While these excel at certain types of music, at others however, they stink. Don't get me wrong, I'm a 25+ yr Zildjian loyalist, and I'll play them until I'm worm food. These are great for heavy rock and "Zep" tribute bands, but they are just not very versatile. Specifically, you cannot get a tight, crisp, hi-hat sound when you are keeping steady time - no matter how hard you have the HHat pedal squashed down. The inherent ripple design of the bottom hat allows too much vibration and movement, and thus a sloppy "closed" HHat sound. I ended up swapping the bottom hat for a Quick Beat and I now have the tight, controlled, crisp closed-hat sound when called for, as well as the skull-jarring half-open mayhem when I need it. If I had to do it all over again, I would have just gone with the Quick Beat set for the increased versatility and the heavy weight.

This review is mainly for the 13 inch pair, but I also tried the 15 inch and it wasn't much better.

I bought a 13 inch set of A Custom Mastersound hats to replace a 14 inch Zildjian K. The K must be a better hat because of the price, but they sound like they're in a tube when they're played open. My experience with the A Custom Mastersounds is on the other end. While they sound better than the Ks open, riding them closed sounds like I'm playing on a piece of plastic. Playing with the meat of the stick on the edge of the hat isn't much better either. I found a set of 15's at Guitar Center last night, and they sounded like an even bigger piece of plastic. It's strange because I've been playing on a pair of 14 inch A Custom Mastersounds (they aren't mine tho) in the band I play with, and I found them to be a nice set of hats. I want better for my personal kit tho.

I've seen these hats referred to as "top of the line" in reviews and some forums. The bar must be real low these days because although these hats (and also the cymbals in the A Custom lineup) look good around a drumkit, their sound isn't much better than those cheap Mieni cymbal sets that are included with low end starter drumkits.

Comments about Zildjian A Custom Mastersound Hi-Hat Pair:

I own heavier, darker Sabian hats but when I played with my blues trio I felt like I had to play at a much higher volume to get the full sound I was looking for. The 13" Mastersound Zildjians allow me to play with a broader range of dynamics and still get the clean cut sound. They are loud when I need them to be but full at low volume settings as well. I love these hats!!

nice hi hats, but for me they seemed average... i love the a custom line of cymbals so i guess i was expecting more, these hi hats had almost too much of a click when closed. open sounded amazing, but the closed just wasnt what i was hoping for

They sound like hi-hats should sound?

Comments about Zildjian A Custom Mastersound Hi-Hat Pair:

I love these hi-hats! The ones i had before were ZBT's but the A Custom Mastersounds..... Just blew me away when i heard them for the first time while playing my friends' drum set. These things are going to last a while. If you have the money (Musicians Friend always has a sale) then buy them!
Well, you have the traditional black logo for the A Customs which looks really good on these hi-hats, they came in a brilliant finish which makes them look shiny and expensive (sound is much more important though). The bottom hi-hat has little ridges for air to seap through which i personally think is amazing because you get that type of "chick" sound that you want from a set of hi-hats.
They have an amazing sound, clean chick, pingy bell and excellent washy sound when half open or loose.
For the price, these are nothing less than amazing! I would definitely recommend these to someone else in any size (i prefer 13").

      Amazing for any style!

Comments about Zildjian A Custom Mastersound Hi-Hat Pair:

Overall, I wouldn't want to change hi-hats, these have grown onto me so much and they sound too amazing to change out. Again, you cannot go wrong with A Customs, especially when they're Mastersounds!
These hi-hats are amazing for any style of music! I've got a pair of 15" hats that i've had for a little over half a year and they're still going strong, no cracks, no dents, and the ink is still on there. They have a bright tone and an awesome "chick" when closed tight, and not to mention, they're pretty and shiny! If you're wanting to upgrade to a new pair of hi-hats I strongly recommend these, you cannot go wrong with A Customs, especially when they're Mastersounds!

I recieved these hi-hats from my dad who didn't use them anymore, and used, brand-new, or whatever, these cymbals sound amazing! They've been through a lot, touring, playing, etc. and still manage to sound absolutely spectacular. 10/10

Comments about Zildjian A Custom Mastersound Hi-Hat Pair:

These sound great but they feel like your playing on toy cymbals. Returned and went back to my old faithful 14" A Zildjian Rock hi-hats. The new Rock Hi-Hats are better sounding than my 80's version.
