Really now, what are you expecting for the price? Of course you're not going to get point-to-point wired, class A tube preamp construction. Yes, the distortion on it is decidedly solid-state. You're buying a little metal box for this much. Honestly though, this unit can really bring a lot of character to your vocals, especially if you're recording onto a computer. I record into a presonus firepod, and I use it for two things. 1) vocals. They really can breath a lot of life into a low-end mic. I have an MXL 990 that sounds fantastic when the ART preamp is in the chain. 2) guitar. Especially with the presonus, the preamps don't really have enough juice for a 1/4" instrument input, and the ART does a really nice job of boosting it and giving just a little bit of breakup when your push it. If you try to max it out to get guitar distortion, then you're going to hear that it's primarily a solid state preamp with a touch of tube flavor, but what's so bad about that?

I usually have pretty good luck with buying hardware. I read reviews before I buy anything. In this case of the ART tube MP, I was misinformed. I saw some great reviews on here about this product, then I saw the price and thought that with such great reviews and cheap price that I should just buy one because I know I'll use it sometime. Well, I got it, went to plug in a bass to the 1/4 inch jack, and the nuts on the sockets were loose. Not a good sign, but no problem I'll just get a wrench and tighten them up. It's a no go, the nuts are just stripped and keep turning. I can't even tighten the sockets up. Whenever I have a cord in this thing I can just move it up and down and feel the whole board moving inside of the MP. The xlr sockets are of course connected to this same board inside so those move to. I'm sure after awhile those loose sockets will start adding static noise to the sound so... I feel like I got screwed. As for the sound of this thing, I can't comment. After this situation I just got pissed and put it away. While the sound may or not be good, the quality of this product is not good. I hope you have better luck.

Worst piece of...

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

Crap ever. First, ART is notorious for having horrible stock tubes. Wasn't expecting much in that department so I bought a JJ 12AX7 and some Tung Sol 12AU7's. I opened it up to find everything had been soldered crooked. Horrible job. I used the Tung Sol's a couple of times and it sounded alright. Added a bit of warmth. But nothing great.Never even got the chance to use the JJ because the thing broke down on me after like the 7th use. Just save up a couple more bucks and get an Electro Harmonix 12AY7 pre.

Great Tool

By Alanc456

from Tuscaloosa, AL

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

This thing is a great tool for anybody doing home recording. I basically use it as a preamp now for all of my recording, on any instrument, except drums, I use a mixer. This little preamp does wonders on bass guitar!! I have a cheap little squier bass and it really improves the sound of it by leaps and bounds. I can't say enough about this little guy. The great thing about the input and output volume controls is that if you plug up something that generally gets alot of hiss when you turn up the volume. Well you can essentially eliminate that by turning the input up and keeping the output level low and voila your recordings will already be rid of that annoying hiss! But to sum up my review this is a great product at a great price.

Great for Ribbon Microphones

By Surfonica

from San Diego, CA

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

I built the Ribbon Mic and the ART Tube MP has plenty of gain and sounds just fine. Not the best mic pre around, but totally adequate for projects. Plenty of input/output options, phase reversal switch, and 20dB pad make this product a great investment. I've been using mine for more than 10 years, and it's still running strong.

I can't believe people!!

By Pittsburghscene

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

I was completely deceived! The first second I plugged it in and clipped it I said to myself "This is no tube clipping." Looked in the manual, sure enough it says the signal path is mostly solid state. Even so it only puts about 12v through the tube. Warmth? No never. Does squat to your sound only good for the phantom power. I A/Bed it with and without it on many tracks and it makes no difference.

Just the right boost and warmth!

By Sonny Miles

from Rochester, Ny

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

I purchased one as a recommendation from my music store dealer. I play a Roland VK-8 with a Ensonic lower keyboard and Hammond Midi-Bass Pedals. Motion Sound Pro-t with Low-Pro 120 and a twin 15' JBL cabinet driven by a Carver 1200 watt Mono Block Power Amp. The Art tube mp drives the Carver and the sound is dead on the B-3. The clarity and punch it adds to bass rival CD quality. Mid-range is fat and upper registers just sings. Its the perfect setup when you really want that fat Hammond reproduction from a high-end clone keyboard.

pretty good

By matt-Xs45o

from Jacksonville, FL

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

If you want this to get some overdrive or distortion tones, I don't recommend this product. However, if you want this to add a little compression and warmth to your mic, bass, guitar, or any other instrument, look no further. This unit runs completely silent and is surprisingly sturdy. If you push the gain to the point of audible clipping, the sound is not so pleasant. It might make a good ratty/fuzz effect but that's up to you. Putting in a higher-quality tube way help with the overdrive tone. But for what it's meant for, it does it very well!

Tube MP or God

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

Tube MP or God that is a good question. It's forty (40) bucks ($). And it works great for mics, guitar, bass etc. Get this if you have an amp it improves your sound quality immensely.

I can recommend this.

By Timmerus

from Tipp City, OH

Comments about ART Tube MP Professional Mic Preamp/Processor:

This unit has added both tube warmth and extra boost to my mandolin's microphone. (I'm using a cheap but sensitive condenser mic.) The ability to control both the input and output levels makes it particularly flexible. Works as a DI box too! Great value, pick one up.
