Keio Laboratories Inc. was formed in 1968 and was named for the nearby railway line and developed the first synthesizer in Japan. Keio Laboratories eventually changed their name to Korg by combining 'Keio' and 'Organ. The MiniKorg 700 was released in 1973 and was the first product to carry the 'Korg' logo. Since then, Korg has expanded the capabilities of the electric organ to incorporate sampling, synthesis, and drum machine technology. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Korg continued to build innovative synthesizers and keyboards, as well as develop music recording equipment and guitar effects.
