OVERVIEW

18-input digital rackmount mixer for iPad and Android tablets.

The revolutionary XR18 is a powerhouse 18 input/12 bus portable/rack-mountable mixer for iPad and Android tablets, and is ideally suited for both live and studio applications, thanks to its 16 award-winning MIDAS-designed mic preamps, convenient integrated Wi-Fi module for wireless control, plus USB connectivity for file storage, system updates and uncompressed stereo recordings via the USB Stereo Recorder. There are also rack ears and protective bumpers included for added flexibility in your studio and stage applications. The freedom to move around and manipulate all parameters of your mix with the free iOS and PC apps lets you dial in the perfect sound from anywhere in the venue “ or the tracking room.

MIDAS “ The Legend in Sound Quality
Ever since its formation in the 1970s, MIDAS has had a long history of innovation and leadership in the world of audio mixing consoles. Employed by the most famous touring acts and installations worldwide, legendary MIDAS consoles such as the XL4 and Heritage H3000 quickly became industry standards.

MIDAS has earned their impeccable reputation due to their no-compromise approach for audio and build quality and in particular for their Award-winning Mic Preamps which are considered by industry experts as the industry™s best sounding designs. Building on this legacy, the XR18 and PRO Series of Live Mixing Systems continue this great heritage of Award-winning audio quality.

Built-In Tri-Mode Wi-Fi Router
Designed for the ultimate in mobility, the XR18 comes with an integrated Wi-Fi module for direct control of your mixer™s functions “ without the need to setup and configure an external router. The XR18 gives you the freedom to focus on your mix, while allowing you to move about the venue to experience what every part of the audience is hearing. Plus you can adjust live monitor wedges from the artist™s perspective “ or better yet, let them mix their own IEMs and floor monitors via their own tablets.

USB Connectivity and Stereo Recording
The front panel USB type-A connector makes the XR18 not only an amazingly powerful digital mixing solution, but also allows recording your live stereo tracks directly to attached USB flash media or hard drives. Dial in the perfect live mix with effects and zero-latency, while sending a dedicated stereo mix to your thumb drive for recording, or play background music in a break.

Revolutionary Auto-Mixing
When your application calls for a multiple-microphone setup, such as an onstage panel discussion, press conference or courtroom proceeding, etc., it can become a challenge to maintain so many open mics “ and preserve maximum gain and priority for the moderator.

Behringer's X AIR Gain Sharing technology can easily manage fully automated mixes with several live microphones. Based on the legendary Dan Dugan automix system, the XR18™s gain sharing paradigm automatically controls the levels of all selected microphones in real time, without any gating artifacts or noise modulation.

This function dramatically reduces the typical feedback, studio noise and comb filtering challenges that can occur when two, or more mics are in close proximity of each another. X AIR Gain Sharing technology provides a consistent system gain structure, even when multiple speakers are talking at the same time.

4 Onboard X32 Effects Engines
Equipped with the very same FX engines as the X32 Digital Mixing Console, the onboard virtual FX Rack provides access to four true-stereo (8 mono), multi-effects processors including delay, chorus, dynamics “ plus the XR18 can run production-quality, true-stereo reverbs concurrently with 31-band EQ on the main and aux buses, all without the need for any additional hardware.

You can select any combination of high-end simulations of legendary studio effects, such as the Lexicon 480L and PCM70, as well as the EMT250 and Quantec QRS reverbs. Onboard processing means your computer doesn™t have to do the heavy lifting during a mixing session with DAW plugins as the XR18 has a whole studio of FX under its hood.

Custom-designed, and physically modeled after some of the most iconic and sought after processors, all effects run inside the low-latency environment of the X32 mix engine, ensuring flawless performance, flexible routing and the end of cable faults forever.

High-End FX Racks at Your Finger Tips
The XR18 incorporates a vast collection of high-end FX racks available at a moment's notice. These effects emulate some of the most popular and sought after audio-processing effects coveted by top mixing engineers around the world. Choose from over 20 effects each fully capable performers in both live and studio environments.

100-Band RTA for all Channel/ Bus EQ™s
The XR18 includes a high-resolution 100-band Real Time Analyzer (RTA), with full Bar and Spectrograph views. This high-resolution RTA displays the audio energy distribution in 100 frequency bands over time “ capturing a sonogram window of a full 10 seconds.

