About Hohner:
Hohner is a family company founded in 1857 in Trossingen, Germany by Matthias Hohner. Hand-made quality and close attention to detail has set Hohner apart from the beginning. A top leading brand in harmonicas, Hohner harps are distributed worldwide. Hohner harmonicas are played on the street by buskers, in intimate nightclubs, on festival stages, and even in Carnegie Hall. Despite a diverse harmonica line used in music from country to classical genres, the most famous Hohner harmonicas are their simple, 10-hole diatonics used frequently by blues, rock, country, and folk musicians.

The Old Standby, made in China, is about as good as you would expect from Hohner's budget harps. But that's not really good enough for the Old Standby. You see, the Old Standby is a classic harp model that dates back over a century to 1892. Up until recently, it was made in Germany, and was a splendid instrument. Generations of Country artists preferred the Old Standby as thier harp of choice. But since the 1990s, it is a Chinese made beginner's harp. What a terrible way to celebrate the model's centenial. This needs to change! Hohner, if you are listening to your customers, please return the Old Standby to a quality German made instrument again, but sell it at a lower price (like the Big River MS). To make the Old Standby unique, give it phospher bronze reeds, like the Suzuki Bluesmaster and the Bushman Delta Frost. Phospher bronze reeds are gaining popularity with harp players, and a German made Old Standby would be the perfect Hohner model to enter the phospher bronze market. Please listen to us, Hohner!

I love the Old Standby. The classic Hohner model 34b is an icon among harps that rivals the Marine Band. The sad thing is that Hohnor, for over a decade now, has been making Old Standbys in China with a significant decrease in quality. How I wish Hohner would restore the respect and greatness to model 34b by making it in Germany once again at a low price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River harps. It would be to Hohner's benefit to offer more German made models in the lower price range, and the Old Standby is a model that deserves such an upgrade the most. Come on Hohner...please make the Old Standby, model 34b, in Germany again at a price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River models.

The best of the Chinese made Hohners

By Dan the Bluesman

from Michigan

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

While the original German made Old Standby is without a doubt a classic treasure for generations of harp players, the newer Chinese made model is nothing to sneeze at. It is true the earliest products to be manufactured in the 1990s were of a substandard quality, but that has changed in the last few years. The quality of the Old Standby has incresed greatly, to be equal to, if not better than, the higher priced Blues Bender. The Old Standby is simply the best harp you can buy for this price. It has the classic Hohner sound that just cannot be duplicated or beat. The sound is also louder and fuller than the other Chinese made Hohner models (and some of the German made models, too). I put my Old Standbys through the wringer, and they generally have a decent lifespan (they even last longer than a certain German made Hohner model that has a reputation for being short-lived). As long as you get one of the newer instruments, rather than an older backlog instrument from the 1990s, the Old Standby will be your old standby for years to come.

better than the more expensive Blues Bender

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

While none of Hohner's Chinese made harps can be considered real instruments a pro would use, they are certainly not toys, either. Of this Chinese line, the Old Standby is the best, even better than the Chinese made Blues Bender, which is almost double the price. The Old Standby has a louder and fuller tone. The ones I have owned have lasted a decent amount of time, also. It would be great if Hohner were to make the Old Standby in Germany again, and keep it at a lower price (the Old Standby is a well-loved model that traces it's lineage back 100 years), but at least it has the best quality of the Chinese line.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

Well, I had this harp just over a week, played it just like I do my others which is to say I don't blow or draw too hard and the 5 draw reed blew out. Wish I'd had spent a few extra bucks on something better now. 20/20 hind sight and all. Guess it just doesn't pay to buy cheap harps. This was my first and last Old Standby.

pretty good harmonica for beginners

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

I have been playing harmonica for a few months now and am a pretty good beginner. I would recommend if you are a beginner to buy this and a cheap bluesband. they both have a different feel. If you are an expert this makes a great beater harmonica. I now play with special 20's but these were good too.

I bought these last ones to take to Uganda as presents, but the Old Standby is where I started and am still satisfied with the sound. I also play about ten or eleven other harmonicas including the Super Chromonica and the 280C. I have given them before as gifts and found them to be very substantial. A great beginner harp.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

This harp looks like all the other Chinese Hohner harps that are on the market. I think that Hohner assembles a bunch of reed plates and combs then slaps on whatever cover plate they want that model to be, comb and reed plates look just like the Blues Band and Hot Metal harps that I had. With a little work it's a very playable harp, no better and no worse then any other Chinese harp on the market and much better IMHO then the more expensive Suzuki FolkMaster. Hohner's best "Bang for the Buck" in harps is the Big River and if you can afford to get that model then do it but if not this one will work ok once you work on it a bit.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

I bought a few of these a year or two ago when I started to play harp. I quickly learned that you get what you pay for, only less in the case of these Old Standbys. If I didn't gear up with a quiver of Special 20s, I would have given up frustrated with the Old Standbys. As my harp playing gets better, the inadequacies of the Old Standby become even more apparent. They are unplayable compared to good serviceable harps. No joke. If you are serious about leaning to play, pony up and buy decent harmonicas. To avoid passing the frustration along, I destroyed 7 of these with a ball peen hammer. I love my Special 20s and also have a number of Lee Oscars. Buying the Old Standbys only delayed learning. End of rant. Buy good harps one at a time if you have to.

I bought 3 Hohner Old Standby harmonicas to give to my 3 granddaughters (5,4,&3) at our family Thanksgiving dinner. They were a huge hit and the girls were dancing as they played their first harmonicas. I pulled out my grandfather's old Hohner Echo and joined in. Thank you Hohner and Musician's Friend for carrying on a family tradition.
