OVERVIEW

A perfect travel companion with a Sitka spruce top and full Taylor tone.

The Big Baby Taylor Acoustic Guitar is the Baby Taylor's big sibling, a 15/16-scale Dreadnought with a solid Sitka spruce top and sapele back and sides. It boasts a surprisingly full voice, comes with a lightweight gig bag for easy portability, and makes a trusty companion wherever you go - even if it's just to the couch.

Sapele/Solid Sitka
Laminated sapele backs and sides and a solid spruce top make for crisp and well-defined sound in this versatile mid-priced guitar.

15/16-Size Dreadnought
Measuring just a fraction smaller than a full-size Taylor Dreadnought, the Big Baby is small enough to be a perfect travel companion, yet big enough to be a trusty performer.

Big Baby Taylor - The best of both worlds

I'm thinking about getting a spare cause it is that good and I am afraid Taylor may quit making them if they feel the GS makes the BBT obsolete. And it doesn't in the least.
The BBT is a great sounding guitar that is very portable. It is smaller than a normal guitar, but not as small as the Baby Taylor (which I tried and returned for its noticeable "small sound") or as small as the new GS Mini. The BBT's well padded case is great, I had it on planes in the overheads all over the world (except for Canada, they made me check it plane side, it survived just fine).
It went to NY (from TX) and back again strapped on a VTX 1300 Honda, it's also been to a few other states on the bike.
It has an LR Baggs pickup (self installed) that allows me to plug in and busk with it or show up at open mic nights. In short it is a great guitar for everything described above. It is worth mentioning I have a Taylor 414CE and found several of my guitar playing friends preferring the BBT over the 414 (I think they're insane personally). Lastly the GS Mini. I thought I might be ready to replace my BBT with the GS (thwarting the Canadian airlines) as it is 2-3 inches smaller than the BBT and here is what I found. I could not capo the GS to save my life. I took it back and worked on setting the action with the guitar shop but to no avail. As I use capos a lot, it was just not an option for me. Without capos the mini was awesome, I would say it may sound better than the BBT but not by much.
Anyway, if you want a good sounding, very portable guitar, (that you can capo the crap out of) the BBT beats out the smaller Martins (I tried one), the GS Mini, and the Baby Taylor.
No problems to speak of after 6 years using medium gauge Elixirs (against Taylor's recommendations) and the LR Baggs PU. It has traveled 25000+ miles and counting strapped to a motorcycle, in a car, and stashed on a plane. A very robust guitar indeed.
The 9 rating is because of the price increase. I got mine for $360 (on sale) some 6 yrs ago. They're now $450 or so, a 25% increase.

This guitar does need a few adjustments before it can preform optimally. Strings sit pretty high around the 10 fret, needs tuning constantly, and can sound a bit dull in open E. All of this can be adjusted, but I would expect Taylor to produce ready to play instruments. I use this for camping and small group jamming.

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

I always suggest that people try playing a few different guitars before thinking of purchasing one. Here is a good example. I have a BBT here and it is my favorite acoustic guitar. Excellent tone and build -- I would choose it over higher-end guitars in a heartbeat, but I'm glad I tried a couple out before buying, because I noticed quite a bit of inconsistency in tone after trying a few models. Taylor makes excellent guitars with a general bright quality to them, but each guitar is itself an individual piece of artwork with its own voice and tone coming from its construction materials and workmanship put into it.

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned two of these now and found it to be the perfect guitar as I travel and live on my sailboat... The weight is very light and the smaller body size is ideal for jamming in tight quarters.... Great tone and playability. I love it. My living environment is exposed to harsh marine conditions so I wanted a guitar that played well and wouldn't break the bank...the finish is somewhat porous and not a true hard varnish and will tend to look dry in time, so I plan to keep my new one treated in lemon oil to keep it from drying out from sun exposure.... The zipper on my gig bag froze up but that's to be expected from salt spray while in the dinghy. All in all, it plays great for outdoor beach and camp settings. I preferred the feel and play of this over the Taylor GS Mini which felt more like a toy. I plan to use a Dean Markley snap on pick up for gigs along the way.... Fair winds!

I only play guitar for three months so I don't have many experience. However, I do like this guitar a lot. It is easy to hold and has nice sound. It is unfair to compare it with other regular size guitar. Overall, the price, size, and sound are making it a nice choice.