Switch between the Large RTA view, displaying any available signal in full screen resolution, or the Combined RTA view shown above each of the channel and bus EQ curves “ and see the results of your filtering choices. Additionally, the RTA can be displayed on top of the 31-band graphic EQs in the Main LR or Aux buses.

Uncompromised Channel Processing
The XR18 allows you to achieve the same incredible level of EQ finesse as the award-winning X32 thanks to its 100-band Real Time Analyzer, which is built into every input channel and bus EQ. Visual feedback built into the control app allows you to see and make fast, surgical adjustments to frequencies in need of a boost or a cut.

Every input channel also features Low-Cut, 4-band fully parametric EQ and the same Gate and Compressor dynamics suite found in the X32 “ with one very special addition; you can choose either Expert or Simple functionality. In Expert mode, you can drill down and get your hands on every nuance of your dynamics. Or, if you'e more of the plug-and-play type, Simple mode lets you either select from one of 4 carefully optimized presets “ or load your own channel templates. Add to this 40-Bit, floating-point DSP and you'll experience virtually "unlimited" dynamic range with no internal overload and near-zero overall latency.

In addition to the Main L/R bus for Front of House, 6 Aux buses are provided for dialing in the perfect monitor mixes, or creating a dedicated mix for your USB stereo recording “ complete with inserts, dynamics, and either a 6-band parametric EQ or 31-band graphic EQ. And if all these outstanding EQ options put a smile on your face, you™ll love it even more when we tell you that 100-band RTAs are available for these, too!

MIDI In/Out for Live Performance Controllers
The physical MIDI I/O port on the XR18 mixer can also be used for connecting external MIDI controllers, such as our X-TOUCH or B-CONTROL products, for dynamically controlling channel level, muting and panorama adjustments during your performance. And since the full-featured XR18 also supports the Mackie Control protocol, you easily apply comprehensive remote editing and parameter adjustments via any compatible MIDI devices.

X AIR EDIT (PC/Mac/Linux)
If your application requires a computer for BEHRINGER X AIR mixer remote control, the X AIR EDIT was made just for you. Simply copy and launch the free software with your computer, connect to the mixer via its built-in Ethernet (LAN) connector using a Cat 5 cable (max. 100 m length) “ and all X AIR mixer functions are instantly mirrored on your computer screen. Since your PC screen is larger than the one on your telephone, X AIR EDIT allows you to open and scale more app windows, such as for routing or FX editing “ letting you decide how much information you need at a glance. All touch screens are supported, or you can use a mouse to adjust your physical mixer™s settings. You can even control multiple mixers remotely from a single computer, or create several strategically placed computer stations to control the same mixer. With X AIR EDIT, your PC, Linux or Mac computer becomes your virtual mixer “ both live and in the studio!

X AIR for iPad
Front of House is wherever you and your iPad are “ thanks to the new X AIR app for iPad. Simply download the free app to your iPad, set the BEHRINGER X AIR mixer to Access Point mode and connect your iPad to the XR18 network that will show up. After launching the X AIR app, select the mixer image, and all of your X AIR mixer™s settings can now be adjusted directly from your iPad. You can save your favorite scenes, and load previously stored scenes and presets to/from your iPad or customize your channel layout “ all with the support of innovative drag ™n™ drop functionality.

Download the free X AIR App for iPad from the Apple App Store.

X AIR for Android
Designed specifically for all Android mobile devices (2.2 or higher), which includes tablets and smartphones, the app can be used in one of two modes: full access mixing mode; or bound to a specific aux bus for creating personal monitor mixes remotely on BEHRINGER X AIR mixers. Using this free and easy to learn app, each performer can use their Android device to dial-in the perfect personal IEM or wedge monitor mix, without having to consult the audio engineer for assistance. With the X AIR MIX App for Android, personal monitor mixing just got a whole lot more personal “ both live and in the studio! But it doesn™t stop there “ in full access mixing mode, the app provides control over all channel processing including the RTA overlay, effects editing, storing/loading scenes or presets, and much more “ whether you'e running a 12" tablet or a 5" smartphone.

If you are new to digital mixing there is a learning curve!

