OVERVIEW

Compact, good-sounding, small format mixer with quality effects on board.

Regardless of the application, give your mix a professional edge with 256 onboard 24-bit DSP effects designed in partnership with Alesis. Choose from room and space delays, small and large hall acoustics, plate and spring reverbs, flangers, chorus effects and more. The ZMX122FX offers 16 variations of 16 professional Alesis effects from which to build, tweak, and dial in your sound. There's even a footswitch input so you can bypass all effects at the touch, or stomp, of a button. (footswitch not included)

The ZEPHYR ZMX122FX accommodates dynamic, condenser, and wireless microphones in the first four channels, as well as keyboards, drum machines, and other instruments in the two stereo channel inputs. What's more, you can easily plug in your MP3 player, CD players, or audio from a DVD player into the CD/TAPE inputs. You also have two AUX sends that you can use to send streams of audio from your mixer to a digital effects unit, stage monitor, TV screen, or any number of sources. Choose the ZMX122FX as the audio central command for your live performances, home studio, or video suite.

High headroom, low noise
The ZMX122FX packs an enormous amount of features into a very compact space. This compact mixer brings the same standard of quality to your performances as Alto's top-of-the-line models. All Alto Professional ZEPHYR ZMX mixers are designed with high headroom and ultra low-noise, discrete mic preamps so you always get the full dynamic range of your mix every time.

Sometimes venues are dark and it can be hard to see what you're working with. Alto Professional solves this problem by not only color coding each section of the mixer, but also by using brightly colored knobs so that you can easily find what you need to adjust before you ever lay a finger on the mixer. Our blue, red, yellow and white pots are instantly easy to identify in dim lighting. LED indicators for output level, peak, and phantom power also assist in making sure that you have multiple visual cues that compliment everything you're hearing.

FEATURES
  • 12 total inputs including XLR jacks with phantom power on channels one through four
  • Four mic input channels with gold plated XLR and balanced line inputs
  • Two stereo input channels with balanced TRS jacks
  • Extremely high headroom offering extra dynamic range
  • Three-band EQ on each channel
  • On-board digital effects processor and three-shelf EQ on each mono and stereo channel
  • Footswitch input for effects bypass (footswitch not included)
  • Two aux sends pre-channel for external effects and monitoring

I recently acquired a nearly new Alto ZMX122FX for a very good price, and I am really pleased with what it's delivering. Actually this was one of two options as far as small used mixers at my local GC. The other (a Beringer) was pretty dirty, but it did have more gadgets and a few more channels... Well, with a few months and some small gigs down, I can certainly confirm; I am very very pleased with my choice! Honestly the Beringer was alittle too featured (and I don't normally complain about such things). Lots of features on a big mixer handling complicated routings? Great! A small mixer with everything on it? Would have been fun years ago, but wisdom and experience tells me, the important features in a good layout generally makes for a much better experience, than all the features in a bad layout. In my mind, you only want to complicate a fist fully of channels so much, especially when you just need something quick. One thing this does have over the other is a power switch, kinda of a necessity IMO.

Well anyway enough rambling! To the point!
The Good:
-The sound: It it really clean and transparent, especially for the price tag.
Some hiss @ higher gains from the preamps, but not a problem if you set it accordingly. Still very usable; it's only a really high gain mostly
-Though clean and transparent, not stale and lifeless, doesn't flatten the imaging. Would be an excellent core to a budget studio
- the EQ is very well setup, and covers a lot of needs in just 3 bands
-The FX are very usable as well, they are tasteful and professionally executed. Not just a cheesy add-on to beef up the feature list. Clean and natural reverbs are always a plus in live sound. It really has a very nice quality FX, you might be surprised. I am so far. On a mixer this size the FX footswitch jack is going to be a useful addition.
-There is a nice balance between flexibility and simplicity here
-Includes phantom power (48v)!
-The size is great for small groups, sub mixing, and general tasks. It's compact enough that I often use it with one source just for the EQ alone , and a splash of effects.
-The layout is excellent in my opinion. Very simple, clean and to the point.
- Nice exterior design - Simple & classy. Doesn't look like a toy
- The design, to me, invites you to stick to making good music and clean sound, instead of juggling gimmicks and fighting with poor sound quality
-Durability seems good so far. I think it'll be around for the long haul. I transport it in a case (projector soft-bag) though. Has a nice solid feel to it on all counts. -Controls also feel smooth and solid
-I like the all rotary controls on a small mixer - keeps it compact, and also less prone to dust and dirt (a plus because this mixer doesn't really get coved because it is used quite often).
-One other thing I noticed, is there is no hum to speak of (a plus of the external supply). Also this mixer doesn't pick up a bunch of digital noise when using an internal laptop sound source.

The Bad:
-Wall wart. (does keep the weight and internal noise down in the mixer though)
-Made in China (quality control is good however)

Not the end all be all of mixers, but I bought this trusting that the look and feel would give me some indication as to the overall quality (hadn't even heard of Alto at the time). I have to say the purity of sound was not expected to this degree... I am pleased with this mixer. I will be keeping and eye on Alto for future equipment purchases...
Thanks for reading.

Do not be fooled like I was...this product got fairly good reviews, so I thought I would give it a shot to use for solo/duo gigs through a Bose L1 system...Yuck! The sound quality is the worst I've heard anywhere. All bass, zero treble no matter what you do with the "EQ" controls. all my speakers in my Bose tower clip...Horrible sound! Don't waste your time! buy a name you know and trust! I exchanged for a Mackie!!

