It takes just enough volume away to not be annoying while practicing in your room with the door closed. Not a dramatic reduction, so don't expect it to let you practice in the middle of the night with a sleeping person in the next room.

You don't need anything fancier than this simple rubber mute to assure that your sound level does not disturb others. Reduces your decibel level to a whisper. String response, intonation and bow strokes are not adversely affected. The mute simply dampens the vibrations in the bridge (and consequently through the sound post.) Don't expect much dynamic range, of course, because the audible sound will not rise above the very quiet. But it is fine for practicing fundamentals when the rest of the house is asleep or yelling at you to knock it off.

This does exactly what it says. It's an extreme reduced in volume, and your timbre isn't quite as shrill. Very good for beginners, and virtuosos with wives.

I'm a beginning violin student, and I still feel very shy about playing when there are people in the house. However, with this mute, I can practice at a significantly reduced volume but still get the full responsiveness from my violin. I really enjoy this mute. This is not really one to use during performance, but one that really takes the volume down for practice. Ideal for dorm rooms or apartments when an unmuted violin might anger neighbors.

I just bouarn with, and after I realized how loud those things are, I quickly bought this mute right afterwards. My experience with mutes is admittedly limited, yet I'm very happy with it. Its purpose is to loweght a (very) cheap violin to ler the volume, of course, but I've found it takes quite a lot of the harshness out of a cheap fiddle's sound as it does so. My only small complaint is that, being rubber, sometimes it clings to the bridge a little tighter than I'd like.
