OVERVIEW

Featuring Epiphone ceramic open-coil humbuckers.

Epiphone presents the new Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, a great way for new players to get started on electric guitar at a price anyone can afford. The SG-Special-1 has the same classic “SG” tone, look, and feel that’s gone virtually unchanged over 50 years and players from all genres around the world recognize the “SG” as a one of the best and most distinctive electric guitars ever made. But seasoned pros will also love the new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 for its powerful Ceramic Open Coil humbuckers and smooth easy-to-play Mahogany SlimTaperTM neck.  Plus, the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-1 comes in three beautiful classic color finishes, Cherry, Ebony, and Pelham Blue.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 joins the fan-favorite Special-1 Series designed to bring superior sound and historic Epiphone-style to players just starting out as well as to veterans who want a “workhorse” guitar to take on the road that’s lightweight but makes no compromise in electronics and hardware.

The “SG” profile is one of the most recognized in rock & roll.  First introduced in the early 1960s, “SG” guitars have been the driving force behind Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, jam bands, and British rock.  And now with the Ltd. Ed. SG-Special-I, Epiphone fans around the world can enjoy owning and playing a real Epiphone “SG” at a great price.

The Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 has a Mahogany body cut to the historic SG profile and a bolt-on Mahogany neck featuring the same SlimTaperTM profile enjoyed by owners of iconic Epiphones like the Les Paul Standard and the Casino.  The Mahogany neck has a Rosewood fingerboard with 22 easy-to-press medium jumbo frets with pearloid dot inlays, just like vintage SGs.  Even though new players might favor the Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1, this SG boasts many of the same specifications found on all SGs including 1.68” nut and a 24.75” scale length.

The new Ltd. Ed. SG Special-1 is powered by an Epiphone Ceramic 700TTM Open Coil humbucker in the bridge or lead position and an Epiphone Ceramic 650RTM Open Coil humbucker in the neck or rhythm position.  Ceramic pickups have been a favorite of Hard Rock and Metal players for decades. Ceramic magnets became more readily available in the late 60s and early 70s just as guitar players were incorporating overdrive and distortion into their sound. Ceramic pickups have a sharp, articulate, and saturated tone that’s a perfect compliment to the SG Special-1’s Mahogany body. Pickup selection is made via a standard 3-way pickup selector and controls include Master Volume and Master Tone, both with classic Black “Speed” Knobs.

The Ltd. Ed. SG-Special I has Epiphone’s world renown rock-solid hardware including a heavy duty 1/4” jack, easy-turning machine heads with a pro 15:1 tuning ratio, and a classic wrap-around bridge and tailpiece compensated for reliable intonation.

I have been without an SG for too many years! I started playing Strats and Teles, and moved away from my SG's. So I thought I'd take a chance on this Epi. I'd forgotten what a rock and roll machine an SG is... this thing is a blast to play! The neck is straight and the frets are level with smooth ends, and the strings are properly lined up on the fretboard. Everything works, and there are no finish blemishes or flaws in workmanship. I don't care for the slick finish on the back of the neck, but some folks like them that way. The tuners are economy jobs, but they function and can be replaced if desired. The truss rod turns freely, although it was backed out as far as the access hole would permit. After a setup, all was well, except for a slightly flat intonation on the "A" string, and the bridge/saddle cannot move any closer. This thing sounds great through a tube amp, rock and roll heaven! And oh yes, first order of business, change the strings.

This is a nice beginner electric guitar on a budget. The neck is slim and narrow which makes it easy to play. The string action is very low which caused some fret buzz. Easily adjusted out with a simple truss rod adjustment. The machine head tuner are cheap which caused the strings it to go out of tune quickly. I installed a set of Grover machine heads and problem solved. The red finish is flawless with shiny chrome hardware. GREAT PRICE, BUY IT!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

Fit and finish was very good except for some rust on the cheap strings. After some polishing of the strings it was ready to play. Good intonation. That is very good as there is no adjustment on it. string height was on target. Playability and sound was good. Tuners are very sloppy and hard to keep in tune.Overall it is a good little guitar for the price and with a new set of strings and new tuners it will serve you well.

Great Deal!

By JS

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I just got the guitar in the mail yesterday, so these are just my initial impressions. I will update this review after I get a little more experience playing with the guitar.

