I'm a longtime guitar player, got the itch to try the mandolin. Figured to start as inexpensively as possible, bought this Rogue package. I've had more fun for the price than I ever would have thought possible! And I have learned a lot, too. I've always been afraid to mess with my own guitars, but after a well-known luthier screwed up the setup of a pretty expensive classical guitar of mine I thought I'd use this to build my own setup abilities.

First off, the bad: the nut was way too high to be decently playable; the bridge was so high that at its lowest setting it was still off the scale over the 12th fret; I have read some reviewers complain the strings are bad, but they seemed all right to me during setup, but nothing I'd leave on.

Setup: I took everything but the tuners off, polished and waxed her. Lubed the tuners (you can use pencil lead, which is mostly graphite, or a small dab of vaseline, oiled the fretboard (I have a Dunlop guitar care kit, used the fretboard oil in the kit). Used a Dremel to shave the bridge down close, and then finish-sanded it on the body for a good fit.

I made my own nut saws and took two iterations to get the bridge and nut heights where I wanted them. Currently at 12th fret I'm 1.5 mm over with no buzzing, I may try lower action to see how it plays; intonation is dead-on, measured with an electronic tuner; the floating bridge is wood, easy to set, looks cheap but works very well. I lubed the nut before putting on the strings.
Reassembled and changed the strings to D'Addarios (the same ones Ricky Skaggs uses!) and started playing her tonight.

The good: Action is very nice; no fret buzzing on the entire length of the fretboard; sound is nicer than I expected, kind of woody, not tinny; the finish is better than I expected (not perfect, but darned good); the binding is much better than it has the right to be (for the price). All in all, for a campfire or starter mando this is a crazy bargain. I researched a couple-dozen luthier websites and read a few books to figure out how to set her up right - I've gained the confidence to mess with my harem of guitars now! Best money I've spent in a loooooong time.

Oh, and the books are both useful, and the gig bag is padded and well-constructed. It's such a good value I want to buy another one! When you order it buy a couple of sets of replacement strings and some picks!

This review is more about the package than the instrument. I am an experienced but not professional guitarist. As I get on in years I'm finding that I want to learn to play more stringed instruments yet don't want to make a big investment right off the bat.

The mandolin that comes with this kit fits the beginners' bill nicely. Setting it up would be much easier and quicker with a little experience. If you have none, call a friend who does. Initial setup is critical with this one. The instructions do well but can be confusing to the novice. I had mine set up and the intonation right on within 30 minutes but this wasn't my first rodeo. Once set up it plays great. Very surprised at the resonance and duration. This will be a fun box until I can get my hands on a good one. I live in Japan and there are not many mandolins (nor players) around.

The rest of the kit is a waste of money. It appears that Musicians Friend is trying to unload stuff they can't sell. You can learn more on the YouTube.

I will bet that no kid wakes up one day and wants to learn the mandolin. That comes with age and experience. I, for one, knowing what I know now, wouldn've learned the accordian, piano and drums as well has guitar. I'll leave that to you to figure out why. This means that someone wanting to learn mandolin already has the skills and knowledge necessary to teach themselves.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy this kit. Buy the mandolin by itself and use what's left over for a strap and some new strings.

Considering the low $ deal on this package - it's ok

By John Cotte

Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

One of the E strings was broken upon arrival. MF corrected this by sending me a new set of D'Addario mandolin strings. Made a world of difference in the overall tone. Highly recommend that you replace the strings immediately to better quality strings.

With all the strings off, I took advantage to polish the frets, clean/oil the fretboard and then performed a complete setup (intonation, bridge adjustment (lowered action). It made the action much better and the fretboard feels so much nicer making early playing on this more enjoyable.

Kudoes to MF for handling the replacement strings promptly and without any hassles. You guys rock.
Good entry level mandolin. Package deal was enticing along with the low price.
There are a lot of minor finish blemishes and there are several dings in the body (front/back) in the mandolin. Considering this is a low end starter mandolin with the package deal and that the price was low, it's all ok. I can live with these imperfections until I'm ready to upgrade.
Entire package with chord book and beginner's book, bag and mandolin is cool. It's a starter set after all. Once I upgrade, I'll give this to a local charity that provides music lessons.

      Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

This is a really nice, low cost mandolin. beautiful finish It came with a set up sheet that lead me through the set up and tune. hight at the nut was spot on, took a little trial and error on the bridge.I finally got the the tune good all the way to the 12th fret. I thought I had the action to low after first tune because I kept getting a buzzing sound with every chord but I found this to be the pick guard was push in against the body and the little rubber bumper on the back was not out on the edge like it needed to be. Just a slight adjustment to the pick gaurd and wha-la no more buzz. I read a lot about set up of a mandolin and was really afraid I would never be able to get this thing to sound good but it turned out to be a breeze to get it good enough for my limited playing ability. The tuning gears seem to be a little sloppy and can be a pain when tuning new strings ,going back and forth tweaking the tune until strings get settled down. I don't think you'll ever see this mandolin on the grand ol opera but I think it's a great value to start out on.

I would recommend it and actually have sent someone to Musician's Friend website who was looking for a guitar and possibly the same mandolin that I purchased.

Purchased this to give to my son for Christmas, so at this point I cannot speak to the quality of instrument. All I can say at this point is that it looks like a mandolin that cost much more than I paid. I also purchased a mandolin strap as it was not included in the package.

I have played guitar for a few years now and wanted to pick up the mandolin without spending a bunch of money. This was a great buy for that purpose. It sounds pretty good and is super cheap. I haven't been around enough mandolins to tell you how it compares so I will leave that to others.

When you order this guy, go ahead and order some new strings too. Mine came with both both G strings dead as dead gets.

Oh and as far as the package deal goes vs. just buying the mandolin, I would say it is worth it. The gig bag alone is worth the extra $10. It is a great little gig bag and the books had me playing G, C, D and Em chords in seconds.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase!

As usual, I'm not disappointed by Rogue. I've bought 2 Rogue guitars and this mandolin and they all sound, play and feel great.
Fit and finish looks much more expensive.

            Comments about Rogue Learn-the-Mandolin Package:

Sound and playability are great for such an economical package. I only plan on sanding down the bridge for even lower action and changing the strings. Great deal for the beginner, just add picks and a tuner for a complete package.
Nothing fancy, but it includes a really nice gig bag and a couple of helpful books.
OK, it's not a Gibson, Kentucky or Morgan Monroe, but I can't complain considering the price. I did a very thorough inspection when it arrived and could not find any flaws. After lowering the bridge all the way, the action was very playable. The sound/tone seems quite good. After tuning 3 or 4 times over several days, it stays in tune as well as any of my guitars.
Fantastic deal for such an instrument and gig bag package.

I bought one of these from amazon awhile back, I thought it was pretty, good sound but I never played it because i listen to mainly rock and didnt know any songs to play for it so I sold it. I started listening to folk music lately, started missing it, and wanted one again. So I ordered this one, decided to get the pack. Mainly for the case. I'm solo happy MF was helpful when I called them, this thing is gorgeous. Sounds great! And the case it comes with is very nice!! I play bass, guitar, ukulele and have for a few years, im not a professional but I know what a good instrument looks and sounds like. This is a great instrument. Yes there are obviously going to be better mandolins. But for the price, it is great!

nice quality for the price. Only 2 problems I've seen so far (after 3 weeks of an hour a day practice). The screw hole on one of the tuners is stripped out, and the D strings don't have very good tone. It did require a little setup work, so far I've only lowered the bridge to make it a little easier for my inexperienced fingers to play.
