Classic Dobro, Close to Perfection

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

I spent a few months researching resonator guitars, and ultimately settled on the Dobro Hound Dog. I really like the simple, vintage look, as I really feel that it's the type of look that goes along with classic blues and slide guitar. Overall, I'm very happy with the look and feel of the instrument, and the sound is unique enough to be a welcome addition to my set of instruments.

A few of the negatives: When I first received the guitar from MF, there were several rough spots in the finish, and what appeared to be some specks of glue that had hardened on the finish, and I was not able to remove them. I returned the guitar to MF for an exchange, and the experience was straightforward and hassle-free. Upon receieving the replacement guitar, I noticed a few of the same "rough patches" in the finish, although it had none of the same "glue specks". It's not really an issue; like I said, it is a vintage looking and feeling guitar, just don't go into it thinking that you'll be getting a 100% smooth, laminated-type finish. Again, not a big deal, I'm just overly particular, and I didn't know that was a fairly standard finish for this guitar.

Like some others have stated on here, the stock strings are garbage. Just bank on throwing in some coated resonator strings in with your order. I was going to upgrade eventually; new guitars typically come with junky strings, so I wasn't too upset about it.

Overall, it is a solid instrument with a great look and great sound. If it came with better strings, and would've been described as having a semi rough, "vintage finish", I would rate it 100%. In my opinion, it's hard to find a nice sounding acoustic in this price range, so this is a nice value, and a great addition to anyone's arsenal who is looking to throw in some slide guitar and unique twang.

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

I was looking for a reasonably priced resonator, and as acoustic resonator is not my primary instrument, I preferred not to spend significantly, as I own 12 guitars. As usual, Musicians Friend came through for me - I received the instrument in just a few days after ordering it. When I received it, I took it out of the shipping box, did a quick tune, and tried it - and loved it! I was well pleased. Its tone is very "resonator" - but also has a strong acoustic round hole tone blended with it. Like all resonators, it is heavier than a regular acoustic, weighing in about the same as a good solid body electric. The strings that come with it are adequate to get a rough idea of how good this guitar is for the money - but I re-strung almost immediately with D'addario coated strings, and this instrument really came to life. The action is set up a bit high, but as I also play slide - its a perfect mix. If you don't play slide, I would suggest you lower the action somewhat. Fit and finish is very good for an instrument in this price range, and the fret edges are nicely dressed. One small point -its a plastic nut, so that will get changed out to bone. Other than that - my 'lil Houn' Doggie and I are getting to be best of friends already, and I will bring it to my gig on Wednesday and mic it up with a Shure SM58.

    Dobro Hounddog

    By Sean Downing

    from Colorado

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

Great instrument. Woody sound mixed with resonant harmonics, extended sustain, loud enough to be heard over that guy on the banjo. I bought the roundneck model in plain maple. The look of this thing is nice, plain, unflashy, old-school. The maple ply is bulletproof, and I expect it to last a loooong time--it even has Grover tuners. The action is a bit high, even though it's made to play slide, but it is possible to press the strings down at the frets if you want to play piedmont style. Tune it to a whole step down from concert pitch anc capo the second fret and it plays as well as any other good acoustic (the capo lowers the action and puts you into regular tuning). Definitely a keeper. I only wish it had come with a case.

    Really Great Starter Dobro...

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

This is a really great Dobro for the money. Nice touches include Grover tuners, and the wood finish is generally excellent. As a spider resonator, it has a very different sound from a biscuit resonator, which tend to be more "tinny" and produce more echo. This Dobro sounds more like a very loud standard acoustic guitar, with just a hint of "twang" in the background. The action is also a bit high compared to other resonators I have played. At some point after the warranty expires, I will probably just go get a professional set up to have a full neck adjustment and install a bone nut, but it does play quite well out of the box. I am having so much fun with this Dobro that I am amazed I went so long without one in my arsenal of guitars. Finally, I need to give a shout out to the excellent customer service at Musician's Friend. Prior to receiving this model, I went through a Rogue resonator and another Dobro, both of which had some serious defects. MF took them back and exchanged them with out a single hassle (other than shipping times back and forth), which is exactly how good customer service should be!

I just bought this resonator a few days ago and it was a great investment. The strings that came on it aren't that great but that goes with any other guitar. I got a pack of the Dunlop resonator strings and put them on last night. The tone of this resonator is amazing and it's definitely worth the money. This is my new favorite guitar. If you're thinking about buying a resonator this is the way to go!

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

I played this guitar at a store while my friend was looking around for a first guitar, and I fell in love. I'd never played a resonator before, but I fell in love as soon as I picked it up.
I'm still getting used to the higher action, with most of my experience being on an electric, but it is a dream to play once you get used to that.
The tone is wonderful, and I imagine it's especially great for playing slide and bluegrass, which I'm currently learning because of it.
This is my third guitar, and an amazing addition to my collection.
It certainly has a style and is used for music not all would like, but for the price, I can't imagine anything I'd want more. Incredible value.

    A Great Value!

    By Radio Flyer

    from St. Louis

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

As a long time player, I'd been looking for a long time for an instrument to add to my ban'd mix for added color. I tried a friend's Dobro, and it got me hooked. I purchased the Dobro Hound Dog 3 months ago, and now can't put it down. It sounds great, and the build quality seems very good too. I could have bought a cheaper resonator guitar, but I felt that sticking with the original "Dobro" brand guitar would get me what I was looking for.

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

It's the sound that matters, and I really love the sound delivered by my new China-made Hound Dog. I'm not a slider, but fingerstyle ragtime sounds great! Full, warm tone - unlike any other resonator I have played. I think this guitar would be a good value at twice the price.

      Best Dobro for the money

      By L.C.Burt

      from Northern Virginia

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

My Dobro Hound Dog round neck F-cut sound hole is an awsome res-guitar! I've looked and played some of the "knock offs" from other companies, this is by far an excellent product for the money. I play several styles of music, like Delta Blues, Bluegrass, Southern Rock. My Dobro does very well in all settings. If you are starting out and want a very versitile insturment this is exactly the one you want. Like others have mentioned when you get it, have some fun. Then change the strings to a good quality string ( M>S> has several), then go have some more fun.....

Comments about Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Guitar:

This is a good little instrument for the price. It is an entry level dobro, so it's not the highest quality, but not bad for what it costs. The one I bought had a horrible buzzing sound coming from the cone when I first tuned it up. I tightened the cone tension screw a bit and it took care of it. I've noticed that after quite a bit of playing the buzzing tended to come back and I'd have to tighten the cone again. I think that an upgrade on the cone is in order for this little dobro. Also, plan on putting some heavy resophonic strings on it...the ones on it don't have much sound. Over all it's good though. Stays in tune well...the action is good for fretting or slide. For an entry level instrument at a good price, it's a good buy.

Its a nice alternative to play in open or standard tuning...

I've had this for a few months now and I play it more than any of my other guitars. I primarily bought this for doing blues slide, but this guitar is great for anything (Open Tunings/Standard Tuning). If you want a good beginner Dobro, buy this guitar. Don't use the strings that comes with it! Using smaller strings can create a buzz on the low E.
