Its rare that I write reviews on instruments because, like many of you, I trade 'em out too fast to ever really appreciate them. But this 336 will stay with me FOREVER - guaranteed! While I agree with some of the other reviewers regarding the plastic nut (c'mon, put bone in there Gibson!), everything else about this guitar is absolutely stunning. I owned a 335 and sold it shortly after this guitar arrived at my door. The 336 has its own sound - sort of a mix between a Les Paul and a 335. Woody, but capable of flat out rippin' it up when necessary or mellowing out if need be. I can't believe I haven't seen more of these in player's hands, but maybe the price is holding people back a bit. Got mine as a scratch 'n dent, so it was a reasonable price for a guitar with perfect action, intonation, beauty and grace. If you've been looking for a 335 style guitar without the size, look no further. Gibson got it right with this one as far as I'm concerned. My search is over!

After owning many quality guitars, this is the best It fits my fairly short hands. Great tone and a light, user friendly shape that is a joy to play. Poor fitting toggle switch and unimpressive tuners for the price. Had to sell a PRS and tele deluxe to pay for it(even though it was a scratch and dent) with no regrets. The carved top gives it unique woody sweet tonal quality. It rings out louder acoustically louder than larger 335 type guitars, has a great playing LP type neck, and a balanced tone.
Best semi-hollw guitar I have encountered.
Best Gibson I have played other than a 60's L5.
Beautiful carved figured Maple top. Hardware so so, nice pups.
High priced for me! I think most Gibson are over priced, but that has not stopped me from owning a few thanks to MF used and S&D sales.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

When I first heard about this model I didn't "get it". The coverage at the time didn't make it clear what this guitar was all about. The ES-339 got my attention, but I found that the ES-339 and CS-336 are very similar but the ES-339 is made using laminates and the CS-336 is carved from solid wood (hence the price difference). My local store had a CS-336 in stock so I thought I would try it out. I couldn't put it down! I HAD TO BUY IT! This guitar has SO much soul and character. It has the "play-ability" of a Les Paul, but weighs less and with the semi-hollow body starts to really breathe when played a bit louder. This guitar does and excellent job on electric Blues, Southern Rock, Jazz, Hard Rock (even Kiss),and has the perfect character for the early Cream stuff (at least through an Orange Amp).Oh well, there goes yet another tax refund!

The pegs are a lil' short, so restringing takes a second longer. The action is fantastic. Like the SG getting to the 22nd fret is easy. Unlike the SG it's a beautiful ax. You can tell with my guitar that it's not production. It has flee's.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

This is simply, the BEST guitar I've ever had the pleasure to own. Artistry and craftsmanship is flawless! The guitar weight is so light when compared to a non-weight relieved Les Paul, although the guitars are similar in size.
The '57 humbuckers through a Marshall delivers that Eric Clapton-"Beano" John Mayall Holy Grail sound. I own the Tangerine Burst CS 336. I Love It!!

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

What a sweet guitar ! I own 3 Gibson Les Paul Standards and they are very nice but I am really happy with the CS 336 , its another fine instrument from Gibson ! This guitar feels so natural in your hands , and the tone is so incredible that you can't put it down . I had to take the neck pickup out and swap the pickup mount around because someone put it in backwards and the pickup was leaning way forward , thats why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars , ( No Attention To Detail ) c-mon Gibson , where is your Quality Assurance ? But that being said , this is still a winner and I am so glad I bought it . I will keep this guitar for as long as I live and then pass it on to my Grandchildren ! Thank you Gibson for making this model guitar , its really special , and thank you MF for making them available !

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

This is my forth Gibson, fourteenth guitar overall. The quality in this instrument is amazing. I've toured the Gibson factory in Memphis, so I've seen the quality that goes into these first hand. I was skeptical that this guitar wouldn't have much of a hollowbody sound but it does. The sensitivity and response of the pickups is amazing also.

I must admit that paying $2400. new for this axe has probably shaded this report but i like this better than my old 335.Ihave owned through 3 seasons and the neck hasn"t mooved. The tone and sustain is what gets me the most. They could have included a littly more glitz for the $$ ie.more inlay and binding. If you can find one for a good price, buy it.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

I have been playing guitar for about 30 years. I have played and owned many guitars over the years (gibsons, fenders and more). The electric guitars I currently own are a Fender American Standard Strat, an older bar seasoned rebuilt 'Tele and my new Gibson CS-336. It is hard to explain how amazing the Gibson CS-336 is, but I will give it a shot. The CS-336 is in a world of its own. The sound: there is nothing like it, I swear I don't know how some of the music happens when I play this guitar. Things happen. It can be clean, sweet, edgy, bluesy, heavy, hard, crankin, rippin and screamin. One last comment: when you order a Gibson Custom Shop Guitar, your expectations are very high. This guitar blew away all of my expectations and took me to a new place. Aside from the music part of the experience, the coolest thing was when I opened the case for the first time and could smell the fresh paint and varnish on the wood. The hand-made Gibson Custom Shop guitar was so new the paint had barely dried.

