Having been an active vocalist for almost ten years, I would highly recommend this microphone to anyone looking for an upgrade. Prior to owning this mic I used a Shure SM58 for about seven years, but after that time I felt as though I was working too hard to get the nuance I wanted while playing. Also, during long gigs I found that my voice would show more fatigue as I began working to sing songs more musically with finer detail to inflection and other vocal effects. I purchased this mic after performing a side by side comparison with several Audix Mics, Shure Beta 87, and several Sennheiser products and to my ears this mic won easily. It provides a very clear and uncolored sound while maintaing a great deal of detail and presence. This mic very naturally cuts through a mix without sounding harsh, and therefore is probably better suited for a lead vocalist. I also am a co-owner for a small regional sound company and this is the mic that we always give to the artists that will use a wired mic. So far its worked for: Pure Prairie League, Mel McDaniel, and will soon be used by T Graham Brown, as well as several other lesser-known artists. I don't claim to be an expert on sound, but I feel that I probably know enough to tell most consumers that this is a great purchase, and if used properly this mic will provide years of service.

I covetted this microphone and so made the investment a year ago. LOVED the mic BUT . . . after 6 months of fairly limited use I plugged it in for a show and it simply would not work. I was shocked and had NO idea why. Because I live near the factory, I dropped it off and AT repaired it. They were VERY good about that to be honest. No hassel at all. Unfortunately, I plugged it in for a show a few days ago after another 6 months of extremely limited use and it failed again. Unfortunately, as much as I like the sound of this mic, I am sending it back. I just simply CANNOT afford to find myself w/o a working microphone when I am on stage. It is truly unfortunate but I am forced to look at other options!

USED BY THE PRO'S - EXCELLENT

By John-R_GAo

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

This is the real thing; a true studio recording mic built into a hand-held format. It cuts through the mix and is everything the manufacturer described. I'm a classically trained tenor with a 3 octave range. I saw Andrea Bocelli using this mic on his "Under the Desert Sky" DVD. I think there's a good reason he chose to use it. I own this mic and the Neumann kms 105. I like both equally, this mic is a little brighter in sound and hotter than the Neumann. Both produce a very nice warm sound. Comparatively the Neumann is not better sounding; and at almost double the price it's not justified. Save your money and buy the AE 5400 instead! You'll sound great and you'll have more jingle in your pocket too. Keep on singing!!!!!

This Changes EVERYTHING!!!

By Josh Stone

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

I am a worship leader/ singer/ songwriter and have been singing and making music my entire life. When I purchased this mic, I expected it to be major steps up as far as sound quality....let me just say... I had absolutely no idea what I was in for!!! Without exaggerating...This mic literally changed the way my brain perceives quality... If you are going to be performing for people, you will not be able to make a better decision than BUYING THIS MIC!!! It simply does not get any better than this. I was a little apprehensive spending this kind of money on something I had never tested, but Musicians Friend has an awesome 45 satisfaction guarantee... however, in this case... They are not getting this baby back unless they pry it out of my cold dead hands!

Great Vocal Mic!!!!

By Dave-fM.gx

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

This mic is an amazing mic for live vocals. Tons of clean gain, crisp, clean sound that cuts through any mix. I've used it in many live settings and it has always gotten the job done. I've also used the wireless version of this mic, and it too is a great mic.

Good Mic but too hot

By SleeveDotCom

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

This mic sounds great but has too much gain. I bought a Shure Condensor, and another brand condensor. Of the 3, this is the hardest to use live due to it being so powerful. It's hard to control compared to the Shure condensor. Of the 3, the Shure condensor is the best.

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

The AE5400 is the SLEEPER of all condensers! I have tried them all: Sennheiser e965, Beyerdynamic TG V96c, Neumann KMS105, Gefell M900 to name a few. This hangs with the best of them at a fraction of the price! Nice balance, clarity, and power. It's just pristine clean! Don't read too many reviews or fall and believe advertisements: companies who advertise are desperate for help! Enough said!

    Service and delivery comments:

Musiciansfriend staff are super nice and professional! Fast service and shipping. Highly recommended!

Saw Eric Clapton backup singers was using it and decided to try it. I really like it and when recording, my vocals are crystal clear with just a little compression added. Live however I ran into a booming problem with it. Swapped it out with one of those very nice Shure KSM8 DualDynes and the problem went away like magic. I guess I could have engaged the HPF on the AE5400 but the KSM8 excelled!

Comments about Audio-Technica AE5400 Cardioid Microphone:

I have quite a locker of mics. Situations require me being ready for a mic change off the cuff.
While this mic is not the brightest condenser in the bunch-it just might be the warmest.
Many people call a mic warm when its actually just lacking in the high end dept.
This mic has a nice sheen top and and actually has a warm character.
It is definitely the hottest mic I have, and its not a problem to me.
Its a bit heavy and might become a bit burdensome for hours of being held in the hand at a time, but I'm sure it could withstand a ton of abuse.
        Built like an Abrams tank.
