OVERVIEW

An ultra-portable production pad and USB-MIDI controller.

The Akai LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller is a USB-MIDI controller for musicians, producers, DJs, and other music creators. The controller measures less than 13" across and weighs less than a pound so it fits easily into your laptop case, backpack, or messenger bag for extreme portability.

The LPD8 is based on Akai Professional's MPC line of iconic music production stations. Producers who love the feel of the Akai MPC and want to work with the software on their computer find that the LPD8 gives their laptop the controls they prefer to a mouse and keyboard.

The Akai LPD8 has 8 orange light-up pads that are velocity-sensitive for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. The pads can also send program-change information to software. Additionally, the LPD8 pad controller has 8 Q-Link knobs you assign to virtually any parameters in the software for hands-on control.

The Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller is plug-and-play compatible with Mac and PC computers requiring no software driver installation or wall power for operation. The LPD8 controller also has 4 memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to the music software programs you own.

I've had the Akai LPD8 for approximately 8 months now and I LOVE this controller! This thing (with a small mod you can find on You Tube) is the perfect portable controller. Of course there are BETTER midi controllers but are you a millionaire? Probably not. Even if you are then I would still recommend the LPD8 as part of your rig. I use the LPD8 to trigger samples, program drums, and occasionally play melodies. It's class compliant with Apple iOS devices so you can plug it up to your iPad and jam. The software that comes with the LPD8 lets you modify the 4 programs available. Do the math 8 Pads x 4 programs = 32 Pads. The LPD8 is a 32 Pad/32 Knob controller. And you can buy this for less than 100? As far as compatibility, I use this controller on Windows XP, Windows 7, and Mac OS X 10.10 as well as older versions of Mac OS X. I read some reviews before I bought my Akai that said it's easy to break but that reviewer had simply placed the LPD8 in his or her backpack and took it to class. Let's just say treat it like a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT or better and you'll be fine. I used to wrap mine in a towel when I carried it in a soft laptop bag. The LPD8 now has a special cutout in my modified HARD laptop case. The USB cord that AKAI supplies is SHORT guys so you might drop another 5 on a longer cable for doing live stuff. I think that covers everything... Oh I use FL Studio and Pro Tools LE 8 and Pro Tools 10 and all bueno! No drivers needed. No special configuration required.

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

Awhile ago I was looking for a pad controller. I wanted something cheap and found the LPD8. I was skeptical because it was small, but once I got it I couldn't be happier. I use mine for my EDM music in the studio and for DJing live. The LPD8 works better for DJing because it offers 4 different programs that I setup to use the knobs and pads for different decks. I love this thing and guanentee that you will too. Also, it works fine on Windows Vista and Windows 7, so don't listen to that bad review below this one.

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

I've had this controller for over a month. I use it with Ableton Live. I have not had any problems with the MPC style pads. However I do not program drums with the pads. I use them to trigger clips, samples and play notes. I like the editor. It is easy to use. You can use the editor to assign note and cc values. One thing I do is use the editor to assign notes in a scale to the pads. This way I can experiment without playing a note outside of the scale. Knobs work well and have a smooth feel. I've had no problems with it. Construction is solid. Editor is smart and easy to use. Great gear for the price.

    Great Midi Controller

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

Overall I love it because it adds the extra control i need and doesnt break the bank.
Great controller for added control in Traktro Pro. I use it mostly for Cue point juggling and does that super well! My only complaint is the knobs are sorta small, but not a big deal to me. The pads feel great and the lights are a nice touch
Feels pretty strong i beat it up a little just from hitting the pads from locking in cues when i need. I mostly use it for cue points like i said and i hit it alot so its great that it feels like itll take a beating.
    Great for the price

    Pretty Solid Piece of Equipment!

    By Devon Bordonaro

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

Overall, I feel the quality is good and it provides all the features I needed. I did not like how hard I had to hit the pads but I ended up returning it because I ended up just buying a synthesizer with MIDI mapping controls. For the money this is a pretty awesome buy!
It has a good amount of features. 8 pads and 8 knob controllers. The LPD editor software is pretty easy to use as well.
It's a pretty good quality. My only complaint would be that I had to really slam on the pads to get them to light up which made it a little difficult to quickly tap them. That may just be because of how hard I'd like to hit the pads but I feel like something a little bit more sensitive would be great.
For the money, this thing will do what you want and it seems like it will last. Can't get a lot for this much now.

    Good. Not without its flaws.

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

Reasonably solid device. Programming is simple enough with the included editor. My only complaint is that the pads are a little prone to double-triggering. As I finger-drum live with this device, it is annoying when it does that.Otherwise this is a solid MIDI controller for very little money. I love the light-up pads - that alone is worth the price. I am graduating from the LPD8 to the Korg padKONTROL for finger-drumming but will keep the LPD8 around for program changes, knob controls, and as an extra set of pads for some of those extra-large NI Battery kits.Great product. Would definitely buy again.

Great for composing music. Small and portable to save space. I do not use the software that come with it but that's not a flaw on this product. Easy to setup and overall good product.

For the money you can't go wrong. The editing and programing the pads takes a little bit. But once it's working it works great.

Would have given 5 stars if the editor software had been a bit better.

Comments about Akai Professional LPD8 Laptop Pad Controller:

Product is sturdy. Pads are quite sensitive as are the knobs, which I wasn't expecting considering the price. Works great with Ableton. Handles most everything I need to do when mixing a live set. Love the backlit pads, and the size of the unit would make for easy stacking if you used more than one.

This product is great for those just getting into electronic music, but the quality and features make it handy in more advanced scenarious as well.
