OVERVIEW

An affordable nylon string with a hand-selected solid cedar top, narrow neck and B-BAND electronics.

Artist Series classical guitars are beautifully made using a traditional Spanish heel construction. Their thoughtful bracing helps deliver sustain, balance and volume. This Hybrid version AC65HCE is a classical guitar with a narrower nut (48mm) and therefore thinner neck. The fingerboard is also arched with a radius similar to that of steel string guitars. So really, it's a nylon string guitar that sounds like a classical but plays like steel string. It's also fitted with the wonderful SYS550 EQ and pickup.

The Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar is a member of the Alvarez Artist '60 Series. Alvarez was careful to get the construction just right to allow this series to sing, and deliver a player experience that's exceptional for a mid price instrument.

The term "solid top" of course refers to the soundboard of an acoustic guitar being made of solid wood, rather than being laminated. However, just because the top is solid, it doesn't necessarily mean the sound automatically benefits from this feature. The tone of the instrument only improves significantly when the whole guitar is built correctly to really release the energy a solid soundboard can generate. The Artist Series is built to do exactly this.

Each model is designed to get the best out if its components, and for them to work together to produce a tone and player experience, rarely found in affordable instruments.

The sound is warm, open and powerful, and both the treble and bass registers are clearly present and balanced in relation to each other. These guitars feel right and are exciting to play and responsive.

The solid ‘A' grade cedar tops are hand selected from quarter-sawn wood. This ensures consistent quality, and its no secret better guitars are made from better wood. These tops not only look great but they are stiff and strong and finely grained. This allows them to be cut just that tiny bit thinner, which lets them dance a little more and produce a lot more vibration, and ultimately a richer tone.

All of the components are made of natural materials such as mother of pearl and abalone inlays, real bone saddles and nuts and rosewood appointments.

SYS650 dual pickup
The SYS550 designed by B-BAND is a pro-level EQ and pickup that reproduces the sound of the guitar very closely with great clarity. B-BAND use a patented under saddle electret film pick up which eliminates synthetic or processed sounds often heard with piezo or other styles of pickup. The result is a very true, acoustic sound. SYS550 also has an accurate, backlit chromatic digital tuner.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I practice quite a lot (I need to!) and I wanted a guitar that was a little easier on my fingers and also had a wider neck for easier finger picking etc. This guitar is ideal. The wider 48mm neck is just enough extra and the slightly curved fingerboard makes transitioning from a steel acoustic or electric to the Alvarez very natural.

The build & finish quality is also excellent for the price (I bought it just before Xmas with the 15% off deal). If I have one complaint, it's an occasional buzz on the D string. I don't think it's the setup, I think it's a frequency/harmonic problem or maybe the loose wiring inside buzzing against the body? Anyway, played through my amp I don't hear it, but acoustically it's there, on and off.

The elecro side of this instrument is pretty good, lots of tonal adjustment on the guitar for different music genres (roll off the presence & middle if you get finger squeak sliding up the strings) and the tuner is quite nice, although as another reviewer said, you have to pluck the low E pretty hard to get the needle to register... very minor issue really. The battery is easy to get at, but it's difficult to find the 1/4" jack when you try to connect while sitting with the instrument on your knee. I keep hitting the other outlet instead!

To sum it up, you won't be disappointed, it's a great instrument that sounds good and you will impress an audience or yourself with it's tonal qualities and appearance.

I recommend this case: Item #541695000001000 by Silver Creek, it's a good tight fit and well made. Just be careful with the knobs on the B-band unit until the foam conforms, it could (possibly) switch the tuner on and drain the battery.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I got this particular guitar because I like the mellow sound of a classical. The Alverez is called a hybrid. It's neck is a little narrower than a traditional classical guitar which I have hardly played. I really enjoy playing this guitar. There are no buzzing frets and the sound is great. I have had to make no adjustments to the guitar. The action is low all the way up the neck.
The guitar has very nice finish. I don't see any inperfections in it. It is easy to tune. It has a built in tunner which is very handy even though it stays in tune very well.
I still consider myself to be a beginner even thoughs I have played since 1965. I have had several guitars over the years. I am not a performer as such. However even I would sound alright in front of parent groups and and people who don't care if I forget the words at times.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Well, the guitar was new and received in original packaging. There was a small 1-inch crack on the back where something hit it. It is between one of the spars and the neck joint, it didn't affect the tone, and since it's a laminate rear section, I didn't bother returning.
Outside of that, it sounds great. It came without needing any adjustments. One of the pluses is that it comes with a truss rod and they included an allen key for adjustment. I was almost going to get a Cordoba C5-CE because of that feature. It also has strap buttons on the bottom and the neck so you don't need to install any. The neck isn't as flat and wide as a regular classical guitar which I like.
This probably sounds like a silly point but there are only fret markers at the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th frets. I am not an accomplished professional guitarist so I'm kind of lost without fret markets above the 12th fret. For classical music, it's not a biggie, but for jazz, I'm going to have to practice more when playing in the upper area of the fretboard.
The built-in tuner is nice but it doesn't pick up the sound from the high E without plucking that string very hard. I plugged it into a guitar amp and it sounds great. Enough EQ and pickup adjustments to get a sound I was satisfied with.
I like the battery compartment design. The 9-volt battery slides in and out easily. I didn't test the XLR output so I can't write anything about that.
                  Finish all over is nice.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been playing guitar since 1974, and since then I have purchased at least 60 guitars, prices ranging from S200 to S2500, and played countless of others in music stores. I've made it my mission to learn as much about guitars as possible, construction, the type of woods used, etc…
I received my Alvarez AC65HCE a couple of days ago. I wanted a nylon string guitar with a 48mm nut-width. First I ordered Ovation super shallow CC059. It came with a broken "G" string and a crack on the top piece. Unlike the Alvarez it had a flat fingerboard and it was cumbersome and inconvenient to get to the battery, and it didn't sound as good as the Alvarez. Needless to say it had to go back. I exchanged it for this Alvarez, and I'm very glad I did.

