Comments about Audix VX5 Handheld Supercardioid Condenser Microphone:
This microphone will put a smile on your face when you hear it. It's like the musician is singing in your ears!! It is very natural sounding. You might have to boost the highs by a couple dB, but that's it. Articulate, airy, and wonderful. Response is very good up to 16kHz or so to give it that natural airy sound. I've used Shure SM58, Beta58, Beta87, Sennheiser 800 series mics on vocals. The VX5 blows them away. It might be slightly more articulate than a PR-35. The response it flatter than any other mic I've used. Could be good or bad depending on the type of music. For a thick mix, you may have to add some presense boost instead of high shelf. However, you always want to watch loud stages with a condenser microphone.
Comments about Audix VX5 Handheld Supercardioid Condenser Microphone:
I stand by my comments about the VX5's smooth, studio-like sound but need to amend my first review. The problem I found with this mic having to use it with the -10db & low rolloff to avoid distortion & extend SPL, is needing to turn up the channel gain nearly wide open to reach the volumes we need for some larger/noisy venues. As a result, there's not much headroom left. Just a limitation of our sound system. And the VX5 sounded like it was being pushed at the higher vols on our system.Conversely, my Sennheisers and PR22 don't distort easily (like the VX5 without the -10db & low rolloff), have plenty of gain and present no channel gain issues with lots of headroom. So since we can't afford another sound system right now, I'm sticking with the Senns and PR22, and returned the VX5. I could have kept it and used it for smaller, quieter venues but what's the point when my other mics can easily handle it all with our system. And truthfully, overall I prefer the Senns and Heil for my voice and our music. I was also concerned about the VX5's durability over time on the road. It seems a bit lightweight / fragile and I?ve read several complaints regarding Audix quality and the company?s failure to fix things.
Comments about Audix VX5 Handheld Supercardioid Condenser Microphone:
I'm lead singer for a 5-pc Irish/Celtic band and after 20+ years with my old beat up SM58 and lots of problems on stage (feedback, wash, and lackluster sound) I've been trying a bunch different mics for the past few months including OM2,3,5,6, Beta 58, Sennheiser e935, e945, e965, EV 767a, Heil PR20, 22, and 35. I ended up with the Senn e935, e945, and Heil PR22. Great mics that best fit my voice of the lot. Then a friend who owns a local music store who gave me the OMs to try said I really needed to try the VX5. I was skeptical but gave it a try and although it took a while to get used to, this is really a superb mic with studio sound characteristics. I use it with the both the -10db and low rolloff engaged to extend the SPL. The clarity, definition, accuracy, balance and smoothness are stellar. Wonderful high end. No sibilance issues, no handling noise, good GBF and I can really push it without distortion. With the -10db/low rolloff I can work the mic nicely, from right on top of it to a couple inches away. It?s amazing how much it can handle without compression. Not saying it?s the perfect mic for metal, but it suits our music perfectly. A joy to use with excellent cut in both mains and monitors.
Comments about Audix VX5 Handheld Supercardioid Condenser Microphone:
I was using the usual Shure SM58's which are in their field, the touring war horse. rugged & indestructible (almost), but not the clearest sound. I got a couple of these almost 2 years ago, and they have become my mic of choice. You can also see the review I wrote on Audix's website for more detail. I have been quite careful with them, so I don't know how rugged they are compared to the Shures. I have since purchased several others. I love the clarity and definition. You can really hear your voice - even in the monitors. Sounds like the paper bag has been lifted off the mic!
Comments about Audix VX5 Handheld Supercardioid Condenser Microphone:
I picked this up Dec 07 as a replacement upgrade for my beloved Audix OM5, which I lost at a gig (believe it or not, I eventually got that one back). It took a solid several months to feel my way around on this mic before I was completely comfortable with it, but in a word: Damn! The clarity and volume are absolutely remarkable. You don't have to scream or growl at full force to make it pick up your voice (unless you want to). Once you find its sweet spots this thing almost acts like its own compressor. Keep your mouth off it. Optimal distance is about 2" away.Am forced to give it an average rating on 'Features' because: A) How many features do you get (or need) on ANY mic? And B) If it slips down into your hand so you're cradling that bottom screen, feedback is about guaranteed. This is true whether you're holding it or gripping on a stand.Great piece of gear! They could easily charge 50 bucks more and it'd be well worth it.