All I can say is that I cannot believe how great this guitar feels. Sure, the material, pickups, bolt-on neck, and a few other cosmetic things are not the best quality compared to some higher-end guitars, but this thing feels pretty dang close to a higher-end epiphone/similar type of guitar. It's crazy light, the neck is very fast and smooth to play. The guitar came set up perfectly that I didn't have to make any adjustments to the action or anything. The pelham blue finish looks great too. I also got myself a nice little Orange Crush 35RT, and I could not be happier with this setup. Both the guitar and amp are just super simple and straightforward plug in and play. I like everything from Chet Atkins, Black Sabbath, CCR, Black Keys, Ty Segall, Electric Wizard, Slayer, T. Rex, Weezer, RHCP, Beatles, White Stripes, Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Ry Cooder, etc. And I can get all of these tones for these bands relatively easy whether that be some nice country twang to some bluesy grit all the way to all out stoner/doom/garage rock fuzz.

This guitar is a keeper for sure, and I plan to modify it a little more to my liking by upgrading the tuners. If you're a new guitar player or someone with a little more experience, who needs a first guitar or a backup guitar, I would highly recommend this thing, especially for this price, which is a steal. The "cheap" guitars do not feel cheap any more, and this guitar is proof of a high quality product at a low-level/affordable price. I am super happy with this purchase, and I felt like I just got my first guitar when I was just 10 or 12 years old when I plugged it in. This thing is super fun to play, I didn't pay too much for it, so I'm not too worried about it getting a little banged up. Get one if you can!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I just got this. I really like it, and I have a bunch of other guitars, but this really draws me in.

I'd emphasize that this is very good without much adjustment. Sure, you can replace and modify parts, and I probably will. I just want you to know you can like it fine as it is.

I have the Pelham Blue one, which really is outstanding on the SG contours.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

This guitar is a steal! Immediately I was blown away by the great tone that came out of this low budget beauty. The pelham blue paintjob is stunning and the body is light as a feather. The action required a little bit of adjustment on the bridge but after a few turns on the tune o' matic posts, it was right where I wanted it. They are not kidding around when they say this is a great guitar for beginners and long time players alike. I have been playing for 20 years and while I'm yet to shell out 800 on an axe, I like to think I know a good guitar when I play one and this thing rocks. You might want to change the strings immediately though as the ones it shipped with did not do it any favors and it played and sounded amazing after slapping on a fresh set of 10s.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar two months ago and I absolutely love it. I can get nice low action on it without fret buzzing. I like the simple wraparound bridge, not a lot to fiddle around with. It stays in tune well, I had to change the cheap plastic but though. The pickups are decent, sound better with distortion than clean. I find the Pelham blue finish to be gorgeous. Would buy another one if lost.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

When the 1961 Gibson SG was introduced, I definitely wanted one but couldn't afford it. If you can find a good original now, it will cost you dearly (far more than the new price in 1961.) This special edition from Epiphone comes seriously close in design to the 1961 version at a seriously low price. Don't be mislead by the comments on guitars made in China. This is a well-built, quality instrument. Just watch the Epiphone factory tour on YouTube and you'll be amazed at the craftsmanship. No it's not a Gibson, but it's a great guitar at a great price.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I bought this using an MF discount code. This is a sleeper instrument. Construction is very good - the neck is straight, frets are nicely rounded, and the high gloss red finish looks great. Pickups, tuners, and electronics are not Gibson quality and should not be expected to be such on a guitar in this price range, but they are quite adequate for my intended use with a Line 6 Sonic Port and emulation software. It sounds "OK" through an amp, pedals, and processors, but does fall short of a Gibson here. The bolt on neck is fine - these are actually more forgiving than a set neck could be in instruments in this price range. After I performed a set up, the bass and treble string spacings at the 12th fret are both 2/32" with no fret-outs or string buzz. No truss rod adjustment was required. There is adequate adjustment to the "Melody Maker" bridge to allow for good action height adjustment and intonation. There is no capability for individual string intonation, but the saddle castings are compensated and there are treble and bass adjustments for the bridge against the posts. Using a very sensitive tuner, 5 of the 6 strings are intonated perfectly, with only the G being off by about 2 cents. Given a competent set-up, this is an excellent value.

I had to go through three of these to finally get one that was good. First one had pits in the head-stock real bad. Second one had bad volume pot. Thanks Musician's Friend for checking this one before sending it. It's very light-weight and love the tone. The blue has a beautiful finish. It was definitely worth the wait. Epiphone has got to work on there quality control.

