The build quality of this microphone seems very sturdy and solid.

For sound quality, on the good side, this microphone works very well for high pitched instruments / bright formants. It adds more body to the lows and helps high instruments have more dynamic range. If you were just recording high pitched sources, then this is a great option.

On the down side, this microphone does not handle low instruments / low formants at all. That low boost it gives will ruin the sound for low instruments. It's rough sounding and adjusting the microphone angle doesn't seem to help anything.

So in all, this microphone is good for certain applications but definitely not low pitched sources.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

Here is the deal with this mic, EXPERIMENT WITH PLACEMENT in relation to vocals. I've had artists so accustomed to being right up on the mic during recordings, they insisted on doing so with this mic. Bad idea. I have found that with this mic and vocal capturing, put a little distance between artist and mic and you should be pleased with it's quality. I use this mic and an older ADK A-51 and I must say that my 4040 gets the most work.

Good mic for the price

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This mic is a really good buy for the price, although you shouldn't think that it will sound as good as an expensive mic does. This mic excels on acoustic stringed instruments, and is a very decent mic for vocals, although it is a little bit lacking in high end definition and clarity, or another way of saying it would be to say that the lows, and low mids are way too loud. The mids, however are very clear and good.Thankfully their is a low pass filter, which greatly improves the mic's sound on all sources, except for bass. With the low pass filter engaged this mic sounds good on acoustic guitar, and decent on vocals. Their is also a very strong proximity efect with this mic, it sounds much better when positioned farther back. However, all in all this mic, with proper placement and use of its filters, can produce very good, and professional sounding results. For the price, how can you not pick this up?

Excellent Vocal Mic

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This is an excellent vocal recording microphone...I usually have mine going into a Behringer XENYX mixer, then to a DBX 166XL compressor/limiter, and then into my 24/96 MOTU Firewire interface into Logic. Works like charm and has a wonderful warmth, and captures pristine detail. Very happy with this purchase that will last WELL into the future.

AT4040

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This microphone is hands down the best condenser in this price range. I was able to directly compare this mic with several others in the same price bracket and it is amazing how much this guy stands above the others. Using a presonus tube preamp into an alesis compressor, this mic records vocals and acoustic guitar with such beautiful tone. It is warm and full, and retains clarity. Build quality is of top notch. (Made in Japan.) This is a great deal for anyone looking.

This microphone is Great! I get excellent quality vocal recordings everytime! As far as using this Mic in front of my amp. I have yet to capture a decent recording...maybe I'll try the SM57 teamed up with the AT4040.

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This mic is so very sweet! I sung a gospel song in high soprano and it really handled it well. The balance of the lows in the mike melted my heart while laying down every vocal track. It really invigorated me to sing my heart out because I loved every word that flowed from my mouth through it. I have always been a fan of Audio Tech for years and I would recommend this mic to anyone who is serious about there music.

pretty good mic

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

I have a pair of these in my studio. They work very well on voices and instruments. I've used them on male voices, female voices, acoustic guitars, room mics, drum overheads, room mics. I've had great results on all applications. I would recommend getting a high quality cable, I use Mogami Gold or Blue Kiwi cables myself. I'd also recommend that if you are serious about sound to buy this mic a good . But for this price range you can't go wrong. I also own Sterling Audio ST55 and ST66 condensers in my studio and have used C414, TLM103, U87, C12, KSM32, AT4033, AT4050, etc. This mic can hold it's own, definitely a major step above a Rode or AKG in this price range.

Product is amazing for this price. Well thought out. Great for voiceovers and recording. I am a live streamer on Twitch and I use this as my daily driver for my weekly streams. I have never had a problem with it. Bass is great, and all other sound sounds crisp and clear. A LOT better than my previous, clip-on mic. Top of the line for under $500 - $800 I would say

Comments about Audio-Technica AT4040 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Mic:

This microphone is one of those go anywhere do anything mics. It sounds good on lots of sound sources and also does an excellent job. I have used this mic for my sax recordings on albums, flutes, clarinets, guitar amps, pianos, and much more. It has a very even clean sound that is very easy to work with. It is not particularly colored or weighted mic, but it does have a slightly brighter sound than the at4047, which is also an excellent mic. So this mic tends to respond better to sound sources where clarity and bright sounds are preffered. (Strings, Piano, Room Micing, Cymbals) All in all this is a great all around studio mic that works great in a wide variety of applications. And the price is very good to boot.
