Hagstrom

Raid and pillage stages worldwide with the Viking.

The Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar covers all genres from blues/rock to jazz/fusion and back again. With an arched semi-hollow maple body, its looks are as sweet as its tone. 2 Hagstrom humbuckers, combined with the resonant, semi-hollow body, provide plenty of power. And no Hagstrom is complete without their famous, fast-playing neck. The Viking has the patented H-Expander truss rod which provides tension at either end and runs the entire length of the neck. The rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin set maple neck.

Another Hagstrom exclusive, the resinator fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. It offers the articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast.

The self-lubricating graphite composite nut is much harder than bone or plastic resulting in more string vibration through the neck. Tuning is also improved and string binding is eliminated by self-lubrication.

A long travel Tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece further increase tone, sustain, and intonation quality. 18:1 gear ratio machine heads ensure fully accurate tuning.

The Viking's high-grade polyester finish is hard, smooth, and more dense than polyurethane, so its guaranteed to look great and provide excellent protection and sonic performance. Case sold separately.

Check the drop-down menu to the right to select colors and/or other options.

Having previously owned this guitar I would say that for a beginner to immediate guitarist looking to expand his/her collection or looking for something that can open up your tonal range to blues and classic rock. This would be the perfect guitar for you. If you are a professional looking for a project guitar this would also be a good choice. I do not recommend this guitar over any of the hollow/semi-hollows offered by PRS, Gibson, Taylor, and Godin. Hopefully I offered a realistic point of view for potential buyers. This is a great guitar but having a 335, JA-15, Multiac Jazz, and SC245. I modded my Hag with piezo from graph tech, gibson p/u's, schertler tuners, new wiring and jacks, tusq. nut upgrade and made this thing sound like a beast but at the end of the day I spent 3 times as much upgrading it than I did paying for it and I was still a little let down when it was all said and done.
The viking has a pretty standard layout of two tone and volume knobs with a three way switch. These semi hollows are not expected to have more options accept the occasional piezo or synth options (godin, carvin, prs to name a few). I can't subtract points for Hagstrom hitting the mark in this department. This is a vintage designed guitar so extra features are not asked of it. You do however get what you pay for with the tuners, nut, bridge...etc. Less expensive guitars may sound ok but at the end of the day you have to spend 400 or more just to even try and compare it to a higher end semi hollowbody.
Most people will think I am crazy for rating this a 6 but after reading the other reviewers compare this guitar to PRS and Gibson I must strongly disagree that this guitar does not come close. You have to consider a lot more when reviewing a guitar. Wood types, builder quality, components, and finally out of box conditions. By reading these reviews people are complaining about getting it set up or crooked parts or input jacks falling off. I dare somebody to tell me PRS does not do a significantly better job with out of box condition. So my quality is low because I am comparing the Viking to a PRS/Gibson and not an Epiphone or other more equivalent company.
Value I would say is right where it should be. This is a less expensive guitar offering decent tone and workmanship. However, there is no excuse to have consistent complaints of out of box condition, therefore I can not give a perfect rating. It is priced just right for what it is worth; unlike Gibson studios which are way over priced as well as Fender American series guitars.

I bought this guitar after reading lots of great reviews. I wanted it to be a "road guitar" so I could keep my old ES-347 at home. Now I think: what kind of guitar are people getting used to? This one sounds like a toy to me. I couldn't stand the sound of it so I replaced the pickups for Burstbucker Pros. There was an improvement, but not enough to make me want to keep this. It is Chinese, looks ands feels Chinese in every aspect. Only positive aspect is the shape of the neck. But the resinator fretboard just doesn't feel right. The tuning machines have what seems like plastic heads. Not a Gibson substitute in any way.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

This guitar is awesome, after scouring the internet for a month or so i finally decided on this guitar, and even ended up buying one without trying it, and I couldn't be happier. I didn't even plug it in the first couple days because it sounded so good.