I have never bought a guitar that was not American made until I found this one I thought for the price if I only hung it on the wall it would be worth it when it came I took it out of the box and I got all my tools to set action and intonation I started measuring string height neck relief and found it was right where I was going to put it anyway the strings were 5/64 off the neck exactly what I want them the neck relief was 0.10 which is perfect I was pretty amazed at the set up there was nothing I could do with my tools except put them away and I had been reading that no one is happy with the tuners these are old school tuners they were standard at the time I was growing up there is nothing wrong with the tuners except for people do not know how to adjust them there is a Phillips head screw at the end of the butterfly wing all's you need to do is tighten it and it will work perfectly I have a Paul Reed Smith custom anniversary edition 10 top I have a 1960 gold top Les Paul and many American strats 40th anniversary 50th anniversary and many in between time now only play this Epiphone at live performances and I'm very happy with it and look at the money I have saved

Bought the blue, i recommend it, rather than the red or black. The color is beautiful. Great for beginners but also for people who have been playing for years. Iv been playing for 10+ years and i think you cant go wrong with this guitar. Epiphone all the way. Love it and very glad i bought it. To top it off i got it in the mail in TWO days. Anyone who cant decide if they should buy it, DO IT, you wont be disappointed.

Got at MF when price was in low hundred
Finish is excellent. Beautiful piece. Pelham blue.
Even to a newbie, tuners are obviously fussy and weak.
Bridge seems quite satisfactory at adjusting intonation.
Guitar is sturdy, light, and mobile.
Clean tones do not sound all that vibrant / resonant.
Overdriven tones sound excellent through a Vox modeling amp.
Bottom line… solid purchase, great value. Almost 5 stars, for the money, ya figure.

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

The guitar came very well packaged (box within a oversized box), wrapped up with foam, and included manuals.

This guitar checked many of the boxes of what I was looking for in a guitar. Lightweight, no typical Epi/ Gib. neck dive, humbuckers, minimal controls, simplistic design, & affordability. The guitar feels & looks great. The controls are solid & smooth, the tuners could be more desirable though. Although the set up is pretty good, I will make a couple small adjustments to my liking. Through my 15 watt tube amp it has the raw tone I was looking for while overdriven for r&r. Cleaned up it was quite chimey, not chimey like my Jazzmasters, but still quite pleasant.

This is my first Epiphone & the least I've paid for a guitar in my 16 years playing. We are in the golden age of budget guitars IMO. One can get so much guitar for the money these days. Great guitar & no dissapointments. Can't beat the price & the pelham blue looks sharp!

Comments about Epiphone Limited Edition SG Special-I Electric Guitar:

I figured I would snap one of these up while they were going for next to nothing. I was skeptical, but I figured for that price, I could add an SG. I bought the cherry version, the finish looks nice, though a bit more translucent than the pictures would lead you to believe. The tuners aren't the greatest as mentioned by other reviewers. I felt the biggest thing that needs doing is to buff the Frets, they are a bit rough feeling particularly when bending a note. The fretboard requires a little TLC for sure, but it is level and the edges don't poke out like on some guitars that I have seen. The pickups are run of the mill humbuckers from a bin and don't do anything special, but they do the job. In my experience the neck pickup sounds a lot better than the bridge. They use pretty quality looking electronics inside the cavity, regular sized Alpha 500k pots and a pretty cleanly soldered harness. All In all I'm quite impressed for 120 bones, you'd think you'd have to do more in the way of setup, but out of the box it was ready to go for a beginner/intermediate player. To bring you this guitar at this price point, Epiphone did a pretty good job on everything but the fretboard in my opinion. Musicians Friend was really good about shipping securely it came in a box inside a box with packing and an insert for headstock support. All in all I give it 4 out of 5, there is not an SG out there in this price range that compete in my experience.

Really sweet little guitar for the money. Just got mine in today, 8/16 and have barely put it down. I'm a new guitarist and I've just been playing around learning chords and practicing switching chords. I picked up a used Peavey Stereo Chorus 212 amp and the Ltd SG Special-I has great tone through such an older, affordable amp. Everything on the guitar looks and feels more like a significantly more expensive guitar, to me. There were no factory flats whatsoever out of the box structurally or aesthetically. The whole experience just leaves me pretty pumped that something this nice can be had for about 7% of a "Gibson" name-brand equivalent. I plan to learn guitar and have a small collection eventually of slightly higher end guitars, but I'll keep this one forever because it was my first.

What is great about this product- nice frets, great build- as in nice perfect shaping and beveling, nice paint job (pelham blue), sturdy input jack and intonation, pickups are nice and airy but powerful - i liked them much more than i thought i would- doubt i will even swap them out.. horrible tuners, but this is remedied a bit by just overwrapping the strings once over the post before completing the restring; u can get videos on this on u tube- 3 to a side stringing? I truly love the bridge pickup but the neck pickup is a bit brittle and harsh- try lowering it a little and u might like it better the fretboard is plastic looking, but i find no problems with tone
