I just got my RLS-1 in. Basically it is a pretty nice little guitar for a very small price. The workmanship on the headstock cutouts is pretty crude...but doesn't affect the playing of the instrument and could be smoothed out pretty easily if it bothers you. Basically the inside of the cutouts is just not finished out smoothly. The tuners seem a little rough, but they work ok and hold tune. The strings that come on the instrument are basically useless. They appear to be a very light gauge set of guitar strings, and are way too loose for steel playing. I replaced them immediately with a set of C6 strings I put together. Smallest string is .015 as opposed to the one on it which was probably a .009 or .010 or so. To be honest, due to the shorter than normal scale on the guitar, even these are a little loose. I may go up a gauge or two with the first three strings when I re-string it next time. For now, it will do. The scale on this guitar is about 3/4 inch shorter than the more common 22.5 inches of many steel guitars. The string spacing is also a little narrower than what is becoming a pretty much standard spacing of 3/8" between strings. The spacing on this guitar is about the same as an electric guitar. One thing I have noticed is that the relatively low string height and spacing, palm blocking is very easy and effective. It does have a fully adjustable bridge. When I got the guitar, this was a little out of adjustment on one of the strings causing some rattle when noting with the bar, so check this if you get one. The nut on the guitar is plastic, which is ok but a metal nut might add a little more sustain. The little guy actually plays and sounds pretty well once you get used to the scale and spacing. You might want to think about this if you have large hands or fingers...I'm small framed so it really doesn't bother me that much. The shorter scale does make a little more precision required to get the notes just right. It also makes some bar slants a little more touchy. The gig bag and legs are a nice addition to the guitar. Frankly, you couldn't buy the bag and legs for the cost of the whole setup. Mine has a couple of very very small scratches, one on the headstock and another on the chrome plate where the volume and tone controls are located, but frankly it's just not enough to be worth bothering with a return. When you buy a guitar in this price range, you can't really expect perfection. Overall, if you want a really cheap introduction to steel guitar, and like the legs, it's not a bad choice. At it's current price it will probably never lose over half it's value. I recently saw a used artisan (same guitar pretty much) sell for almost as much plus shipping. Why somebody would bid a cheap guitar new up to that, I don't know, but they will.

I couldn't wait for my Lap Steel to arrive only to be let down by the LOUSY ELECTRONICS,Severe loud Hum, Popping and Static sounds when touching any metal parts. Volume and Tone controls are weak and noisy.

Tuners are TRASH! They are loose and won't hold string tension. I've plugged this "DUST COLLECTOR" into and through all my amps using various cables and the same loud hum, popping and static sounds persists.

I am a musician of 42+ years and a Luthier. I know my instruments. If you are willing to take a chance on purchasing this Lap Steel be prepared to either send it back or replace the electronics yourself.

It's a roll of the dice on this product. I have bought many items from Musicians Friend and this is the first time I have been unhappy with any product I've gotten from them.

Comments about Rogue RLS-1 Lap Steel Guitar with Stand and Gig Bag:

First the bad: the threaded leg studs are TERRIBLY finished on this and you can expect to cross-thread them and ruin the socket in the base of the guitar. Be prepared with a thread file and a few minutes to get them right. Other than that, this thing is a lot of fun, something different from just strumming away. You can swap out a couple high strings for heavier to get the tuning right (C7), watch a little UTube, and you're off and irritating the cat. For true hilarity, run it through a box (I like MetalX) with a volume pedal, guaranteed entertainment. For the money, it's hard to beat; decent bag, workable electronics, and useable, but wobbly legs.
Like any instrument in this price range, be prepared to fine tune some, and tighten any fastener you find.

sounds good other than i can not tune number 1 string. The tuning key broke. It sounds good on the other 5. Change the tuning keys and strings and i would give 4 to 4 1/2 stars.

Comments about Rogue RLS-1 Lap Steel Guitar with Stand and Gig Bag:

If you want to find out if you like lap steel guitar and have someone available who knows how to set intonation and select string sizes for which ever tuning you want to use, this is a very economical way to start. I suggest starting with either C 6th. Or A 6th. because of the online information available for free.

