Here is my honest review for these headphones.

PHYSICAL FEATURES
The two detachable cables are a very nice feature. I do, however, wish that they also came with a third short cable like the ATH-M50x. The cables feature a proprietary "twisting" locking mechanism so that they cannot accidentally be unplugged from the headphones. Both cables have a 3.5mm plug, and the headphones come with a 1/4" adapter which can screw onto either detachable cable.
The headphones are made out of thick hard plastic. They are not insanely durable, but they are durable enough that I would not be able to break them unless I intentionally used excessive force. With proper care, these should last forever. The two detachable cables are also very durable.
Comparing to the ATH-M50x, these are lighter and fit more snugly. If you have a small head (as I do), you should certainly consider this. The ATH-M50x's actually fell off my head quite easily. This is not the case for the ATH-M40x.
The headphones fold into a compact design and fit snugly into the provided carrying bag.

COMFORT
The ear pads are extremely comfortable. I have worn these headphones at my job for 8 hours straight with no problems except occasionally having my ears get warm. This isn't really an issue because an occasional trip to the bathroom will give your ears a minute to cool which is all it needs.

SOUND ISOLATION
Sound isolation is not great, as these are not designed to be noise-canceling headphones. However, they do contain the sound in your ears quite well. I've listened to these headphones at my job, which is a pretty quiet office environment. I can listen to these fairly loudly while having the person sitting at the desk next to me not notice at all.

SOUND QUALITY
This is really where these shine. The sound quality is amazing, and if a flat frequency response is what you are seeking, look no further. You simply cannot find another pair of headphones in this price range with this sound quality.
Comparing them to the ATH-M50x, I actually prefer the ATH-M40x. The ATH-M50x ever so slightly emphasizes the lower frequencies. Again if you're looking more for a flat frequency response (as I was), the ATH-M40x are a better choice. (Plus, they are almost half the price.)

OVERALL
I cannot recommend these enough. I know this is cliched, but you actually do hear things that you never noticed before when listening to these headphones.
I use these for mixing (and I know, technically closed-back headphones should not be used for mixing), but I am on a budget and these headphones have proven to be invaluable.
The value of these headphones is really amazing. They are easily worth double their price.
These are not very flashy headphones. Available only in black and with a very plain design, they are a "strictly business" pair of headphones which are durable, feature-packed, comfortable, and sound amazing.

I would give these a 5 star rating if they didn't break from a flawed design and became useless. They do have great sound for their inexpensive price. But . . . where the ear pieces swivel, the plastic has way too much stress on it (poor engineering) and will crack and break off in time, rendering them useless. With mine, one side broke off completely and the other side is cracked in the same identical spot. If I could still use them, it too would break off soon. How long were they cracked before one of them broke off, I don't know, as I never suspected them to do so and wasn't checking for cracks in the plastic. If I had seen the cracks before the one side broke off, there isn't anything I could have done to prevent it anyway. I never dropped them, nor abused them, and always hung them on a hook to protect them, as I really loved them until they broke. Audio Technica's Customer service was very quick to respond to my request to buy the broken parts, but wanted me to ship them to them for repair. With MY cost for 'return' shipping, plus their repair cost, I might as well go for a new pair and keep the broken one for spare parts. That said, I would not buy these again however, as I would not want to go through the disappointment again of the plastic breaking into two pieces. If I didn't use them much, they might have lasted forever, but as I use them on a daily basis in the studio, it was just a matter of time before the plastic cracks, breaks off, and they no longer can be used. A perfect example of "a chain being only as strong as its weakest link". Audio Technica will kindly offer to repair them, though spending the time to fix the poor engineering might be time better spent. As I really liked them before they broke, I had recommended them to several of my sound engineering buddies as a good inexpensive investment. Hopefully they didn't buy them, as I don't want to be responsible when their's eventually snap into two pieces like mine sadly did.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I loved these headphones with all my soul but the rotation of the cups are a little weird. Mine recently broke when the right cup got stuck and i was the plastic holding it together broke off. I could not believe it because i barely put any force into it. if you pick these up and rotate the cups the wrong way they can break off fairly easily. Im in the process of claiming my warranty but even tho i love the M40x im scared of the fragile design. Im most likely gonna trade my new pair in or sell them to work for a pair of M50x or M70x.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I bought these to replace my 4 year old m50, which had a broken hinge. The m40x is a good replacement and is actually lighter and more comfortable than the m50 in warm environments. It comes with two cables, one coiled and the other straight, and this was a huge upgrade from my old m50's as the straight cable non-detachable cable was prone to tangling. I am not an audiophile but a casual listener, but in my opinion, the sound is just as crisp and flat as the m50. There is some sound leakage, but it is expected for a headphone at this price range and it was not advertised as such. I would definitely recommend these for the casual listener.

