OVERVIEW

A great beginner's guitar.

For such an easy-to-afford guitar, the Epiphone PR-150 is a standout -- a perfect instrument to get started on. It is a dreadnought and features a spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard. The PR-150 sounds great and this Epiphone's sunburst finish gives it the look of a far more expensive guitar.

Received this guitar today, and was really looking forward to giving it as a gift. After the initial inspection, it was seen to have a crack in the neck pocket area where the neck was beginning to separate from the body. The fret edges were like razors and were not the result of a shrunken neck, but were simply poorly beveled/filed. I was not expecting to receive a 2000.00 Martin however; based on the stellar reviews, I was expecting a guitar without defects that played within the realm of an entry level guitar. The pain/cuts that would result from playing this neck alone would make a younger person quit. Honestly, how hard is it for Epiphone to take 2 long pieces of masking tape place them on the sides of the neck, and sand the edges of the frets? The guitar says "setup in the USA". Obviously, setup in the USA means a truss rod adjustment only without a quality inspection. As of now it is on the way back to MF and I am waiting for them to receive it so they can send out another one. Hoping the 2nd time around I get a guitar from an inspector who actually released a passable instrument. All things said, the guitar does show promise as the action is fantastic, and the stock strings make it sound very pleasing to my ears. If it were not for the neck, I would have taken care of the frets myself however; a separated neck will only get worse with time so in my case its rinse repeat. If not for the neck, this would have been a 3.5 to 4 star purchase.

9 years and still running strong!

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

my first acoustic was a PR-100 (the predecessor for the PR-150) dressed in all black. beautiful look. 9 years later and a handful of other guitars now under my belt, i STILL pull out my epiphone when i need something to sit around and play. ive made no adjustments or repairs to it and the sound is still as full and hearty as the day i walked home with it (granted the fretboard has some wear and tear on it but a good guitar needs to be played). i never thought after all these years to write a review but after sitting on the couch for 3hrs and playing guitar while mindlessly watching tv it hit me...this is one of the best purchases i have ever made. i hope these reviews can help beginners made a good decision.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

This was my second purchase from Musician's Friend and I continue to be impressed with the quality, price and condition of their products. My Epiphone PR-150 (Vintage Sunburst) sounds as great as it looks...and it looks AWESOME! Holds tune after lengthy jammin', excellent craftsmanship and the finishing detail is what you would expect from a much more expensive guitar. I hesitated to get the Sunburst finish, now it is one of the things I like best about it. It's so easy to play and sounds so good it actually inspires me to practice! Great right out of the box. My brother suggested some high quality strings, but I can't imagine it sounding better. Quite a score for [$]

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

Purchased this guitar from MF on a recommendation from phone rep. Guitar arrived and when I brought it in for a setup, the tech told me the frets from 9 on down were too high and strings buzzed down there. I was told that it wasn't stored properly and the fretboard was dried and the frets were popping up. MF was very good about doing an advance exchange, sending a n/c return label as well, and sent out a replacement same day with next day delivery at no extra charge. The replacement did indeed arrive the next day. However, this one was even worse than the first one. The fretboard was so dry that it was turning white. The frets were again too high in the same places and there was a lot of string buzz. The strings had dust and corrosion spots on them even though this appeared to be a brand new item. Again, bad storage. The MF rep and I decided that it was time to give up on the Epiphone and go with a Fender DG-60 instead. Again MF was very good about issuing a return label but sent the Fender by regular 3 day shipping. And I had to hassle returning two defective guitars. But UPS made that relatively easy.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I picked up the PR-150 about eight months ago, on sale, for a very good price, with the intention of having an inexpensive acoustic guitar I could lug to open mics and such, free from the fear that I would care much if it got stolen or broken. I trusted the Epiphone name for such a purchase, as the brand does have a history behind it to uphold (one would hope).

So I received my PR-150 without a lot of expectations. I'd arbitrarily opted for the sunburst model. It's quite handsome. I started playing the guitar straight out of the box and I have not put it down since. I love this guitar! I love it! I've had dozens of acoustic guitars in my life, many fairly expensive, big name guitars. I would not trade this one for any of them. The tone is clean and rich, with a full, throaty bottom end and melodic, percussive upper tone. Very Beatles-esque. It sounds every bit the same as the Gibson J-160 acoustic guitars used on the early Beatles' records (Yellow Submarine).

These guitars are mass-produced, so it's not what I would call top of the line craftsmanship here. But it's certainly superior than what I expected for the price. My only misgiving: I wish the guitar had better tuners. The ones included are adequate, and the guitar stays in tune fine. But they are not the quality a guitar that sounds this good should have. It's quite difficult to replace Epiphone tuners as they are a unique size.

The intonation is sweet. The set-up perfect. The frets have slightly sharp ends--but nothing to get hung about. It sounds good with a cheap acoustic pick-up in it and it's just a ball to play. I would not trade this guitar for any other. I guard this guitar with my life.

Maybe I was lucky and got that one in a million guitar. But I kind of doubt it. I think in the PR-150 you can expect a real reliable guitar with a good sound for a good price. I'm thinking seriously about getting another one--that I can take to open mics and such.