I had heard that its tone was really nice (and it was) but that its craftsmanship may be less than stellar but after a fairly thorough inspection i could find no flaws, except for the odd piece of packaging that fell out of the F holes.

    Excellent guitar!

    Not For Me

    By Mike

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I ended up returning this guitar. Not because there was anything really wrong with it, but more from a matter of taste. Several reviews indicate this was a good all around guitar. It has a very clean sound and is probably well suited for jazz and BB King style blues, but IMHO it leaves a bit to be desired in the rock arena. There's a little punch in the bridge pickup, but unfortunately next to none in the middle position. This is probably because the neck pickup was very bass-y, even with the tone knob dialed to the full treble position. I doubt I would have ever used the neck pickup in its solo position.

Also the neck is quite thin. It might be fine if you have long slender fingers, but it's a bit cramped for my stubby, little hands. I found it difficult to finger certain chords without touching adjacent strings. For ex., in trying to play an A7 chord in the open position, I found that unless I placed my fingers very carefully, I would end up inadvertently muting the open G string (and losing the 7th sound). And who has time for "carefull" placement of their fingers when playing a song in time.

Musicians Friend was very good about taking it back with the 45-day evaluation period (I actually only kept it for two weeks). However, be forewarned that the freight costs to return it are your responsibility. I only mention this because it cost me over $60 to ship it back via UPS.
The guitar comes with nothing except an allen wrench. I assume the allen wrench is for the truss rod, but I never attempted to access it, and there were no instructions.

There is no case or gig bag included.
The finish on this was excellent for a guitar of this price. Frets were a little rough along the side of the fretboard. Not that big a deal, but it's why I gave it a 9 rather than a 10 in quality.
I don't have a lot to compare it against, but it seems to be worth the price.

    Impressive Semi-Hollow Body/ Reasonably Priced

    By Richard Barberi

    from New Jersey

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Overall this is an impressive guitar. Well build, high quality, great sound, very reasonably priced and looks awesome. If you're in the market for a semi-hollow body... this may be just what you're looking for.
Not a ton of features... That being said, this isn't a guitar that was built to have a lot features to begin with. Volume knobs, toggle switch for pickups, and tone knobs... about as straight forward as you can get. However, the tone knobs and toggle switch do allow for a lot of tonal possibilities.
When you pick up this guitar and start playing it you can immediately tell it is a quality instrument. The tuners are very solid and stay in tune nicely, the fingerboard feels great, and the paint job is awesome. Also, the pickups sound great. I run the guitar thru a boss me-30 effects pedal and a small crate amp- nothing spectacular, but I can still get a really nice sound out of this guitar. I've played a number of guitars that simply "feel" cheap... not this guitar. I was somewhat skeptical about it being made in china, but after playing it I have only one complaint...The input jack came loose the first time I played it... very easy fix tho.
Compared to many other semi-hollow bodies out there... this one is a great value. Less than $1000 and very well made.

Hagstrom Viking, the best all arounder

    By Trisha Dall

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Hagstrom cant be beat for value, tones, quality construction and the BEST neck truss system in the entire guitar world!!!!!
I have been playing a Hagstrom Viking for 7 years now. The tones are amazing, solo on the neck pickup and the tone is rich and mellow with nice deep lows and creamy mids, highs pop thru as well, the bridge pickup is great for metal and rock and clean clear jazz as well.....the body is comfortable and easy on the neck, the balance is slightly towards the neck but still not tooo neck heavy. An all around performer and keeper. I have two now and will be getting another, cant beat Hagstroms necks and playing action, I have a 1971 Swede and the neck is set super close and no buzzes and this is from a 40 year old guitar. Buy a Hagstrom...any of them ....you cant go wrong.
Finish quality is very high, no blemishes at all, smooth clear and gloss that is easy to clean sweat from later
Best bang for the buck, I have 6 Hagstroms...XL2, XL5, Swede, Viking, Jazz Model.....I will keep buying them

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

when I was a kid I grew up listening to the blues and BB King was my hero ( still is) and this guitar makes me think of him. I played others and this one just makes my heart beat a bit faster, it's love all over again. even with a not so great amp this baby makes me sound good. the feel is unreal in my hands and the tones just makes me want to keep playing. I even did a few rock songs and this baby kept up with every beat just like she was made to boogie. So go and try others but you will love this one...