Best headphones in the bang for buck ratio!

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

Audio-Technica's ATH-M40X headphones are my all time favorite headphones. These are the new and improved versions of Audio-Technica's ATH-M40/FS/45 and other older M40 headphones. These are just as comfortable as the ATH-M30s but with nicer padding on the cans and bands and are mostly made with metal and plastic. These come with two cables one 9 foot one for home use and a 4 foot for portable use. These headphones have the best sound quality that can be compared to headphones costing 300 dollars or more. These headphones are flat sounding meaning that all lows, mids and highs are brought out evenly and superbly. These M40Xs bring out all the subtle details in music that most headphones can't produce. An example would be the acoustic guitar in rock bands that no one hears. These are fantastic with every genre and I love the nice studio sound they give with well done detail and separation of all the instrumentations and voices. These, even at the highest painful volumes, create no feedback or distortion. I highly recommend these to everyone who loves music.

        Excellent return on investment here

        By MGinOttawa

        from Ottawa, ON, Canada

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I am a very experienced headphone user of many years. Currently I own a few sets of very expensive headphones and a nice home headphone amplifier. I will admit that I purchased the M40x not expecting to be very impressed. Well I am extremely impressed.

The headphone is comfortable and the overall sound signature is slightly warm and balanced with very well extended, but non-sibilant or fatiguing treble. The sub-bass isn't that pronounced, but it is certainly adequate and the emphasized mid-bass gives the music an engaging quality.

The M40x does a commendable job with instrument separation and detail retrieval. I also find the bass response fast, but there is enough decay that the notes last long enough to sound natural. I listen to a great variety of music with an emphasis on well recorded material, but even with hot mastered rock and pop the M40x felt poised and articulate; far more so than I expected and in my mind, more than a reasonably priced headphone should.

You certainly could drive it well enough with the output from a phone or a DAP, but it scales very well and benefits from adequate amplification. When I drove the M40x from my home system which has a very good DAC and amp I was very impressed with the performance finding the sound signature very good even when compared against my considerably more expensive orthodynamic headphones.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I'm a Producer/Songwriter from Chicago, IL and I could've spent hundreds of dollars on a pair of any competing set of studio headphones but I took a chance on Audio-Technica because I love your condenser microphones. So when I ended up purchasing the ATH-M40x, I knew they were part of the latest series but didn't expect much in lesser price range.....I ate those words immediately after I took a listen to some of my favorite songs as well as my own mixes. I love the fact that I can be so confident in such a reasonably priced pair of headphones for general listening as well as tracking and mixing to the point where i'm making people that don't make music at all go buy a pair as soon as they hear mine. The 40mm drivers are EVERYTHING, amazing flat response, simplistic design & the included leather carrying bag has been such a big help. I went through a short period where I was creating and mixing tracks with no monitors and all I had was a cheap interface and the ATH-M40x's. As it turns out, when I play my mixes for actual engineers, they're incredibly impressed and always say things like "you know, it sounds perfectly fine just the way it is". These have been my life-line and will continue to be a part of my mobile setup. I will eventually get a pair of M70x's however, I will always keep these at bay just in case. Thank you Audio-Technica and continue to make dope products.

It's a really great product. It's a bit pricey in my country but it was worth it. The sound is very accurate. I would not call myself an audiophile but the sound is really great. My only problem was that the hinge got broken but I got it repaired from a 3rd party service who just used some soldering iron. The ath-m40x was my first good pair since I'm only 13.

First off....the sound quality is unbeatable!! Very true flat phones. I have cranked the volume very loud with no distortion and you are able to hear everything! The padding on the cups get a little warm but nothing that can't be ignored. The isolation is great....and did I mention the sound quality! Unbeatable in a headphone at this cost!!! the plastic makes me a little nervous, but it hasn't broke yet (after 9 months of wearing ALOT)

As a college student i routinely listen to music, play video games on my computer, and audio edit videos. From the 100+ hours of using this product i can say without a shadow of a doubt that these headphones are worth every penny they cost! These headphones have gone head-to-head with other headphones, costing several times more, and have stood their ground. The only drawback i can think of would be that the headphones will occasionally pick up a small buzzing sound from the impedance of your computer system, which can easily be fixed by a digital-to-analog converter.