There's only one thing I don't like about this Alvarez and that is the gloss finish neck, I prefer satin finish. But, that's an easy fix; I can remove the gloss finish with very fine (400 grid) sandpaper. I like every thing else about this guitar and the big shocker is that this guitar is S150 cheaper than the Ovation.
The black tuning keys are smooth and keep the strings in tune just fine. The battery holder is easy to get to, right next to the ¼" and the XLR jacks. The neck has a slight radius to it which give it the steel string feel, and the 48mm nut-width makes playing a joy. The B-Band electronics has the combination of Piezo and Transducer pickups which you can adjust the amount of which pickup you like to use and I found the amplified sound very pleasing. The built-in tuner has a back lit LCD display and it's accurate when I compared it with another tuner. The top is solid Cedar with very fine (close spacing) straight grains. The mahogany side and back it's beautiful and warm sounding. The craftsmanship is flawless and cosmetically very pretty. Good volume, pretty tone and comfortable to hold. It is by far a better guitar than the Ovation CC059 I sent back and much cheaper. It is definitely worth its regular price.

Very good value for the $$$. The playability is a bit stiff but that could be because of the string type. As you move up the neck it gets more difficult. I'm going to change to a medium tension and see how that sounds. The electronics bring out the sound nicely. The guitar has an excellent finish and the first time I played it out it received several comments on how nice it looks and sounded.

This guitar was not the quality I was expecting, but I am not sending it back. The strings, tuning-heads and bridge will have to be replaced.. Too much internal hardware and wiring for it to project cleanly.. The wires bang against the wood if you turn it over.

But it sounds better than any other classical guitar at this price. Just dont have high hopes for great value. Setup and parts replacement will put it just over the mark for value vs. quality.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I started on classicals in the 60's folk movement, then moved to steel strings. But I always missed the rich mellow sounds of the classicals. I'm primarily a finger-style player, although I use finger picks on my 12-strings, but a flat pick becomes a tiddly wink in my hands, so the nylon strings are more comfortable for me. However, muscle memory is a powerful thing, and switching from a 45 mm neck on my D-28 to the Yamaha 51 mm neck was cumberson. The 48 mm neck on this guitar is a great compromise. Also, the Savarez strings, while difficult to keep in tune, bring out the full sound, from the bass to the trebles. A good choice by Alvarez. The neck plays well all the way up (I found myself actually utilizing the cut-away, something I'd never done). I have not experimented much with the onboard electronics, since my typical audience is just myself. But when I have amped it, I've noticed that, even when adjusted fully to the under-bridge transducer, it still picks up a lot of string/fingering sound, something less noticeable when I amp the D-28. I wouldn't trade my Martins for anything, but there are certain songs in the genre that I play that just sound better with the mellow tones of the nylons strings.

Comments about Alvarez Artist Series AC65HCE Classical Hybrid Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

perfect crossover in the price range. wanted to have something for the beach, car and backyard. wanted a nylon and never was crazy about traditional classical or flamenco the neck on those were always too flat and wide. this baby easily if not beats alhambra's 3 series
very nicely done for the price. solid cedar top not AAA grade but very nice top, built in pickup not a necessary for me but nice having the built in tuner. fine finished tuner knobs add to its class. Comfortable neck easy to barre don't quite think it's 45mm more like 48mm there's been confusion on this aspect across the web, classical but comfortable for a steel string player, this option was a huge deciding factor for me.
not a high end guitar though that isn't what i was looking for exceptionally nice asian import, smooth tipped fret endings, finish is smooth, neck is straight and comfortable, no complaints with the overall product
always thought of owning an alvarez and the artist series was a score