This thing sounds great, and is equivalent to a good 16 channel mixer and a couple of racks of processing gear, since you have gates, effects, EQ and compression on each channel. Once you learn how it works it's a real treat! The RTA view in the EQ window is really nice, a friend plays violin, plugging into a DI and then into an analog mixer never sounds good. THE RTA shows a large high frequency bump that was really easy to EQ out.

I usually use a PC laptop and an android tablet to control the sound. IMO, currently the android app is better than the iPad app. I do all of my setup with the PC and usually use it FOH, the android tablet is usually used on stage for monitors.

Now for the issue, the built-in wifi is not reliable, it generally works OK in a non-congested area, but once a lot of people with cell phones are around it's iffy at best, even in close range. I'm using a cheap D-Link AC router and with it have had zero connectivity issues. I have a 100 ft cat6 cable for my new snake.
I would easily give it 5 stars if the built-in wifi worked better.

I've used Presonus 16.4.2's and Mackie DL1608's ... I think the xr-18 is better.

No Phone Support.

Software would not work with laptop(s) . Got funky error messages. Attached photo looks like corrupt software or whatever. Yes I reinstalled many times and got same looking error message. Just gave up after hours of trying to get it to work with Wifi.

Software and devices I tried;

Windows 8 and Windows 10 Operating systems on 2 different very current laptops and 2 different newer TP-Link dual band routers.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

This XR 18 is a great investment. I'm doing at least 3 gigs a week and this little box will save me from use a bigger format mixer. The quality on each channel pre is awesome. I use most of my eqs flat and just cut some problematic freq. I was surprise with the quality of the final mix. I run the android app, the iPad app and the PC app. Love them. No issues at all so far. Now, if you want to dial a good sound, get early to the gig.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

Assuming you have an overall working understanding of signal path, live sound, and GUI experience, this mixer is incredible in sound quality and signal processing.
Using EV powered mains and Alto powered monitors, I used this mixer for my 5 pc classic rock band at an out door show, having never used the mixer before and building all buss mixes from scratch, and it performed perfectly, with minimal eq tweaking. I spent a few hours before the show familiarizing myself with the interface, and I was able to access most of the tools I needed on the fly with only that small amount of prep.
Aside from all the processing power, the really amazing thing about this mixer is the sound quality of the preamp and outputs: "phenomenal" is not hyperbole in this case.
I connected via cat5 and have not used the built in wi fi; based on reviews, I plan to use and outboard router.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

Review based on the price/quality/features of the xr18, and nothing else.

This is by far one of the best mixing consoles you can buy for under 600. Don't let the naysayers discourage you from buying Behringer X-series products. They've stepped-up their game. A lot of F.O.H. guys will tell you any and everything to discourage you from using x-series products (Trust me, I used to hate Behringer too), don't let that sway your decision.

I travel with this rig on small tours and it has held up just fine (in a ata rack). There's another one that I use for church services. The sound quality is great! They have yet to fail on us.

The ONLY issue I have with this is the built-in router. It seems to have connectivity issues with tablets every so often (I've tested with multiple tablets). BUT It hardly ever loses connectivity with laptops.
There is an easy fix to this though... Just use your own router.. Plug it into the Ethernet port, and setup a private network (so no other devices will try to connect). Just like you would with your home WiFi.

If you're hesitant on this, just think.. you can use this as your snake and it's also your mixing console.. and it sounds great.. and it's cheap.. and it's easy to use (minus the the *optional* internal channel routing features, but if you're tech savvy, you can figure it out. This is not something you have to use.)

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I got involved in the band/sound business in high school using mixers like the Yamaha 2404 and such. Eventually moved up to nicer consoles, and even dedicated monitor mixes, but the mixers were all essentially the same. They were big, and only less big than the racks of compressors, eqs, effects, analyzers, you had to lug around. Now, in something about the size of a shoe box, you can not only replace all that, but do more. Compressors/gates for every channel. Multiple monitor sends that each artists can customize with their phone. No need to carry around 100 feet of bulky snake cable. Midas preamps. And, to top it off, you can send individual channel outputs to a laptop for a multichannel mix. The ability to mix from anywhere. For me, the shock and awe of modern mixing technology never fades.

