Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
My daughter got this as a gift. The first one had several buttons that stuck, so we returned it for a second concertina. This one had one button that stuck, but we were assured that it just needed to be "played in". My daughter is 7 and really enjoys playing. It is small and light enough that she can play it more easily than a toy accordion. However, the sticking buttons really frustrate her. Today the air release valve button stuck...not sure what we will do.
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
.....The first day playing the concertina I also had a button stick. I took it apart and gave the metal arm a little tweak with needle-nosed pliers and it works perfectly now. But, getting it apart was somewhat of a problem; I had a screwhead stip out. The remedy for that was to use pliers to remove the screw. In the process you have to destroy the finish washer under the screwhead. I went to the hardware store and purchased screws and washers to replace them all, on both ends. So, if I ever have to take it apart again it will be much easier. I,also, found the bellows to be very stiff, making it difficult to pull on them. While I had the concertina apart I stretched the bellows out and kept twisting them which allowed them to relax some. Now it's easier to pull while playing. So, now I can say that I'm satisfied with my squeezbox. Joe
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
I have owned mine for about 3 years now, and its not very durable. Last summer, after driving to a friends house to jam the adhesive that connects the reed blocks to the bellows melted in the 90+ degree heat of the day and the reeds started falling of when I tried to play it. I've since been careful about exposing it to extreme temperatures and have only had problems with one reeds popping off from time to time. This has led so a repeated need for removing the end panel to re-apply the reed, gradually stripping one of the screw heads on the panel. Just before christmas this year the valve arms misaligned on the left hand side, and alas I cannot reset them because of the single stripped screw head. That being said, this is the instrument that has introduced me to the concertina, and I have fallen in love.I love busting it out for parties, and even just to wander the streets late at night blasting melodies to pub-hoppers. Had I known beforehand about its suceptability to the heat I'd have been more careful.
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
I loved this concertina when I first received it, but it quickly went out of tune. I exchanged it, and the second one not only began to quickly go out of tune, but one button soon developed a buzzing reed, rendering that button unuseable. I mistakenly let time pass before playing it and have no warranty, so I'm suck with it, but it's so sad because I still really love it!
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
A very nice concertina. I'd recommend it 100% for beginners, although I'd see no shame in a professional going on stage with it either. The case it came with was nice, and the little sheets it had were also very good for those wishing to teach themselves. The bellows were nice, something rare in concertinas under $1,000. The buttons were good, although I've seen a few better examples (though nowhere near this affordable price). The body of it was the only thing that wasn't very good, as it is just very thick plywood, although that's more of a vanity issue. Still, it's a very nice instrument.
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
Purchased one, returned because unit was not tuned acceptably. The Q.C. does not seem very good. Reed assembly is glued together with some sort of semi-hard waxy substance. Reed assembly was falling apart because glue was sloppily/erroneously applied.
Comments about Hohner D40 Concertina:
As an elementary music teacher I like to collect interesting instruments to show and play for my students. The Hohner concertina surprised me with its big sound when I first got it. Once I got the feel of it, it was easy to play and pick out tunes on. It is pleasant and soothing to play and can be surprisingly expressive. The children are mesmerized by it. The hand straps could tighten more and will have to add a hole.