There is zero instructions with the guitar.

I currently have 4 lap steel guitars, the cheapest one is this Rogue RLS-1 and my most expensive one cost 20 (twenty times as much).

I have seen several of these guitars and they vary considerably in the way they are set up. String sizes vary greatly. Tone of the pickups varies. Some pickups are noisy. Others are ok, but to me are better suited to a bluesy sound with amp overdriven.

My personal taste which is country and western swing, need a different tone. I replaced the pickup in mine and am happy with the sound.

The scale length was way too short on the one I received. The scale length measured 20.25" I Unstrung the guitar, removed the bridge, filled the screw holes with round toothpicks cut to length form the fat part of the toothpick, coated with Elmer's carpenter glue.

Then I positioned the bridge for 21' scale length, marked, and pilot drilled new holes, affixed the bridge, restrung the guitar, took an electronic tuner, tuned it then fine tuned the intonation where the octave was exactly on the twelfth fret for each string.

Now the notes are where they should be and I have a great sounding guitar with a very small investment and a couple hours of work.

Comments about Rogue RLS-1 Lap Steel Guitar with Stand and Gig Bag:

Know what you're buying and have reasonable expectations so you won't be disappointed when this arrives at your door. I had every intention on modifying this before buying so overall I was pleased with the outcome.

Pros: Easily modifiable with custom loaded DiMarzio pickguard. I also bought black classical tuners which were a direct fit.

Cons: Replace the pickup immediately as it extremely noisy and almost useless for any scenario. The tuners weren't very responsive so I replaced those.

Conclusion: With a little setup at the bridge, a pickup replacement, and tuner replacement, this guy is surprisingly a bang-for-your-buck deal. Remember--you really do get what you pay for in terms of quality. Do these mods and you're ready for anything.

Comments about Rogue RLS-1 Lap Steel Guitar with Stand and Gig Bag:

After reading all of the mixed reviews for this product, I finally decided to treat myself with an early birthday gift. I fear too many judge this instrument off of its cheap price point and non-major-name brand.

Other than having to tune the strings a little out of the box, I pretty much plug/played this baby with 0 effort.

I am a drummer/vocalist foremost, so maybe I lack a perfect ear for guitar tone, but imo it sounds wonderful through my little Line 6 Spider III clean/distorted/etc. I can crank it up pretty darn loud without hearing any damage to sound quality, so the comments on poor pickups/electronics may be an issue with that particular unit received or with the musician's ears/hands/brain...

The one knock I would put towards this instrument is that the legs-body sockets are pretty much a joke. Not a problem if you play a lap steel on your lap/a table.

The legs would make me give this a lower rating except for the fact that I am still playing the stock strings and the included gig bag is of high quality.

Bottom line: 5 star bang for your buck. You could play this thing professionally if you don't hold shame over what others might think about your less than a grand instrument brand name.

Typical Rogue instrument, but very playable. Good for intro into an instrument you aren't familiar with. I have a Rogue mando and it helped me get to being a good mando player. Tuners work, but that seems to be their weakest part. This instrument would be easy to upgrade in the future

Comments about Rogue RLS-1 Lap Steel Guitar with Stand and Gig Bag:

I wanted a 2nd Lap Steel for an alternate tuning. Although this is not near the quality of my 8 string Chandler, it is surprisingly solid. The strings were cheezy so i changed them right away. I haven't used the legs and probably won't because i prefer to set a Lap" steel on my Lap. This was quite a bargain, but just one of many that I have received through the company that really lives up to it's name ..Musician's Friend! My star rating takes into account the price. I was concerned as to where i would place it for easy access because it looked too narrow at the bottom for my single guitar stands and too wide at the top for my triple stand. Surprise, it fits the single by rocking the bottom fork so the the bottom of the guitar rest on one tine and the side of the guitar rest on the other tine, safe and secure.