I've had this guitar for about 6 months now. This guitar is very well put together, you get great crisp sound out of it. the intonation is spot on. The only problem I have had is one the first fret on the D string has developed a little buzz to it (probably because i have old, bad strings on it) and the action is a little low and makes the lower strings a little fuzzy. I would definitley reccomend this to someone on the begginer to intermediate levels.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I've been playing guitar unprofessionaly for over 40 years. And have owned several Epiphones. One of my 1st guitars was an FT-120 I purchased new in 1975. I have since acquired better/more expensive guitars (Martins). I purchased my PR-150VS on impluse from a local classified ad because it was cheap. With the idea of possibly usuing it as a camping guitar. After some clean u and addition of new strings (Martin Lifespan light), I was amased at how much I like it. Not as loud or rich tone as my Martins, but sounds pretty good to my ears. And the best part IMO is that plays very well. I very much look forward to playing it on our camping trips. And play it often at home as well. I would recommend the Epiphone DR-150 for any beginner or someone who wants an inexpensive 2nd guitar.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar has surprisingly good sound and is well-constructed and finished, especially considering its modest cost. I was very pleasantly surprised. I expected and was prepared to accept less.

I usually play 12-string and gravitate toward folk music. I bought this guitar as a replacement for my sole six-string. The guitar it's replacing was made by one of the top names in the business, but I've never been especially happy with its sound. This inexpensive PR-150 has much better sound than the supposedly more upscale guitar that it's replacing.

Cosmetically, there is a small scuff on the edge on the back of the body. It will be easily fixed and is not very noticeable, but I'm surprised that the factory missed it. It's no biggie.

Setup-wise, it arrived nearly perfect. The intonation and action are almost perfect along the whole length of the neck, and it tuned beautifully and stayed tuned. Overall, I'm impressed. However, the third fret is very slightly high and causes some buzzing when the first, second, or fifth strings are played hard while fingered at the second fret. That will be a quick adjustment, so it's no big deal.

The sound is rich and pretty well-balanced with the factory strings. There's a bit more treble than bass, but not very much. The volume is also pretty good. I'd give it 8 out of 10, volume-wise. It's not the loudest guitar I've played, but it's certainly not weak. I might experiment with heavier strings on the bottom. Or maybe steel-and-silk strings. I think this guitar would sing with steel-and-silk.

All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. It's a better guitar than I thought it would be, and an excellent value for the money. I think it would be an especially good choice for a new guitarist because it's inexpensive, but it has sound and quality that they won't soon outgrow. I personally would have no hesitation playing it onstage at a local show or folk festival.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

Great little guitar. Plays, looks and almost sounds like my old Gibson J45. Only downside is that the tuners are kind of cheesy and tough to turn. Don't was your money on anything cheaper. Has a rich sound, plays easy. Shipped in tune but might have to adjust the neck (slight buz). I wouldn't recommend buying a more expensive guitar online without playing first. My son loves the guitar and you can't beat it for a new player. If he decides not to play, I didn't spend a fortune. Epiphone is an awesome company.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

The only thing I can say negative about this guitar is that there was a crusty coating on the frets. Some of it wore away from use and the rest I took off with a dull piece of scotchbright when I changed the strings. This is a nice bit of workmanship and a great value.

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

I wanted an inexpensive guitar to just play around on the porch with. Read reviews about fret problems on this guitar, but assumed they did not know how to adjust. The guitar arrived with dust on the fret board and very dry. Possibly a storage problem, but the same problem others had. Could not get the fret buzz out and the third fret was just too high (try to play an F# on the 1st string and get a G note). Either this is a recurring problem with this guitar, or I got the guitar that others returned to MF. I have been a very good customer of MF (bought 3 quality guitars and a ukulele in the last year and a half before this one) and this was the first problem, but I was not happy getting a guitar with the same problems others have had. I was disappointed with MF for the first time in a long relationship. Don't buy this guitar!

Comments about Epiphone PR-150 Acoustic Guitar:

My son gave me the same model years ago and it's a great acoustic guitar.
When I needed another one to keep at my daughter's house so I didn't have to ship it back and forth it seemed like a no-brainer. But this guitar is noticeably of lower quality.
It seems like everything about it: wood, finish, sound, strings, are all cheaper.
Some of the tuning machines are mushy and don't hold.

If i could have gotten the same quality acoustic that the model was years ago at a reasonably higher cost I would have brought it.

I really enjoyed this guitar for the first 6 months. While the action is a little high, the sound is good. However, after about 6 months, the action continued to get higher. It's been adjusted as much as it can be, but it's just too difficult and no fun to play any longer. Not good for a beginner working on bar chords.

It was a gift for a niece, she loves it. It a perfect beginner guitar for her. Thx to all sales reps. Justin, Matt, Pat, Joshua, JR and Leon, all witch were very helpful. The only small issue is the A string has some buz, but with little adjustment, that won't be an problem. I'm very happy with this instrument.
