OVERVIEW

New K Zildjians made with the input of the ultimate groove master!

The Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals were designed with Steve Gadd and feature his distinctive cymbal sound. Steve worked with the Zildjian Sound Lab for several years to reproduce the classic and sought-after sound of his cymbals. The resulting hi-hats feature a 13-15/16" medium-weight top, 14" medium-thin bottom, and have a sharp, defined "chick." Like Gadd himself, the K Custom Session cymbals are versatile enough for any playing and recording situation.

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

The K Custom Session Hi-Hats… Are they as universal as the name implies? YES. Modeled directly after Steve Gadd's personal hi-hats, one of the most unique selling points that this pair of cymbals has to offer is the medium weight, heavily hammered top hat and the medium-thin, nearly machine lathed bottom hat. Why this configuration, you might ask? Because after Steve left the Army Band in the early '70s, he wanted to experiment and find a truly unique sound. He hand-selected two old K Zildjian hi-hats from a music store in New York and wound up using the heavier cymbal as the top hat (which is the opposite of about every other pair of hats on the market). This gave him that sought-after, unique sound that seemed to blend seamlessly with any genre of music (Jazz, Latin, Funk, R&B, Rock, etc.), and with the K Custom Session Hi-Hats, that sound can be yours as well!

The seemingly upside-down weight arrangement of these hats does a couple of unique things:

    1) The heavier top hat increases stick definition greatly when playing the hats tight. It also allows for an exceptionally solid foot chick sound.

    2) The thinner bottom hat provides a fat, dark loose hi-hat sound, and when paired with the heavier top hat, provides what is probably the widest range of sounds that you can get out of a single pair of hats (I'm comparing these only against other hi-hats that I've played: Zildjian's New Beats, Special Recording Hi-Hats, K Hi-Hats, K Light Hi Hats, K Custom Dark Hi-Hats, A Custom Hi-Hats, A Custom Mastersound Hi-Hats, and Armand Hi-Hats). The level of foot control is incredible.

A couple of other nice selling points are the heavily-hammered top hat and the brilliant finish on both cymbals. The heavy hammering on the top hat really darkens up the sound and dries up the wash slightly, giving it that "old cymbal that you found in the music store" sound. The brilliant finish opens up the crash-quality or response of both cymbals, which lends to the extreme sensitivity and versatility of these hats.

Bottom-line: These hats work for anything and everything. You can swing on them, lay down a syncopated 16th note groove accented with some barks, or play a sloshy rock feel. Don't let the name "Session" scare you away from using them live. They project just fine, but don't dominate. A beautifully dark, universal instrument from the pinnacle of cymbal-makers. Try a pair today, and I have no doubt you'll see what I mean!

These are a GREAT sounding pair of hats. lovely wash and very sweet. all round a beautiful sound. HOWEVER, due to the smaller top hat, the protruding bottom hat chews up the shoulder of your stick really quickly. it's a real shame, although it's the design of the hat that gives it's great sound. it's just not economical unless you get your sticks for free like gadd!

Art the Percussion Wizard-Session Hi-Hat Review

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

These are by far the best hats I have ever played. They cut through anything in live play. These things don't even need to be mic'd unless your playing a big place. I played these things outdoors at a private party and they didn't need any help. In fact I gave the bass player to the left of my kit a headache from the loudness of them, LOL.They sound rich, they sizzle when you want them to and they play hard for rock as well.price is rough but you won't need to search any longer.

        These are special!

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

Stunning hi hats. When you play them they make they put a smile on your face. I've used A projections, briefly, didn't like them, too brash. I have and still use K Custom Dark 13"s - lovely, but the Session knocks spots off them. I've just bought my dream DW collector's kit and together they are awesome. With these you just know they'll cover all styles with grace and presence - and with the respect of other musicians. 5 star hats. I gave a 4.5 for value - they are "reassuringly expensive" !!

        K'Sweet

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

Odd set of Hats, in a good way. The top is heavier than the bottom and the bottom is hammered like an A... smooth, hammer marks barely noticeable for a K. The bottom is smaller (1mm) but not enough to notice. Top is hammered overtime, even the bell is struck. What all this adds up to is a quality sounding pair of hats. The foot chick is loud, but K dark/mellow, which is stand-out IMO.Also cool; with the 'heavy' on top, the sound 'seems' to emanate predominantly from the top of the Hats, everything you play is heard clearly.Top cymbal, with its abundant hammering and weight (M) will sizzle nicely when played softly, which is a 'gadd' send for low volume music; these hats sound sweet, they cream-out at low volume and the sound is K Heaven... its called 'playability' and its abundant. For some strange reason (top/heavy(?)) the Gadd K Custom Sessions have more 'cut' than regular K's. You think heavy-top and stiffness come to mind, not with Gadd Session, these hats are very musical. Try and play a set. Very dynamic, rich sounding. Expensive, but something you probably won't ever want to part with.

        Beautiful Hats

        By Anonymous

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

These things are just beautiful. Some earlier review states that these may sound weird to a beginner, but Id have to say I disagree, as these are great general purpose hats, and really sound absolutely how a great pair of hats should sound. I was playing with 14'' A-Custom hats that just were not doing it for me, very high frequency, just felt strange, a bit hollow, didn't meld with the rock music im playing very well, and was so-so when I recorded them. Def not a typical Hat sound imo.. My A-Custom Crash is awesome though. Anyhow, I dropped these K-Custom Session hats on the stand and had a jam, and wow, really, perfect. Its a classy sound.. They're warm, but not overly dark, crisp enough in both sound and feel, chicks well, washes well, again, has a great feel, and also looks good. My search for sublime hhats has ended, im sure for a long while, and all I have to focus on now is is the perfect RHCrash. You will make no mistake picking these puppies up, the price for admission is completely worth it in this case.

Super Hi Hats for Rock and Blues

        By ClassicDrummer

        from Murrysville, PA

Comments about Zildjian K Custom Session Hi-Hat Cymbals:

The Zildjian K Custom Session Hi Hats are by far the best Hi Hats I have ever owned. I used Zildjian New Beats for over 30 years and when I heard these, I couldn't believe the sound. You can close them up for an articulate chk sound and articulate stick work and open them up for a nice wash. they have a full, deep sound without being dull. A must have for Rock and Blues.

These hats are exactly what I needed. With a lighter top and heavier bottom, it's easy to get the dynamics you want.Tone quality, chick, wash, everything - exactly what a drummer looks for in hihats.
