Comments about Sterling by Music Man John Petrucci JP70 7-String Electric Guitar:

I own numerous high end guitars (prs, fender, gibson) including 3 music mans. I wanted a 7 string but didn't want to pay the $2K+ entry fee so I took a chance on the sterling model. Since I don't normally buy lower line instruments I was worried that I would be disappointed. I was wrong. I have smaller hands and was impressed that the neck isn't to beefy. The neck is nicely finished and I was able to adjust the truss rod to easily lower the action to my preference. The frets are finished well. The hardware including the bridge is good. I am not sure that I like the pickups (a little muddy to my ears but I don't usually play high gain pickups) and have purchased the real Dimarzios to upgrade. Really nothing to complain about for the price. The most notable difference is the wood for the neck (the body is black). Music mans usually have high end wood (flame, birds eye, rosewood) for the neck. This is just standard grade wood. It is not as nice as even a USA fender neck. It compares to my Mexican Deluxe PJ Bass. Small complaint for the price! My son has the Ibanez RG7421. I like the Sterling JP-70 better. The neck is more comfortable to my hands and it has a tremolo.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man John Petrucci JP70 7-String Electric Guitar:

This guitar directly comes after the original Music Man 7 strings series of John Petrucci guitars! In fact I've played on the JPXI 7 Strings and cannot find except minor differences between them and I was totally surprised by that! But I had to change the pickups and installed the Dimarzio Liquifire and Crunchlab to get the same sound of my other Music Man Guitar and I was really amazed that I couldn't even tell that this guitar within this price range EVER!
Just to avoid the confusion, the stock pickups are very good pickups but I had to change them to get the same sound like my other guitars only and no other specific reason exist. I would manage to buy another one with this awesome Satin Matt Black finish.

Comments about Sterling by Music Man John Petrucci JP70 7-String Electric Guitar:

I was pleasantly surprised by this guitar. The neck feels great overall; a very nice neck shape that makes the neck feel normal in the hand despite being wider than a usual 6. Overall feels slightly smaller than my old RG7420 neck. Fretwork in particular is very nice at this price point; no sharp edges which is my main concern. No fret buzz at the factory string height, which is a bit higher than I'm used to but it is easily remedied.

The trem is very stable and highly usable. My only qualms with the bridge is the sustain block is tiny and made of a weird composite metal that is not very dense. No aftermarket replacements exist so we're unfortunately stuck with it unless someone can machine a custom replacement.

Stock locking tuners are great. Nut is plastic / graphite so I have a Graphtech replacement incoming to correct that.

Finish is not bad, but it's a basic Satin Black so nothing too exciting there. I like the Black Hardware finish though and it would look very nice if I refinish the body in Mystic Dream.

Pickups are the weakest component but they're still pretty usable. I have a Dimarzio Air Norton 7 and Blaze Bridge combination I'm going to install.

Otherwise it's pretty great out of the box. Just needs a tune and basic setup and then it's good to go!
