Comments about ATH-E40 Professional In-Ear Monitor Headphones:

Great sound but I prefer the sound isolating tips, that come with the Shure 215 earphones. You actually get two types with them, unfortunately because of that one discrepancy I will go back to the Shure 215.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-E40 Professional In-Ear Monitor Headphones:

I rate myself "talented amateur". Huge pedalboard, guitar synth, play parties and small venues. Most playing time is at home. My wife uses ear buds with the TV. I wanted to try IEM so that we could co-exist while enjoying one another's company. Also hoped to use IEM for gigs to get a better grip on my vocals (using a Voicelive 2)...but the experiment never got that far. A couple of general things...
First, I now grasp that this type of gear is clearly designed for use with a radio transmitter/receiver with the IEMs plugged into a belt mounted receiver unit. This is evident from the short cord length. I have no money for that, so I used an extension cord. That worked for me, sort of, because I play seated on a stool, so I mounted my plug outlet to the back of the stool, with the short cord from the IEMs plugged into that. Fine until you forget and walk away to do something....OW! This is not a criticism of the ATH-E40s, but stuff for buyers to consider in general.
Second observation is that IEM's are really tricky to buy by mail-order because everyone's ears are physically different in shape and configuration. I have always had trouble with ear buds, ear plugs etc, but I was hopeful. To optimize my chances I also bought separate Comply foam tips.
Finally we get to the trial of the ATH-E40s. Very disappointed. Sounded like I was listening through a telephone...almost no bass. When I cranked the volume the highs and mids were harsh. I tried everything to get them fitted right..screwing, wiggling, everything short of driving them in with a hammer. Tried all the supplied silicone tips, and then all of the foam ones that I bought separately. If I pushed on the IEMs with my finger the bass came in and they sounded decent...but as soon as I look my finger off they would creep back out of my ears...visibly so. Almost no sound isolation from outside. Maybe they will fit you. I really wanted to like them, but my standard white Apple ear buds sound WAY better!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-E40 Professional In-Ear Monitor Headphones:

I play keyboards in a wedding band weekly and these are perfect. Ive used shure 215s in the past and remember not liking them. In regards to the review about isolation that was not a problem for me with the tips that came with it since my band does not play too loud but I got much more isolation when I changed the tips to the comply isolation tips which I highly recommend for comfort as well.
