The headstock, fret board, pickups, bridge and strings are standard size. The body is one-forth the size of a standard body. The size is perfect for fitting into overhead compartments on airplanes. The case or lightly padded bag that came with the guitar is did not give me confidence it would protect anything. I opened up the seams and added additional foam padding. The guitar isn't balanced because of the small body. There is not enough weight in the body. The net result is you have to hold the guitar in your hands and arms to keep the headstock from dipping. I have a hard enough time learning how to play let alone fighting with it. I adjusted my strap every which way, but found that an acoustic guitar strap works much better at maintaining balance. An acoustic strap attaches to the body and the headstock rather than either end of the body. I was disappointed that all headstocks come in black, regardless of the body color. The advertised images show the same color (red, black or blue) on the body and headstock. The reply from MF was that it's a manufacturing decision by Hofner to go with one headstock color (black). I would have ordered black if I knew that. MF went on to say that these are stock images from Hofner. MF offered to exchange, but I wanted the color. Besides, who's going to see me practicing in hotel rooms. I purchased a headphone amp so as not to disturb others while practicing. The headphone amp plugs into the standard output jack socket.
In summary, great guitar for practicing while traveling.

This is a special purpose travel guitar and thereby really shouldn't be judged like a standard guitar. If you are considering this as your only guitar, then run away. The focus here is on portability so literally, all the corners were cut. It works for me, but it is a stark utilitarian tool. I can't recommend it for anyone, and especially not for beginners. If you are considering buying this for your kid because it is cheap, then also, run away. (Although riding to Grandma's house in the back of the mini-van with one of these would have been pretty cool.) The balance is really awful, and it is a challenge to find a position that keeps your hands free. It is head heavy. Maybe Hofner could have made a removable wire base or something to hold it in the proper position. As someone else mentioned, attaching the strap to the head works ok. I've attempted various contortionist yoga poses with it, locking it in my lap in the crook of my left knee. Crazy. I've tried sitting on the strap with it pulling the guitar down on the right side. Sitting back with my feet up on my desk and the guitar locked into the arm of my chair seems to work ok. If you're creative and flexible, you might find a position that works for you, but this ain't the most comfortable guitar out there. Maybe I'll bend up a removable wire base or hook or something.

Changing strings on this little monster is another challenge. Gaaa! Go through the hole, not under the bridge! Good luck with it. It plays and sounds better with heavier strings so it is worth the effort.

There are many reasons to hate this little demon but I'm actually loving it more every day. I keep it hidden under my desk at work and along with my Tablet, a Boss Micro BR, and some headphones, I have a serviceable lunchtime practice rig. After some minor adjustment, I'm happy with the neck. There are better travel guitars out there, but they are a lot more expensive. I bought this used so if it is lost or stolen, it is no great loss and could be easily and inexpensively replaced... and I would probably replace it. I have far better guitars at home, but I will take this with me on vacations and business trips and I love having this cheap little demon at the office.

Comments about Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar:

I bought this guitar a few days ago to take on a two week trip because I have gigs as soon as I return. I was hoping for something that I could just get by with that would be small enough to carry on my flight. After checking out all kinds of travel guitars on youtube, I decided on this one. I have since been playing this guitar constantly at home. This one had great action right out of the box as soon as I tuned it up. It plays very comfortably, stays in tune and has a really good sound. I am very happy with this purchase. If I lost or damaged this guitar I would definitely buy another.

Comments about Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar:

I really wanted to like this travel guitar but it is not meant to be. It looks good, it sounds good, and it plays good right from the box however the uneven weight distribution leaves you fighting with the neck to keep it held upright or in a comfortable playing position. I tried numerous sitting positions, I tried using a strap and I even tried one of those acoustic straps that ties around the headstock but alas nothing worked and the guitar kept dipping down to the left. Very disappointing because it is a rocking travel guitar. If Hofner made the body a tad bit bigger for your lap then this guitar would be a winner so in the mean time I am having to return it.

Comments about Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar:

My Shorty came two days ago and I was blown away! Blue with black headstock (I did not like the color matched headstocks in the catalog), great action, great sound. Yes, it's a little top heavy, but very manageable, my only complaint is difficulty in tuning, I think the intonation is a bit off but this can be adjusted.I would recommend this guitar to anyone, beginner or experienced ,very affordable, a great addition to the collection!

Comments about Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar:

I have to disagree with the negative reviews of this instrument. I have been playing for 40 years and the Shorty has far exceded my expectations. Of course, it's not going to balance properly. You should know that just by looking at the picture. You just have to find the right position for your right hand and everything will be OK. I've found that I can play amazingly fast on it and the pickup sounds good as well. I bought it to take on planes as I travel a lot but I will be using it for other things such as an alternate tuning guitar in my studio. This is a guitar every player should own. I would not recommend it for beginners as there is a right hand technique adjustment that needs to be made which could screw up a beginner as he is learning.

Comments about Hofner Shorty Electric Travel Guitar:

Great travel guitar, some set up work required..
I have the red version of this guitar.
This is a good little guitar, especially for what it is, very portable. It has a nice neck and fretboard, but the hardware is a little on the cheap side. The pickup is high output and it's great for rock, but a little rough for the clean stuff. It's pretty bright, especially for a humbucking guitar, but I suspect it's because there's not a whole lot of body there. As such, it takes a little getting used to in order to play it comfortably, but I play it sitting and standing with a rough leather strap and it works just fine. If you can't play this guitar, maybe this isn't your best hobby.
Now, right out of the box it was horribly set up. I spent 20 - 30 minutes adjusting the bridge down and adjusting the truss rod. When I was done, it now plays great.
The one thing I changed was the pickup, I swapped it for a Seymour Duncan Invader. That gave it a little more 'oomph', but the stock one is adequate for all kinds of higher gain stuff, I'm just an old metalhead.
Overall, it's a good travel guitar as well as just a decent guitar, but be prepared to do a full setup. The bag is good and it should travel as well as the Ministar it's replacing.