User of 15 year old Sennheisers eH2270 (similar to HD280 I believe) which are to my ears very flat, these M40x cans are also very flat but I feel much closer to the music whereas with the Senn's the cups are larger and deeper and feel more distant. It's just a different experience. I only ready reviews and watched comparison vids from a popular resale shop on YT. These M40x's have good impact, clear sound, not too bright or muddy, not too bassy. I have heard the M50x have more emphatic lows. I love these and for the money I am almost hurting myself patting my own back. I got a "blemish" but they are unblem'd as far as I can see. I think I could mix nicely on these going back and forth with my Yamaha HS50s. Yeah I'm low budget. Time will tell. Oh and they are super comfy. Plastic but very solid and fold up small.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I use these headphones to mix all of my music before going into studio to final mix, they are incredibly reliable and have found no faults in the quality. I have compared these to the more expensive ATH-M50X model, and for almost half the price the ATH-M40X headphones take the upper hand due to their Flat Frequancy response that the M50X's don't have!

way better than beats or any other overpriced garbage headphones, quality build and audio very impressed. only problem is the extremely long cord..although i can't really complain about it because these are meant for studio use, but it would be nice to have a "normal sized" cable as an option. other than that i love them.

These were a great choice. I'll never do mega-mixdown sessions but for extended wear they fit snugly and don't want to fall off when I tilt my head. They replaced a set of phones that were old and only 20mm's, and the difference in sound is amazing. I can turn up the volume to the point of pain and they still sound great. Anyone worth their salt as a sound tech should own a pair of phones in this price range, and these certaily are worth the cost. They are also a handsome set of cans to wear proudly and show your dedication to the profession! The only fault was that the cord doesn't lay flat when strung out. It could use more flexibility--one of my pet peeves with cables. I also don't like the swivel action of the earcups--I find myself wrestling with them to position them when putting them on. That's for a DJ.

I loved the sound of these headphones in store, but they are so uncomfortable that I have given up using them. I have tried to stretch them out by stretching the ear cups over a box and leaving them for five days, but they are still so tight that they literally induce salivation in my mouth. I have a small head. For $160 (what I paid for them in store) they are completely not worth any of the money. I cannot use these headphones anymore and I will not purchase anything from Audio Technica going forward. Very sad, the sound quality is phenomenal and I had looked forward to using them.

They have no competition in their price range if sound is what you are looking for, but for me it is very annoying I cannot use them with 1 hand, something always clicks and closes. I think if they had only the 90° swiveling without collapsible ear-pads they had a stronger build, maybe had been cheaper and could have been used with one hand. I consider the collapsing feature rather a design flaw than a benefit considering I travel like 1000 times less then I put them on and off my head.

Comments about Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Closed-Back Professional Studio Monitor Headphones:

I bought these headphones for use as a DJ to replace my old pair from another company. I've been using them for just over a week and decided it's time for a review. I'm impressed with the build quality. My old pair of headphones are a little larger than these so to me these are fairly compact and sleek for over ear headphones. The headband is metal and maybe a little stiff giving a firm clamp force that was a little achy to wear at first but now I don't notice it. The headband and ear pads are soft and cushy but feel durable. I don't anticipate the material to flake off like my old headphones. The ear cups and the yokes connecting them to the headband are plastic. The yokes may be an issue, only time will tell.

I'm sorry to say there are two things I don't like about these headphones. First, I'm not a fan of swiveling ear cups. It's nice that you can hang the headphones around your neck with the cups swiveled out away from your chin but putting them back on your head can be difficult because they can fold into weird positions if you're not careful. Second, the sound quality is lacking in detail/treble. These are my first pair of "flat" headphones. The bass and mid range are well represented but the high frequency is subdued. As a result the sound is muddy, lacking detail. This can be corrected with a graphic EQ program on my laptop but not on most stand alone devices like my DJ mixer.

These are OK and I can make use of them but I'm continuing my search for headphones more suited to my needs.