Wow! What a fantastic guitar! The action is amazing, the sound is fabulous and clear no matter how much distortion I use. It also has a really, really nice finish. I have the flame top / sunburst which looks just awesome. I didn't give it 10's across the board because of one small finish defect on the head stock plus I think it's a little over priced. Then again I think everything is overpriced. But man, is it sweet. I've owned Les Pauls and SGs and this plays and sounds as well as the Paul but is about 150 lbs lighter (kidding, but if you've ever hefted a Paul you know what I mean). It sounds great for everything; rock; blues; jazz. If you have the money you should definitly consider this guitar. M.F. charges $3,100 for it but I found it for much less at another web site any they matched the price! I paid $2,450 for mine and I think it's a keeper. I am quite happy with this purchase and have no nagging doubts about whether or not I bought the right guitar. This is IT!

i actually play drums in my band. My buddy is the one who plays guitar, but let me tell you, we are so amazed by the sound of this guitar it is amazing how it sounds. It can be a sweet guitar but it can also be an ear exploting guitar. The only thing that we didn't like was the pickups, we didn't like their tone, t made the guitar sound kinf of dull. so instead we changed them for a seymour duncan jazz humbucker (neck) and a seymour duncan jb model (bridge). Now with this new pickups on the guita, the guitar is more balance it sound harder than before. But we inpreased us the most was the body it is lean easy to play with, and it creates a great mellow tone and with the new pickups a mix of mellow and hard rocking tones, that makes this guitar the best guiatr we have ever heard.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

Having been a diehard Strat player, I "thought" the Gibson hype was just a little over the top, until I met "X-Caliber"... Quite frankly, I do not think there is a better sounding guitar out there. First.. the quality from the Custom Shop is excellent. Second, the figured maple top and contoured mahagony back with the center block makes this thing sing. Third, the 57's dig the strings out of tone limbo and bring them into a sphere my Strat may never know. In all fairness, my Strat still rocks, especially after yanking the stock p/u's out and putting in Suhr's, but there is something about this 336 that brings out tones that a Strat doesn't. The 6th string on a Strat never seems to have any punch, hit the 6th on this and you have walking bass lines that can compete with the best basses. As well, this guitar can go from wonderful clean warm jazzy tones to a hacked off lion with a turn of a knob. I will keep my Strat for specific types of playing, but my 336 will never be 2nd chair. This is a REAL AX.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

I purchased this instrument because I wanted another ES-335. They say buy two pairs of shoes and switch them each day they will last as long as three pairs that you wear each day. In other words, I did not want to wear out my 335 prematurely. I saw this 336 advertised and I figured I'd take a chance that I'd get a great sounding guitar, that was just a little smaller and lighter. I couldn't have been more 'righter'.The thing sings. It screams. I spent a little more for the flame top, but that's just eye candy. The bottomline is: get one. Mine buzzes a little out of the box, the action is microscopically low. But I'll change the strings and and let it sit before I have anyone fiddle with it. I think this is an experiment, so get one before they are gone.

I've owned a tangerine-burst figured top 336 for about 18 months and can't live without it. I owned a custom shop 335 for 15 years, but felt it was too large to handle comfortably (played great though). The 336 is by far my favorite guitar (I have a LP Standard and American Deluxe Strat too, and used to own a '73 LP Deluxe gold top). My only problem with this instrument has been the ABR bridge: it developed a rattle. I've since had the bridge professionally replaced with a Nashville Tune-o-matic and the intonation and action are to die for. I heartily recommend this guitar if you can swing the $$$.

Comments about Gibson Custom 2014 CS-336 Figured Top Electric Guitar:

Great guitar -- feedback-on-demand, ultimate sustain, good fat tone, fast (enough) neck, beautiful finish over the vintage s/burst flame top. I had to go through a couple of these to get a good one, though. The first one looked beautiful, sounded great, but wasn't Custom Shop quality in any way. Loose and poorly fitted hardware, rubbery neck, rattling bridge that wouldn't intonate properly, and worst of all -- a large crease, maybe from the old belt sander, but right on top of the apparently split and filled mahogany back. NOT "Custom Shop" quality for that price! (It was a "Scratch and Dent" item, but hey, that one should have never left Gibson's factory!) The second one, though, is a dream guitar -- all the good, none of the bad (except for the rubbery-neck factor -- they are quite slim, not unlike an SG). I can deal with it, tho', because it's so comfortable to carry and play, and sounds so damn good through my old Fender amps.
