I gig and tour quite often, and I perform solo: I play electric guitar and sing while using synths and samplers running direct to PA.

Because I need to keep track of the samplers, I don't like having a guitar amp blaring behind me. Also, miking an amp results in a muddier sound when everything else is going through the PA.

I considered a number of options (modelers, etc) before I stumbled on this box. It's so cheap, and I know from experience that using a DI to play electric guitar into a PA results in great levels---but the tone is usually wretched. But I saw that this DI has a speaker cab emulation, so I checked out some YouTube vids and bought it from this website, because it's so cheap.

Wow. This box has changed my live rig! Now, I play my guitar into my distortion and delay pedals, then run it into the DI box with the cab switch engaged, which goes into the PA. It is SUCH a wonderful guitar tone!

Now, my setup and teardown times are drastically reduced, because I'm not fiddling with an amp. I can hear myself better on stage, because I can get whatever amount of guitar I want in the monitors, without having a loud amp blaring behind me.

There is no hiss, no noise, no loose connections. The unit is very tough metal.

I suggest running the unit with one of the pads engaged, and always with the speaker cab sim ON. If you're using this DI to record in the studio, then you can leave the cab sim off and just use whatever amp/cab sims you want on your DAW.

Hugely recommended!

it really works

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I come from a rock background, and only ever used DI boxes in the studio. Recently I've started playing gigs with DJs - yes gone over to the dark side! - as well as electro bands who use programmed sequences. Using a traditional amp-and-guitar setup in such situations is less than ideal I've found. The guitar just doesn't sit in the mix right that way. So I thought I'd try running direct through the PA so that all the channels could be mixed from the board. Yes you could do this by miking the amp but it crossed my mind that if i was just going to go through the PA that way I might as well give a DI box. So I shopped around, and bought this one because it was cheap. What a pleasant surprise, this thing sounds great and as other reviewers have mentioned, the cab sim is far better than any I've tried in regular multi-fx processors. I also have a Digitech RP1000 I can go direct to the board with, and get an infinite number of sounds with. I like it but it's a bit of a beast to and I find it's easier, and sounds better, just to run a small lineup of pedals in front of the UltraG. I'm getting really fat tones using this in combination with an MXR carbon copy analog delay, Route 66 comp/OD, and an RMC Picture Wah. I might add a Whammy and/or auto-wah to get more electro-compatible sounds soon. With this thing, my amps are just gathering dust now.

It works well...

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I have three of these things, and they work well. We use them in our church and small venues where amps would overload the room. Feedback and balance issues went away when we started using the DI Boxes. They have been in use for several years, with no problem. Battery life is very good. The cab simulation is probably not going to suit some, but again, I think it works well for what we do.

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

Works great. I got it, when it was a little cheaper. The amp simulator is a joke, but as an active direct box it works great. I totally disagree with the comment that using it instead of miking an amp is better. Any guitar amp with a mic, will always sound better than line-in. Clean, yes, it can sound great in-line, but as soon as you start using distortion and overdrive it sounds awful. I use it for an acoustic guitar most of the time, and it works great. I actually usually use the pad buttons to cut off the level, because my acoustic is active, and it seems a little too high of a level when it goes through the d-box.

    Already Blown Away

    By HighGain1000

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

This box with 4x12 cabinet simulation is a must have if you are tired of fooling around with mic placement. I run a BBE Boosta Grande into a Randall RH200 (Overdrive Channel), and use an MXR 10 band EQ with a Smart Gate in the effects loop. Then, I am running line out of the Randall into the ULTRA-G and then into my board. The 4x12 simulation kills all of that high end fuzz, and is near silent. I love the phantom power option, and I am trying to think of something bad to say about this but can't. Just learn to use the db padding as to not clip your signal, and then dial in more gain at the mixing console; you'll get it. There is no need to change the sound of your amp to accommodate the mixing board, this will do it for you!

    Disappointing Performance

    By Oldasdirt

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

The box inverts signal polarity. That alone makes it unacceptable for any serious use. The speaker sim sounds mediocre to me. That could possibly be improved with some EQ tweaking, but the polarity issue makes it a moot point.

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

So last night during sound check, my Epi Blues Custom 30 died. Luckily I had this thing with me. Ran out of my pedalboard into it, then XLR out to the board.BLEW my band's minds on how good it sounded. This coming from 2 high brow sound guys too.'So, I am not going to replace my amp with a big rig. Gonna to use a little practice amp for a reference monitor and use the DI for the house sound. Will pickup a backup too!

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

This thing works great. Used it direct outa my line out. You can A/B between the amp sim and really hear the difference. And it cheap. Built like a tank. I wish you didn't need batteries like the Palmer but I hooked up a universal 9volt and mounted it right in the amp. It lives up to it's intention. And I did not notice any noise. Handy little do-dad don't cha know.

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I purchased my Ultra-G direct box out of intrigue, and I'm glad I did. I am an experienced player, performing at some of the top night clubs in Columbus, OH with built in sound and experienced sound engineers. Every one of them has complimented the sound of the Ultra-G box, and at least two of them have decided to buy some of them based on hearing how good mine sounds. It's better than a mic in a live setting when used through a conventional line out, hands down. If you think otherwise, you must be using it incorrectly.

    1 year later, great results

    By Gibsonguy-FJyth

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I bought this primarily to use instead of a mic on my low wattage tube amp (blackheart little giant head). I was tired of running a mic and having to worry about placement, cables, etc.I run it straight into a mixing board, that feeds my computer. It sounds great on recordings- fairly transparent, and soudns even better with the speaker emulation.I also found a second use. I love the tone of my blackheart amp, but 5 watts wasn't enough for medium gigs. Now, I also use it live by running the signal out of the Ultra-G into the preamp-in on a crappier 60-watt tube amp. I use the 1x12" cabinet that gets fed directly by the amp for a monitor, and use the 60watt tube amp as the main sound source (or I could feed the house PA directly using the Ultra-G if I were so inclined). There are some slightly more transparent units out there, and if cost is no issue, feel free to use them. But this does a solid job for $40. Can't ask for too much more. I've had little to no hiss, and no reliability issues at all with pretty regular use over the past 13 months.

