own, based on your own personal preference.Overall, the rack, toms and bass are perfectly acceptable, and I'm complementing it with a different hi hat stand, snare, drum heads, and bass drum pedal. Again, this is great for jamming because it's light and portable. I'm not sure about large gigs; the plastic in the brackets would make me hesitate to use it for more harsh conditions.