    Coming Home...

    By smizell49

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

When I graduated from high school in 1967, my dad was stationed in German. For my grad gift, I got a hand-made Hagstrom Viking with the sunburst finish. I was ecstatic as I was already playing in a 8-show-a-week country band. It was a real beauty. Four years later, it was stolen from me and I was heartbroken. For the last 3 years, I've been waiting to get a good deal on a Viking and I found here on MF. I've ordered a lot of stuff from MF over the last 8 years and never been burned, but I was anxious about ordering this guitar online. Yesterday, it came and I have to say that I've never been more pleased. The setup was a snap with just a little bit of re-tuning with the new strings. But after about 15 minutes of playing, that problem stopped - I was expecting that there would be more simple problems to overcome, but so far, so great! What great memories this axe has brought back to me. Instead of the sunburst, I bought the gloss black. The finish is awesome, with just a bit of "squiggle" on the F-hole trim - only noticeable if you're really looking up close. I was surprised to see the neck strap screw on the back of the neck joint as the older models had it on the top horn. But that's no problem. But it looks and SOUNDS like my old Hag. I ran it clean and then through my effects and just sighed with contentment. The only drawback - there was no user's manual or manufacturer's warranty included, but I called MF and they're sending them to me. I don't like the fact that although this is an all-Hagstrom guitar (all components are manufactured by Hagstrom), it is assembled in China. I buy NOTHING that's made there, but I didn't know it had anything to do with China until I saw a small gold label on the back of the neck that said "Made in China". That's the ONLY bummer. But when I play, I guarantee it won't sound like it! A very fine git-fiddle that plays country, jazz, and hard rock with just a flip of the toggle switch. AWESOME! I'm in guitar heaven!!!!

    WOW, what a bargain!

    By Anonymous

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

Long story short: magazines and pro reviewers are giving two thumbs up to the Viking. One even stated that this guitar has more sustain than the Gibson 335, although the Gibson may have more complex tones. However, you can always work on your tone. The person below who call it "pure deception" either got a lemon or has no idea what he/she is talking about. This is a $600 guitar built with in-house components. It is comparable to guitars that cost three or four times more. It is made in China, but their quality control is awesome. The finishing is amazing and playability is excellent. This guitar can sing through a basic pedalboard and an all tube amp. From blues to rock, this is a great instrument. I have a sunburst with the Hagstrom case. Kudos to Hagstrom!

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

So i bought this guitar looking for a sweet new ax, and all i can say is that i got it. Sweet paint job, feel, and sound! everytime i perform my friends and the ladies always compliment on it! DUDES GET THIS THING! better then epiphone. much better for your cheddar. ummm i think thats about it. the only thing i dislike about it is that the paint job was a little iffy in some locations especially on the sides of the sound holes, but im a freak and looked at them really carefully. MEN if you are looking for a guitar that will sound great, and look great, and get you laid, this is the kicker. Its Big, Sassy. and i named mine LaFawnda. Enjoy

    to each his own

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

i perform solo, this puts alot of weight on the tone of the guitar, its playability and staying in tune. my method is finger pickin' with slide and when your on your own, you better have the goods. like many, i have the usual big names in my collection. when i purchased it i tried it thru a very low end amp, because my amp is a high end fender that brings good tone out of any guitar. this is the only guitar that doesn't fret out from top to bottom regardless of the set up and allows for quick slide to pickin out notes effortlessly.with the action pretty low with great delta sound coming from an electric. a tip for restringing. tear off a 4 inch piece of masking tape .. as you set the end of the string in place, press on that part of the tape and that end will stay put, do this the rest of the way.. its not my idea, lots of trapeze players do this.