I've got two of the XR18 and one QSC Touchmix. Both are great, but the XR18 is easier on the pocketbook. The QSC has a surface, however, which still provides some level of comfort for an old schooler. If you can't sync with the XR18 for some reason, you are out ... period. Never had the problem, but I'm always prepared to hardwire in with a laptop. I always run an independent wifi system too (just build it into the rack, you'll be glad you did).

Mastering the device may take some time, but it is fairly intuitive. The interfaces of the Android/iOS are different. I like the look of the iOS better, but most feel the Android devices stay connected better and have less latency. The best is a laptop, but it's not as elegant a form factor.

I've never had any problems with it, but knock on wood. As an MS platform user, I've evolved to expect software crashes, and crashes at the worst times. This adds a bit of uneasiness. Others may speak to that better than I, as I am not a frequent user. I use it mainly nowadays for practice sessions, churches, and jams. If I played l live, I would use it without hesitation, and once again be shocked by its power.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I tried the XR16 and then the XR18. XR18 adds so much to XR12/16s, and truly is a mini X32 at a fraction of the price.

This is my first digital mixer and the learning curve was shorter than I thought, thanks to videos posted by Behringer. Also see the series by MusiciansPro on youtube.

The user interface is stellar and super responsive and you can see controls move across parallel deivces when updated on one.

I love the ability to do up to 16 track recording, and you get a free download of Tracktion (DAW) software with the purchase as well. With little fiddling, we were able to configure a skype session with USB running through the PC. Possibly the cheapest mixer for live webcasting as well.

Only thing I wish was the ability to record wireless directly to a pen drive like you can on the XR12/16, when you don't need multi-track recording..

Wonderful buy and great customer service from MF..

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

The band I run FOH for purchased this amazing box last year and I've been amazed at the sound quality and how easy the mix comes together. The Midas pres sound incredible -- especially with the LA2A (Leisure comp) inserted on the lead vocals. The verbs sound great. The EQs sound amazing -- when you use the VEQ (vintage EQ) for the inputs and the TruEQ on the outputs. To ensure top performance, make sure you initialize and update the firmware -- as well as keeping all control software up to date.

Since this thing sounds so hi-fi, it will reveal a sub-par PA/monitoring system quickly. The only way this thing won't sound good is if you're using sub par PA/monitoring equipment and microphones. I've experienced warm and lush lows, present, but not too overbearing mids, and airy highs. The mix depth, stereo width, and dynamic height are amazing -- and walks toe to toe with the big boys. I have not heard a more natural and transparent sounding mixer -- what goes in is what comes out -- unless you want some dirt... and it'll do that as well with the FX engine.

On paper this unit sounds like a godsend considering the price, weight reduction, and how many pieces of gear it replaces. I received my unit and the construction/build quality was very nice - better than most Behringer products. The X18 AIR ap was very user friendly, and after watching a few Youtube Videos I felt that I had a good solid understanding of the ap itself. Ironically, the one thing most people complain about on these units (WIFI Connectivity) worked very well for us and we had no issues connecting multiple devices without an add on router.

Putting the unit into use was another story. During both practices and gigs, we encountered major problems with feedback on the X18. I have ran other analog systems and have never had to notch out more than one or two frequencies in the mains or monitors to kill feedback - and I do know how to configure a PA (Mic placement, cab placement, input gain, etc...) With the X18, we have to kill anywhere from 7-15 frequencies in the mains, and 6-8 in the monitors just to keep the system from squealing. Doing this obviously makes the system sound terrible. Another big disappointment is the channel EQ section. There is no option for a "simple" rotary or vintage style EQ. You only have a parametric EQ available, which the center frequency can get "bumped" side to side when you are trying to make quick adjustments on the fly in the heat of a gig. There is nothing to "lock" the frequency in place.

I called Behringer's support lines, watched numerous demo videos, and consulted online forums, etc... and still couldn't use the X18 in a gig situation without embarrassing results. It's unfortunate, because the idea behind the unit and the possible benefits sounded remarkable. However, implementing the unit just did not work well for us.

Comments about X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I bought this mixer with the idea that my band could run our own sound without the need of a sound guy. I wanted something relatively easy to understand and could be controlled remotely if needed. This mixer has lived up it's expectations and has gone beyond.

