OVERVIEW

Flashy flamed maple and sound holes for more projection!

With its classic Dobro lines, fully bound, highly figured maple wood body, and classic single cone resonator/spider bridge construction, the Gibson Original Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck is stunning in both appearance and tone. In addition to the bridge's ebony saddle atop a maple base, the full, warm tone of the Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck is enhanced and projected by a new proprietary Dobro cone and amplified via a Fishman resonator pickup. Combining classic construction with state-of-the-art electronics, the Hound Dog Deluxe Roundneck represents Gibson Original's deep respect for both the instrument's history and the needs of today's players. The Hound Dog sounds good acoustically and looks great, but I bought it specifically to amplify and use in live music situations. The Fishman pickup is an old style, under the resonator cone type. I plugged it into a Crate Gunnison acoustic amp and it was difficult to get any volume. The tone was shrill, even with bass on the amp maxed out. I then tried it with a Fishman preamp. That improved the volume level, but I could never dial in a tone that I liked. I could never get an amplified tone that was close to the acoustic, unplugged tone. If the company updated this resonator with a newer under saddle Fishman Nashville pickup, it would probably sound great. The Hound Dog was sent back to the pound.

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

A good looking guitar. Not as loud or as resonant as I expected but the inbuilt passive pickup will be useful for gigging even if I do have to use a pre-amp.
On balance I am very happy with it so far, but I would have to say it is more a pup than a Hound dog.

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

I own this and the red square neck Dobro with the f holes, looks like stained mahogany, back to this round neck,
An amount of these reviews state ,the volume doesn't work well plugged in,
I don't have a problem with mine, its good to go,
So this is more of a statement to many of you,
Yes this Dobro is very nice, any way you look at it,no its not a Gibson,it is an Epiphone made in Chine,
When you purchase this bobro, and you unpack it,let it gain ambient temp, and tune it,dont forget to tune the cone, listen
the cone is where the heart of this instrument is,for a good tone and a loud volume,it aint all about a straight neck,or you likes in strings, this is like any instrument ,it must be set up correctly
So here is my cuff to many of you,
if you didn't set it up to play properlydont give it a bad wrap!

      Hound Dog Acoustic Round Neck.

      By

      from Australia

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

I am very happy with this purchase, great sounding.. The neck feels good for chords. I was surprised at the weight. My Blues buddy who has played professionally since the 70's was "Blown Away Man". It's a real DOBRO.
The pick up is good quality. It's good plugged up and not plugged up. I have a Fender Blues Junior tube amp.
Finish is great satin, Govers !! + Fishman. The neck came up like a gun barrel.
Excellent value for money, even if you dont know to adjust a truss rode (instructions supplied and allen key).

This resonator sounds amazing!!! Came in with the neck a little warped but after a few turns with a wrench, it plays perfectly.

      Sweet item

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

I bought this on musician's friend and it really sounds great! The only real problem that I had was that the pickup is very quiet. The sound man where we played had to max out the board just so it could be heard and that threw off our other equipment. I have started miking it and that works a lot better. Other than that it's great looking and very affordable with a great tone.

      not for me

      By

      from chicago

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

I ordered this guitar last week and was very excited to get it. However, I was very disipointed in the guitar as a whole. There was a lot of info that would have been useful so here you go. 1. this is an acoustic electric. 2. it should fit into a classical guitar case. 3. the cone is spun. 4. it has a fishman pickup. When I got the guitar I thought they shipped the wrong one because it did not look anything like the one I ordered. It has a very dark red, almost burgundy finish. The beutiful wood grain is not visible. The action is strange feeling. The nut feels very narrow for an acoustic and the fret board is very rough feeling making it hard to bend. For how I play this guitar is not right at all.The sound is very warm. It actually sounds good but it lacks that chunky sound that you would expect from a reso. I've been playing on a cheapo rogue that I gave a new saddle for the past year or so. Quite frankly the rogue blows this guitar out of the water as far as sound, feel and action. I am returning this guitar today. Save your self a couple hundred dollars and buy yourself a roque classic spider. Spend a few bucks on upgrades and your good to go.

      Great Spider Resonator w/pickup

      By

      from SF Bay Area

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Deluxe Round Neck Acoustic-Electric with Pickup:

I'm very pleased with the new Dobro Hounddog Deluxe Round Neck Electric/Acoustic Resonator. The latestest Hounddogs are now made in China, but I found the quality and workmanship to be of high quality. My instrument has the great classic Dobro tone and playability.Sure, it would nice to have a Dobro from the Custom Shop in Nashville, but this istrument is a great value with the tone and playability you expect. The only caveat is that the pickup could use some more output. Maybe a small onboard preamp would have helped.