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

It's a very low-risk buy. If you want a moderately priced acoustic to noodle around with, I can't think of a better-sounding and more playable guitar. I used to really love Martin Guitars, but none that I've played come close to the tone and the feel of the Big Baby. It's not a full-sized guitar, but I honestly would never be able to tell the difference had I not known to begin with - I actually prefer the size of it to most standard-sized acoustics I've played. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Also, the gig bag it comes with is pretty sweet

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

There are plenty of excellent and spot on techical reviews; so I'm going to hit on some other points.
I ordered this for a b-day gift for a friend. He has been playing 10+ years; I have been playing since grade school and am VERY picky in all things guitars!
This is a beautiful guitar and the sound/tone is comparitive to a much more expense guitar. It's at entry level price; but is far from an entry level guitar!!"Blown away" sums it up really well!!
The price is down right ridiculous for what you get!
The "gig bag" that comes with the Big Baby is very nice. Not your typical "free" cheap looking/ generic gig bag. It's impressive in itself!
I used a coupon code that was only redeemable over the phone. Don't be worried to call in your order vs. ordering on line! I kind of was....but it was not justified; no worries there! I saved another sizeable chunk of money and the rep I got (Duncan) was knowledgeable, super nice and even lots of fun!
The Big Baby arrived quickly and was in great shape! My only beef is that the 4th string/D was broken upon arrival. :( {As this is a b-day I will be going out tomorrow to buy a new set of strings because as you know it's no fun to get a guitar for your birthday that you can't play right away.} :) I'm just glad I opened the box to tune and check it before presenting it as a gift. Okay, yeah...... I did also just want to play it first too. BUSTED! ;)
Other than that the transaction was flawless! Easy to order (even via the phone), good communication, fast shipping and a beautiful, superior product!
I have ordered from Musicians Friends in the past and have always had great experiences! I would highly recommend both them and this guitar!! They both are amazing!
If you want a guitar that is easy to play, and has the tone, quality and looks of a much more expensive guitar for a much lower price.....then look no further! It's right here! I honestly do not know how you could score a better guitar for the money!
Order one....you will be so glad that you did! :)

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

After reading the reviews and being the owner of a nice 814ce, I decided to pick up a Big Baby. I wasn't expecting to be blown away as it's a made-in-Mexico, laminate body, mid-range 15/16 size guitar. The first one I received was outstanding as far as fit, finish, construction and setup. The problem I had was that it sounded flat and dead, with very little 'bloom', overtones or sustain. I know a few reviews indicated that the sound opened up over time, but this one was a little too dead-sounding. I contacted MF and was offered a quick exchange and pre-paid return shipping. Adam even offered to have the warehouse guys open up the replacement and check it out before sending. The replacement unit was sent a couple days later (no waiting for my return to be processed). Example #2 was identical to #1 in fit, finish, construction and setup, but the sound was an order of magnitude better! While not the equal of my 814 (nor would I expect it to be), it has a full, rich tone that is remarkable for a guitar of this size and pricepoint. Action is low and even, no high frets, no buzz even when I REALLY dig in with the pick. Clearly the first one I received was a rare lemon, and it wasn't THAT bad. The replacement is a superior value and fun as hell to play. The slightly smaller size makes it easy to throw in the car for an impromptu jam anywhere. Nice gig bag too.

Comments about Taylor Big Baby Acoustic Guitar:

This is a top notch guitar in its price range. Mine has ebony fretboard and bridge and a solid spruce top. It has no binding, but sounds great! Its all you need to play acoustically. Typically you don't get ebony in a guitar in this price range.

I will have to say that I had to lower the action a little to get it playing more comfortably to my taste. That can be easily done by a luthier, or a DIY guy like me.

I have had it just over a month. I have had several other acoustic guitars over the years.

I have gotten a lot of nice compliments from friends on it when I play it. I really wish Taylor would make a fancier, deluxe version of this with binding and maybe a pickup in it. The full scale length and decent body size (about the same size as a classical guitar body) help give it a full tone. It is also very consistent in tone and volume - good highs, mids and lows, and not too thin or too boomy. It responds well to the flatpick or fingerpicking too.