    Better than cheap mics

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I bought two of these and they blew me away. Most people had told me that this kind of DI would not replicate the amp's tone as good as a mic would, so I had low expectations. Our band plays loud and distorted, and the cab emulation sounds better than our expensive instrument mics. This is all a huge benefit when considering new mics, stands, cables, and space! We use an Ibanez Thermion and an Ibanez Tonepro, no pedals or effects.

    amp in a box!

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

This thing works great. Just as advertised. I tried mine out yesterday in a worst case scenario (inexperienced P.A. set up) And it performed perfectly. I had no issues with hum as others have stated. I would suspect that issue is in their signal chain (use the ground lift to check)I fed mine the signal straight from the pre-amp and it was whisper quiet. If you are feeding it from a power amp that may be your problem as well. The cab sim works great for overdrive & distortions but I could tell little difference in the clean signals. This thing is very transparent! The 2-20db pads are perfect for taming the signal! Build quality seems to be pretty good but I dont think I would want to drop it. (sent back the first one it had parts rattling around in it) I cant wait to try this on our own PA system and see how it performs. I may be eliminating my big 412cab and power amp! I am at this moment buying another one so I can run stereo! So easy to do without having to mic it up eh? R.I.P SM57? Every band should have a few of these kicking around just as back-ups if nothing else. Tip: to eliminate hum from your entire P.A. try to run all power to the board and power amps (guitars & basses as well) of the same circuit using power conditioners or use your ground lifts!

I need a reliable DI box as I don't like carting a big amp on stage (I use a small amp for stage volume only).
I have a board full of effects and this DI handles all of the changes and outs out exactly what goes in...

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I have owned 2 of these since they debuted, they perform flawlessly, I have used them both with the amp speaker output and with the line out, they were designed to give a musician an option on recording an amplifier or running it through a mixer in a live sound enviorment. the units are very quiet, the cabinet sim is very natural and believable, and the headaches they save by not having to mic your amp make using it a no brainer.
The emulation is on par with Hughes and Kettner and other cabinet sims costing a lot more. Great For vintage amps with no built in DI or cab sim, better sounding than most cab sims built into modern amps, no cross talk and no feedback, I will never mic my amp on stage again!

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

I am a Behringer snob, there I admit it! I use a ton of their stuff, and have only had 2 problems over a decade, and those were taken care of 100%.

So after saying that here is why this piece of gear only gets 4 stars, the 4x12 sim is VERY hissy! For folks that say it is not, place a distortion unit after this DI, turn it on, and listen...now turn on the cab sim, but watch your ears! I play mainly clean-hint of grit, and running a guitar straight into it, OR using a REAL guitar preamp (no a floor multi-effect) is just too noisy to record with.

After returning 2 new units I found one cheap on eBay and grabbed it...why? Because the Straight DI Function of this box is absolutely silent! Just like it's little bro, these Berry DI's are as quiet as any high end DI, and the most important part, it does NOT change your tone in any way.

They are NOT load boxes, so you WILL have to connect a speaker or Power Soak after it if you run your Amp Head into it, but using a variety of tube & solid state heads, ranging from 15watts up to 100watts, this thing transferred the tone with no problem. And in THIS type of situation the 4x12 sim does not sound bad at all.

Looking for a DI? Grab the cheaper Berry one like this. Need a speaker sim? I would say look elsewhere, sorry Berry....

Comments about Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI:

You have several options when not using a standard guitar amp. My particular use-case was that I wanted to plug into a computer interface, not have a shrill and weak sound while using distortion, and be able to record without having to crank my amp to maximum settings to get a good tone.

If you try to use a distortion or other boost directly into the computer, you will probably get a shrill, high-frequency saturated sound; essentially you need a real guitar speaker to attenuate certain frequencies and give you that "balls," thick sound. This DI box was the solution for me.

You can achieve a similar result with several "pod" like devices on the market, but I prefer using discrete pedals of my choosing, which isn't always easy or possible with multi effects units. With this, I can just run my typical setup to the unit instead of a regular amp, and still have a great sound.

My main need was the cab sim and not the general DI functionality, but I can tell a major difference now when using a distortion pedal directly into the computer.

It still isn't the same as miking an amp, but I feel it gives me a lot more versatility in my home studio, and I'm quite happy recording guitar tracks with this. Prior to using this device, I would scrap any guitar track I recorded that was not a miked amp. I now feel that I can get an album quality recording (yet still indy, not necessarily polished) with no amp.

It can also be used to just plug into your band's PA system, but I haven't experimented with that so I can't comment. I am confident, however, that it would work just fine in that application. This would also be a great item for a keyboard player needing to plug into a house PA.

The build quality on the outside seems excellent. The four rubber legs also help setting the unit down without slamming it.

I'm very happy with the purchase, and with this price, you can't go wrong.

One of my steady gigs is with a church band where we do not use amps and plug directly into the house system (not my favorite way of playing). I play a Peavey T-60 I've had for years through some basic effects and it just wasn't cutting it. I was ready to invest in the Line 6 PodXTLive when I remembered I had bought this box some months back and never got around to trying it. I took it too a rehearsal and switched on the 4x12 cab feature. The sound engineer said it was like I was playing through a Marshall without the Marshall. The rest of the band agreed. I'm very happy.