The only issue I have with it was the WiFi implementation. Many of the reviews shared these complaints, so I was prepared for it. I also purchased a Comfast WiFi repeater and it works perfectly to create a network for the mixer where multiple devices can control the mixer simultaneously. Each band member now has control over their own monitor mix without having to invest a large sum of money into the expensive monitor network devices sold by Behringer (Although, that is the eventual plan).

Overall this product is one of the best products Behringer has ever come out with. Behringer is certainly not the low quality stuff they used to be.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I handle the PA for several bands - highly diverse. I used to carry a large mixing console and a rack with 2 four-channel compressors, graphic EQ, and Lexicon effects. This mixer replaced all of that, and I don't even need a snake anymore because I sit the mixer near the front of the stage. I created presets (snapshots) for each band, and then as I EQ'd for particular rooms I'd save that as another snapshot (e.g. Band 1 at the Roadhouse). Now setup is unbelievably quick and sometimes I barely need to tweak things at all. I still carry a small Mackie mixer as an emergency backup but am considering buying another XR18 instead, although I'll probably wait to see the next version.

I use it for full band shows. I am a sound engineer and work with a lot of different bands so saving scenes saves set up time. There is a series of tutorials on Youtube which was extremely helpful and even though this is my first digital mixer I was as comfortable with it as my old analog mixer. My only disappointment was that a USB cable didn't come with it for recording but I had one from my old audio interface so I was able to record with it.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

Tones of features, found in expensive mixers packed into small but solid yet affordable enclosure. The noise levels are surprisingly low, the quality of built-in DSP is very good. Midas preamps sound nice. The provided apps looks different on different platforms but it is easy to get grasp of it even without the manual. There is ethernet link too, so when performing live and in need of superior connection reliability you can hook up your laptop by wire. You can still use the tablet to wander around the room and mix from there. There are 6 AUX channels completely configurable in various pre and post modes so you can hook up some external fx or monitoring channels. There is a special app for monitor mixes so the musicians can adjust theirs monitor mix themselves while on scene. For ringing out the foh/mon there are 31-band GEQ along with spectrum analyzer so you can catch and eliminate the feedback frequencies easily. And last but not least - there is a Linux app so you can worry less about you computer hanging during the show :) Even if it happens the mixer will still work and retain the settings.

How don't I use this product would leave me with nothing to say. I set out to replace my keyboard rack mixer with something I could replace my 4 in/2 out A/D converter and the ability to handle at least 4 live stereo synths. This fit in perfectly with 18 in/18 out for recording, at minimal, 9 stereo inputs for 1/4" (minus one of those for my VST sends, but I used to eat an analog stereo pair on my old for the A/D converter) since the XLR are the universal type. Each channel has its own eq, compression, and noise gate and you have 4 busses to work with for additional effects I haven't even needed to experiment with yet.
I completely do not regret upgrading to this for my keyboard mixer.

Technology is a great thing but when it takes so much time to learn how to use a new product while trying to play live shows that is not a great thing. This unit is great if you have months of down time to learn it's every move. I will be returning mine and going with a standard board because in the end that is what I know and what is going to be best suited for my needs.

Good sound and everyone in the band went from 2 floor wedges to 6 in-ear monitors with this system, which is great! BUT, we've only experienced connectivity issues since day 1. We lose connection in the middle of a set and can't get back on to control the mix. At least the sound doesn't cut off and on. We tried connecting through the "Client WIFI" option to no avail with our venues strong Wifi connection and the manual instructions and YouTube videos are lacking in that how-to explanation. We're missing something. Hooking all the hardware/wires up was a snap but you gotta be a lot smarter than me to run this thing, maybe? I'm going to have to hire some IT/tech people to get it to its top effectiveness.

So far the XR 18 has been my favorite purchase in quite some time. The X Air Edit app and Q app are easy to understand and the mixer it's self has replaced a full rack of older equipment, that I'm planning to sell.
The T6 recording software by Traction has been difficult to obtain (License error). And they are slow to email back, but I'm sure that once I work through the process ,that the recording aspect of the XR 18 will be just as delightful as the mixing. What an awesome piece of equipment!!

This mixer is compact and easy to travel with. After getting some wifi drop outs (that I have read about in reviews), I am adding an external router as suggested by Behringer and many other people. Set up is very easy. Lots of videos and help out there to get me going. The Android app easily controls this mixer in a fairly intuitive way.
