The NS WAV series electric violin provides an affordable option for the serious professional and student player. The WAV Violin is passive and so does not require a battery.
The WAV 5 is a five-string version of the popular NS WAV series electric violin. Building on the same world-class design and workmanship of the original 4-string WAV, the WAV5 brings the extended range of the five-string violin to market at an affordable price.
Since its introduction two years ago, violinists of all abilities have hailed the NS WAV series as one of the most responsive, playable violins in its class. The WAV5²s carved maple body keeps its center of gravity close to the player' torso, giving perfect balance and maximum control. The adjustable shoulder rest molds to fit the contours of the shoulder for optimum grip and comfort. Fitted with the optional Balanced Shoulder Rest, the WAV5 rides almost weightlessly on a counter-weighted arm, freeing the musician' upper body and providing sure-footed support for even the most high-impact playing.
The WAV5²s streamlined neck and fingerboard enable blindingly fast fingering while preserving traditional reference points at the scroll and the upper bout. By raising or lowering the adjustable rock maple bridge, players can set the strings to the height they desire”high action like a classical violin or lower fiddle-style action for effortless, quick response. The tail-mounted tuners allow for precise adjustments and offer œset it and forget it stability unmatched by traditional tuning pegs.
The WAV5 matches its thoroughbred performance with exquisite sound quality. Built around NS Design' Polar pickup system, the WAV5 delivers a nearly flawless signal that raises the bar for clarity and natural tone. The instrument sounds good on everything from small guitar amplifiers to full-blown sound systems and has enough power to drive almost any preamp. The passive pickup system does not require a battery, making the WAV5 truly a œplug-and-play instrument.
The addition of the lower fifth string to the NS WAV series presents an exciting opportunity, not just to performers and students who wish to explore the creative possibilities of an extended range, but also to string educators who want to lead violin, viola, and cello students from a single instrument. As one of the most affordable five-string violins currently on the market, the WAV5 is expected to take its place alongside the original four-string WAV violin as a top choice among among music teachers, reinforcing NS Design' commitment to innovation in music education.

Comments about NS Design WAV 5 5-String Electric Violin:
Overall I would definately recomend this instrument over most competitors in this price range simply because after trying a Yamaha SV-130 and a few other cheaper brands this insturment just beats them in everyway including price and sound quality. Yes this review sounds bias against Yamaha and quite frankly it is because of my horrible experiences with those instruments.
Sadly the NS Wav 5 does not come with the on board reverb that the Yamaha instruments do but with my past experience with them, I prefer my Boss reverb pedal . The tuners are a nice change, especially for those new to the violin, they make it quite a bit easier and are less intimidating than the the pegs.
So far after owning the instrument for about 2 weeks I have found nothing wrong with it. Although one this to be carefull of is to make sure the end of the strings that go into the carved out body are not touching the pickup in anyway and if they do it makes an unpleasent hum when you touch the strings.
Value wise it is hard to beat. It sounds great, has 5 strings for those of you who want that, comes with a case and shoulder rest! Materials seem strong and sterdy. I even had enough money left over to by a Boss ME-70 which to me beats anything the Yamaha SV-130 on-board preamp can do.
Comments about NS Design WAV 5 5-String Electric Violin:
I had not played a 5 string and couldn't decide whether to invest in a higher end NS with a more violin-like sound or the WAV - which sounds better than my Barcus Berry Bridge electric fiddle. Decided to go entry level in case I did not easily make the switch to a 5 string rig and wanted to minimize my losses.
First off, when you get the instrument... change out the strings - the ones supplied are nasty. I put on a set of the NS strings engineered for this instrument, and they make quite a difference. Did not put on the strings I would for a classical violin - and wonder if those might be even better. Also, I brought it to a violin maker to file down the nut a bit to make playing a bit more comfortable (I could have done this myself, but wanted him to check over the bridge positioning and everything else). NS left the nut as an unfinished block, rather than shaping it at all like a regular violin, and I found playing in first position painful as a result.
Now, I am super happy. I actually am having to re-learn my fingerings and bow position because of that dang low C string - but the added range make it worth the basic practice time. I find it fun!
Overall - it is responsive, and very playable. I like the sound I get through my Fishman Mini - The fiddle does not sound as rich (with as many overtones) as my acoustic instrument, but it is close enough for rock and roll. Anyway, I am not sure that acoustic sound is really what I am looking for in an electric. Maybe someday I will find my way to try out one of the higher end NS violins. Right now, I have plenty to work with as I practice my technique and my sound.