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

I bought the Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer along with a pair of Alto TS110A 630W 10" 2-Way Active Speakers and was blown away by the sound. I had a pretty good PA system that we had used for 18 years in churches, singing Southern gospel music with my family. The sound tracks that I run from my MacBook Pro and the vocal harmonies are crisp and clean, with just enough bass, at least for me. I wanted to downsize and upgrade, and am I glad I did. Alto may not have the name recognition of some of the other better-known manufacturers, but with respect to sound quality (and isn't that what's it all about) I would put them up against anyone.

Happen to pick this up recently marked down. I was afraid the board would be to large for my desk. I was pleasantly surprised when the board arrived and was approximately the size of my old board yet has many more features. I stream a live radio station 24/7 with this board and have not had a single issue.

I'VE USE THIS NEW ALTO MIXER THE PASSED TWO WEEKENDS AS A DJ. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE GREAT SOUND THAT IT PUTS OUT. I BOUGHT IT AS A BACKUP MIXER FOR PEFORMANCES. I WAS USING ANOTHER MAJOR BRAND MIXER AND FOUND THE ALTO SOUND TO BE MUCH BETTER. I'M HEARING SOUNDS IN THE MUSIC SHARPER AND CLEARER THAN EVER BEFORE. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

The effects on this board are clean and most are extremely usable. I do mostly acoustic duo and tri work. This mixer paired with the Harbinger V2112 powered speakers is an insane "bang for the buck" PA setup. Mic preamps on 1-4 are great. I use RODE M1's, Shure Beta 58A's and Sennheiser e835's and they all sound great. I run direct (with no DI) on channels 5/7 and 7/8 with a Martin DX Series, a Rick Turner Renaissance Bass and a Composite Acoustics OX. I get sufficient levels from all three and the three-band EQ is a nice touch at this price. Would take this unit over the Alesis MultiMIX8 USB to save the twenty bones and because I will never need to use this unit as an interface.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

I did a lot of research and looked at countless small mixers before buying this one, and this is the most versatile compact mixer I found. No other small mixer this size has both monitor sends AND built in effects. This is important for band or karaoke use. And the effects are superb, too. Build quality is high, and it's dead quiet with a good EQ section. It's worth more, but for the price, it's a no-brainer. The only "con" I can think of is the wall-wart AC adaptor, which has a very thin cord, and is 18v AC rather than DC, so buying an aftermarket replacement might be tough. Otherwise, this is a killer little mixer.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

We got this device to isolate our 4 vocal XLRs during live performance. We have a 20 piece swing band and up to 4 vocal mics. We've been doing FX on the main mixer, but wanted to vocals to be independent of the FX on the rest of the mix. This device does the job. The FX are very much analog. When you listen thru the headphones you hear lots of "artifact" sounds common to these sorts of FX, but the FXs sound good thru a PA or mixer - the artifacts aren't present.

We also got this devices specifically because it provides a separate monitor mix we plan to use for Audio-only or earbud monitors. Most smaller mixers with FX don't have this. And the price was pretty good.

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

When researching this mixer before ordering, I came across a YouTube video demonstrating no effects on 12 and 13, Flanger and Chorus, on his unit.

I use small mixers like this for a few things, but I'm also providing Sound for a few small acts this New Year's Eve, so for the price of these refurbished units I bought three of them.

Well, turns out the same two effects, 12-Flanger and 13-Chorus don't work on any of the three.

That said, everything else works fine on all three, and for the savings I'm happy to live without those two effects, as there are plenty of usable effects left to use.

This mixer is great for small gigs, especially if the staging area is very small. The 3-buuton EQ works well, and the effects are surprisingly good. I use this mixer with my powered JBL speaker for mix and guitar live sound solo gigs. There are plenty of channels for extra mics/instruments, and for audio inputs. The only con is that the adapter for power is flimsy. I anticipate that I might have to replace the adapter, so I've already purchased a replacement adapter from another source (not available at MF), so I don't get a surprise on a live gig that the adapter wire shorted out. Be vigilant with the careful wrap of the adapter wires after your gig/session, and don't bend the wire at the exit of the adapter, because it will stress and eventually crack and sever at that point. If you take care of this unit (bubble wrap), and the adapter, you will probably get at least a decade of use of the great little mixer!

Comments about Alto Zephyr Series ZMX122FX 8-Channel Compact Mixer with Effects:

Nice Little Mixer. We are a 4 piece band and only use our mains for vocals and an acoustic guitar. We currently run three mics and the acoustic guitar through it and it works great. It is compact and very easy to setup and use.

Alto has good customer service. The effects were not working on the mixer I received. (It was a restock item, and that is probably why.) I emailed Alto just to make sure I was using the effects correctly and they got right back to me. I confirmed that I was following their directions and they got right back to me again with info on how to send it back to them for service. That is as far as I went with them because I just exchanged it with the vendor I purchased it from, but they did respond in a timely manner. They do not have 24/7 service though. You do have to wait for them to reply during their business hours, but they were still fast.

The only con I have is there are no real directions for it. There is a quick start guide and that is probably enough. It is a simple unit, but a little more detali would be nice.

I have not heard the effects yet so I can't speak to those. To be honest I am not expecting much. Just hoping to get a hint of reverb and I will be happy. The 3 band EQ per channel is nice and you can get a good tone out of it.

So I am happy with the product, and I believe the customer service will be there if I need it. I wold recommend this unit to a friend.
