I first saw these in a local shop and just had to get them, this was back in the early '90s and after 20 years with them I still love them to death and have no intention of ever changing them. I have the 13in set and they sound like no other hi-hats: dry, crisp, fast and startlingly sharp. They give great definition to your stick-work: you hear every tap regardless how fast you roll on them, which together with the strong 'chick' sound reward you for high-speed 16ths and faster beats, accents and 'open'-work. Perfect for funk-rock and dance (I tend to play in the style of Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers). The reason is the swish and crash has been tuned-out of them which would otherwise muddy hi-speed work. However this means they are perhaps not so great for slow 'n' loud grungy 4/4 semi-open rock swishing/crashing where you want rich ringing mid-tones, they just sound a bit too sharp and the decay too short for the 'wash' you're trying to create: while 'okay', if I'm playing a few songs in that style for slower rock I switch to more traditional hi-hats.These guys are now in my blood and after all these years I think with their sound, they are very special and define my sound and reward and encourage me to play faster and more clever beats.

I try to go on the reactions of my guitarist, since I know anything sounds very different from his side of the kit as compared (or contrasted) with my side; he says he really likes it; I say I'm unsure since I thought (from my vantage point) that my cheap Sabian B8's were the bomb. When another drummer played with him using Zildjian ZBT's (bottom of their line), and he practically RANTED about how much better they sound over the Sabian B8's, I had to go exotic (and expensive) and try these. He says he really likes them. I think they sound way too dark with the K on top and I'm not Carter-Beauford-like-good enough to put the Z on top. All in all, if HE really likes this sound, then that's what I'll go with, although when money is no object, Ireally would like to hear what other choices are like, such as "New Beats" or other brands' versions. If money is limited, this may very well NOT be your first choice, since this sound is very defined as opposed to versatile and/or conventional. You really should hear these before purchasiing them.

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

I've had a 13" set for about 6 or 7 years. I absolutely love these hats. I play mine with the Z on top and K on the bottom. This gets me more power up front for my thrash metal band. It's powerful with lots of "jangle" that's so desired when playing them open. The K top, Z bottom configuration works well too and sometimes I'll switch it back just to change things up.

        Requires time to break-in

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

Overall, I love these. They are perfect fro any style of music. For me, they have the perfect balance of dry/swish/chick that I desire. i like my hats a little higher in pitch, so I went for the 13s, which is perfect for my set up. They are pretty stiff out of the box, but open up after a while. My friend has had his for about 9 years and they sound better everytime I hear them. I look forward to years of pleasure with mine!
Very defined chick sound, as the description says. Perfect amount of midrange and swishyness
I have only had them for a few weeks, but i have a friend who has had his for YEARS and they only get better with age.
The price is high by my standards, but again they age very well

        My New Favorites

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

First of all, I want to say these Hats are FANTASTIC! I heard about these cymbals on the Zildjian website and that they are endorsed by my current favorite drummer (Tre' Cool) so I ordered the 14 " set to replace my aging 15" New Beats. They sound perfect for the music I play, which is very aggressive. The overall sound was much more harsh than my New Beats, But they cut through the roar of Marshall stacks clear as a bell. the harder you play them, the better they sound. they are a little on the expensive side, but totally worth it. if you have the extra cash, these are the cymbals for you.

        Wow

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

I've been playing drums for about six years now. When I received these in the mail I couldn't believe how wonderful they looked. They take a little to break in and really get the sound it was meant for. I play mainly funk and jazz and these hats fulfill all my needs and then some. You can get a real tight low volume sound when they're closed, which is perfect for small area gigs but when you open these babies up, they really sing. It's the best washed sound I've ever heard, probably due to the Z on the bottom. My only complaint is that they mark too easily, which is weird since I use regular pro mark sticks and am not a heavy hitter at all. Overall, compared to other K hats, the price is perfect and if you're thinking about getting them, just go out and get them already!

        13

        By Justin-Ba4nf

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

I have the 13" model and use them as my main hats. They're very "buttery" feeling and you can really play some articulate and complex patterns and they'll project perfectly! The only problem I have is that they can be a little too dry when playing them tightly closed, but that's just the characteristics of the medium K hi-hat on the top. The Z custom bottom hat really, really helps the projection of these hats! I love the way they sound when playing loosely -- perfect pitch for cutting through loud rock! I generally prefer 13" hats since I do a lot "crashes" and "splashes" with my left foot and the lighter weight of the 13s help -- plus I find they cut through a lot better than 14" or 15" hats. Really, really special cymbals!

        Great Hats

        By Andy Polay

        from New York

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

I have the 13's and gig with them regularly playing traditional and modern jazz. Less regularly, I use them live for rock, funk, and blues. They have a that unique, and great combination of smokey jazz and higher pitch "chick" as advertised. Less volume than 14", but slightly higher pitch - you pick. Either way, they're great. I'm gonna' use these forever, and now will shop for the 14's just to have a little more cutting volume. Very versitile, great Zil. quality. Would highly recommend.

Comments about Zildjian K Special K/Z Hi-Hat Cymbals:

Me and my dad are both drummers and he had had these for years and I always wanted a pair, I finally got a pair for christmas. For most drumset elements, there's always the next step up, or something better-not when you buy these, they are absolutely beautiful hi hats with a gorgeous quality and a nice clean chick sound. Combined with a decent hi hat stand, there's nothing better.
