As with all bargain instruments the buyer should take in to consideration the quality expected for the price paid and intended use. These harmonicas are for amateur, occasional use, if you buy them for other use or expect them to be comporable to Special 20's or other Hohner harps you will likely be dissapointed.

Contrary to some reviews I have read these are not toys. Yes, they are plastic and light duty but they are nice looking, in tune, all of the harps worked well out of the box and have a fair sound. The cons I have noticed so far are they have low volume, are not great for note bending and do not appear to be durable.

I already own a few quality harmonicas in common keys and bought these to add some light harmonica parts and accents to home recordings in "odd" keys, these are perfect in that role.
To me it makes a lot more sense to buy this set than to go out and spend this amount for a harmonica (in a key I don't commonly use) that will only be used for one small part or one recording. Now that I own the Piedmont set when I come across the odd intro or small harmonica part in a key for which I don't own a higher quality instrument I will have the harp needed handy.

Some reviewers say these are not for the beginner but I disagree. While rank beginners may not be able to use these for practicing and note bending (beginners should own a quality "C" harp for daily practice, I have a marine band that is great practice and normal play ) I think they are perfect for someone starting out to learn songs in different keys and to learn how to cross key and use the different harps.

Keep in mind that if you are serious about harmonica you will have to upgrade, these are not a long term instrument for the serious player and are not well suited for heavy use and live performance duty. The case is really nice so as you upgrade you will be able to slide the new harps right in. For the occasional harmonica player the case is nice to keep on a shelf and have a harmonica handy when needed.

Overall for the intended use and money spent I feel this is an excellent bargain.

I am a starting-over harpist, but a full-time gigging musician and teacher. Back in that magical day when the sixties wee becoming the seventies I used a couple of Marine Band and Hohner Blues harps as part of a so-lo (as in how low can you sink...) acoustic thing I used to do. I would hang them around my neck like Dylan and Neil Young, and honk out the hits.

A couple of months ago, I had a wild hair and thought about getting some harp chops together. I play in a blues-rock-country bar band, and I thought (imitates Bruce Willis in the first Die Hard), "Yeah, get a couple of keys, learn a couple of licks, it'll be a blast!" I got this Piedmont 7-harp set and started checking YouTube for instructional vids. I teach guitar and orchestra in a public school and have the summer (mostly) off, so...

Well, first the good stuff: Musician's Friend gave me a great deal! We agree not to discuss actual prices, but I did pay a hair under the everyday low price because of an accessories sale, and I of course got the fast, FREE SHIPPING that keeps me coming back to MF.

Unfortunately, these harps are, in my opinion, money poorly spent. You're supposed to grip the harp between the thumb and extended first finger with the holes facing your mouth. These harps have tops and bottoms made of a rubbery soft plastic that kind of creeps me out to touch. I feel like I'm going to crush this toy in my thumb and one finger, and the things smell and taste like plastic.

The worst part is the reeds. They take a second to respond, making a "fwah" on the beginning of each note. I should mention that I was a tuba major in college and am a private instructor on brass instruments, so please don't tell me I'm not putting enough air into the harp. Also, there's no "cut" to the tone, just this sort of anemic wheeze...

Seriously, if you want to explore any new musical instrument it is vitally important that you get a good playing, fairly responsive piece. No matter what the cost or where it comes from, you can't learn on an instrument that fights with you. For the about the same dough, you would be MUCH better off getting ONE nice harp (Marine Band, Special 20, Blues Harp, the Lee Oskars are quite nice) and then adding keys as your needs progress. Anyway, I do plan on keeping the case that these bad boys came in, it's not too bad...

GREAT set for beginners!

Cons

  • Don't Bend Well
  • Low Volume

Best Uses

Comments about Hohner Piedmont Blues 7-Harmonica Pack with Case:

Ah, the memories of my very first set of harps when I decided to learn to play!
Harmonicas are just like any other musical product; quality costs and ya get what ya pay for.
Good harps are expensive; see how much you'll pay for seven keys of Special 20's or Lee Oskars.
Multiple keys are a great way to learn and really see what you can do with the harp. Your ears get a frame of reference as you try to find YOUR sound.
And...the case is perfect for when you are ready to commit to more expensive instruments.

When I first opened the package and pulled one of the harmonicas out I was a bit disappointed with these plastic harmonicas. I was however amazed at the quality of the tones produced. Do not let the materials fool you. These are high quality instruments musically even if they feel like a kids toy..

Comments about Hohner Piedmont Blues 7-Harmonica Pack with Case:

I cannot believe all the positive reviews. These things are horrible. You have to blow hard just to get a wimpy sound. The rough surface irritates your lips. It tastes and smells like a toxic chemical. All seven units had at least one defective reed. I would not give this to even a beginner; it would be very discouraging for them. Yes they are very cheap, but are useless. Save up for something that sounds good and is easy to play, like a Marine band or special 20. There is a world of difference, and it is not all that much money.
The only positive is that the case is nice.

Can't Be Beat for the Price!

        Best Uses

        • Casual Playing

Comments about Hohner Piedmont Blues 7-Harmonica Pack with Case:

I am not a professional/working/gigging musician, nor is harmonica my main instrument.

If I was a professional/working/gigging harmonica player, I'm sure I'd invest a lot more money in high quality harps -- probably Hohner Special 20s.

For learning, for playing casually around the house or on family music nights, etc., these things just can't be beat.

In terms of perceived production quality, I was pleasantly surprised. The harps match the keys as labeled, they have a reasonably solid feel, etc. Concert quality harps? No. But reasonably well made.

The only down side I've noticed is that, as a novice player just really now learning to bend notes, they don't bend as easily as a couple of slightly higher-quality harps I have.

Price for value here is insanely great. The cost of seven harps (A, B-Flat, C, D, E, F and G) in a case isn't much more than you'd expect to pay for the case alone (I paid less than I'll be paying for one of those "hang it around your neck" units so I can accompany myself on guitar!), and it gets you covered in all standard keys.

What's not to like here? If you're a gigging musician, spend more money and get the best gear, of course. But if you're just starting to learn or your playing is casual rather than professional, I don't see how you can go wrong with the Piedmont Blues set.
