I am a dobro player that wanted to experiment with a steel guitar. I wanted a quality instrument that I could have pride of ownership. This is a wonderful instrument. It is simple but it is also quality. The sound is full and very pleasing. The wood is very attractive and the metal parts appear to be well plated and substantial. Buy the tolex case, it is like the old Fender cases, well made and provides protection for a very nice guitar that I know you will enjoy. This is more than just a good guitar for the money-this is a good guitar.

So far so good with this lap steel. No complaints. I took it to a little jam session using a small 8 watt tube amp and it sounded fantastic. Single coil noise is certainly there but a humbucker pickup could be installed after market if noise is an issue. The factory pickup has a great tone of it's own once the highs are tamed a bit. This guitar has awesome sustain and very nice fit and finish. The only problem with playing it out live is that everyone else wants to try their hand at it and I can't get the practice I need!! Way fun purchase and I intend to have it for many years. Here's a tip: get the case that goes with this guitar as it probably won't fit in anything you have lying around the house. I tried to get away with a little gig bag from a backpacker guitar but the wide bottom contour of the Weissenborn shape doesn't make it.

Pure Simple Perfection

By Mr. Slide

from Nashville, TN

This USA-made guitar doesn't have a lot of frills and fancy features, but it has everything you need to make the best music possible. The wood is high-quality, light and resonant. The Chandler pickup is toneful, powerful and unique, kind of like a P-90 with more of the clarity of a DeArmond pickup. The build quality, (of course,) is excellent, with great attention to detail.Straight out of the box, this guitar is ready to gig. It's solid and will last and last.It plays easily and the controls are perfectly positioned for swells. The tone reminds me of my 50's Gibson lap steel, and the body shape is very comfortable. This is simply put, a perfect lap steel. You're supporting a small American company, and the price is just fantastic. The only possible complaint could be getting some 60-cycle hum from the single-coil pickup if you play in a lot of bars or use a lot of overdrive and effects. This hasn't been a problem for me, but if it is for you, for a small price you call Chandler and they'll send you a humbucking version of this pickup that installs very easily. The sound is a bit fatter and less clear, but it's very quiet with no hum.Chandler is a great company, and this is a perfect lap steel at a bargain price.

Sweet little guitar

By Housepope Michael

from Akron, OH

This is a starter lap steel for me; I've played straight 6-string for decades, and wanted to try something different. The Chandler RH-2 seems perfect for someone like me. The tone is really strong and warm (I like to play it through a Fender Hot Rod 4x10 on the lower "drive" setting and through a Boss tremolo). It seems pretty versatile, and offers good (U.S.-made) quality for the price. On the cosmetic side, the fingerboard is eye-catching. My only complaint is that the knobs should be switched. As it is, the volume is the one to the left when you are playing and it is hard to reach with your pinky. I just use a volume pedal instead.

Very nice lap steel made in the USA

By amigomusic

from charlevoix MI

I like this steel a lot. It has a very smooth and very sustained sound. I find it a bit on the bright side but it's better to have it bright because you can always roll off the highs. I love how lite it is. I can play it for hours and my legs don't get sore like another steel I used to play. The only thing I don't like about it is that the second string (next to highest) seems to be a little louder than the rest of the strings which can make picking sound a little uneven but i've learned to compensate for it.

nice keeper

By Anonymous

I bought this, as this is my first step up from an Artisan cheapie, and I am very pleased. sounds great with my J Station and lots of reverb and a little vibrato for country stuff, scortches the blues overdriven. I have gigged with it several times now and no troubles. Well worth the purchase.

Steel of a deal!

By Rick B.

from Central New Jersey

Ask me a question

This was my first lap steel, so I knew I didn't want to spend a lot. I looked in a few stores and was pondering the new Fender re-issue (made in China), older Supros, Nationals, etc., or this Chandler. The older laps were beat-up or just plain ugly, and the Fender didn't sound like the originals. So I picked this Chandler, and I'm glad I did. Besides being U.S. made, the components are all decent quality and fit and finish is great. The guitar is nicely laid out for ergonomics and plays easily. The knobs are little too smooth and the pots a bit stiff for pinkie manipulation, but it can be done. Maybe they'll break in.The pick-up is strong and has great dynamics, especially at this price. This lap likes to be strung high and tight! I've found a tuning like C6 really makes it come alive. Any tuning with slightly slack strings gets muddy pretty quickly. It sounds good through either a Fender or Marshall amp style, but better through a Fender (6L6 or 6V6 tubes). Overall, this lap steel is a great buy at this price. It's ready to go as is and will stand up to more expensive or vintage guitars with ease.

The lap steel is quality in all aspects, sound, appearance and I like its design. I ordered straight from Chandler and paid way too much for it, compared to the price here.

decent instrument good tone & sustain

By ccasses

from Franklin, NC

"New Owner" email took 3 weeks to get reply. Volume pot went bad after 2 months. Replacement pots (free) same.Ordered new pots from StewMac.Knob placement OK but should be knurled for grip on "volume pedal" knob tricks.Nice solid slab but Weissenborn shape could mislead into thinking it's a real Hawaiian hollowbody. I'll keep it.
