Been through a few phones over my 30 years recording, so after using AKGs 240s fortracking, I found mixes done with them were not good. SO, I bought some Audio Technica ah-50s. Much better and accurate than the akgs. That being said, after using some Beyer DT 770 at a friend's studio and hearing detai I missed with the ATH M-50 ATs, I had to spring for the [$]. Beyers. They are worth the extra coin for critical mixing.I don't use speakers to record or mix at home because of the noise. I do have older Yamaha NS 10m and Tanoy NFM 8s but I feel good about phones and my mixes seem to hold up in the car and other systems with the Beyers, or the ATs for that matter, Screw the guys that say you can't mix on phones.

I've had these headphones for 6 months now. I love(d) them to death. I babied these as I do with all my equipment. One day in the studio I was listening through a signal processor, plugged the headphones into my computer and my right channel was gone. I spent about a half hour trouble shooting everything in the signal path before checking the headphones. I have an electronics background so I decided to open them up, hoping it was only a bad solder joint or a partial short somewhere. It wasn't, the speaker was the issue. After checking with an oscilloscope I found that it was still reproducing sound, just severely attenuated. These are junk now for anyone who isn't deaf in their right ear. It's a shame because the sound and comfort is incredible. Buy the extended warranty if you still want to buy these. That way when to die on you, you can purchase something else and only be out $20.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

Have been a headphone fanatic since my first exposure to a pair of on-ear Senns some 30 years ago. I've had all types of headphones since then, but still keep reaching for the over-ear models.

The earpads on these headphones are cavernous, huge and deep. I find that very comfortable.

These phones also have deep bass that my ATH-M50 and VSIO HP-50 do not have. They won't add bass, but if it's there you will hear it. I do not have a studio, or a mixer, just frequent at home listening, so I can't say either way if they are suitable for "pro" listening. But they excel for me, especially because of the excellent low-frequency response.

I purchased the phones used from Musician's Friend, and within a few months noticed a defect in the right driver. I called Musinian's Friend, and even thugh the used warranty was expired Musician's Friend took care of me by exchanging them at no cost. I also bought the extended warranty, something I don't usually do. But I'm glad i did, after reading from others that they too have had similar problems.

The bottom line is these phones ROCK when listening to blues, jazz, classic rock. Musician's Friend took care of me after the warranty was expired. They are now first on my list when I start looking for home audio equipment. Excellent product, outstanding customer service, what's not to like?

      Thanks to Musician's Friend.

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

(I am an electronics and AV professional BTW) These are amazing headphones. Extremely comfortable, excellent acoustical isolation, very smooth response, pleasant sounding. As with most headphones, the response will change slightly with age, partly due to the ear cushions becoming a bit less springy and more compressed and very slightly as a result of mechanical wear of the plastic diaphragms over many years. I would recommend these headphones, definitely. The only possible disadvantage I see is, at 80 Ohms, the impedance is high enough that many headphone amplifiers will not have sufficient voltage swing to produce high volumes. The average media player, for example, may not deliver enough power at 80 Ohms for some listeners. Hopefully, this will not be an issue for people with young ears. :-) Enjoy!

Great sounding headphones. They sound good without masking or hiding the true content of the recording. I plan on using these as a "reference" to what I'm mixing along with DT250 -80ohm and reference speakers.

      Review of DT 770 Pro-80's

      By DJ Culver

      from Wisconsin

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

Although the size and weight can be a little cumbersome, the clarity of the sound priduced is excellent. They tend to get "heavy" on the ears after prolonged use.
I own a pair of Bose QE-15 as well as these headphones. These are the best closed studio's I have owned. The sound is studio perfect and has almost the clarity of my Bose QT-15 noise cancelling headphones, but with closed headphone ability. I would not hesitate to reccommend these to any studio geek who wants to "hear" what he plays
The DT 779 Pro-80 Closed studio headphones are a steal for the price offered!

      Really like these headphones

      By IceFire Music

      from Kansas City

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

Many reviewers have mentioned the comfort--excellent. Many reviewers have either noted or denited the extended bass response. I'll be honest: I'm not sure if they're flat or not--but they sure *sound* great. If they are bass-heavy (and consequently your mixes are bass-light) then, like with any reference monitors, you need to learn to "adjust" accordingly. Don't use them exclusively to mix (use reference monitors too) but use them for "nuance"--things that people who wear headphones to *listen* to music will hear that people who only listen to music over restaurant/elevator speakers will *never* hear anyway. The two pairs (80 ohm) I've used in my project studio for the last 3 years have never given me *any* mechanical problems.

      Another Defective DT770 Out $200!

      By GtrSmitty

      from Austin, TX

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

Either buy something else or buy the warranty. The right speaker is dead. This is the second pair of DT770s that has had this exact same problem (the right ear speaker is over attenuated and has static, then dies eventually). Apparently there are others out there that have had the same problem. It doesn't matter how good these sound if one day they are broken. Buyer beware!

      Incredible sound!

      By Val Sam

      from Vancouver, WA

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

I am in love with the sound that they produce. When I got the new pair I simply let them play some loud music to a pillow for 100 hours and then listened to them again. It made a big difference! Much better sound. So do not forget to break them in before coming to any conclusions. I listen mostly to classical SACDs, some good quality rock like Radiohead, Nick Cave. Jazz is my next thing. Classic rock sometimes: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin. But I would assume that if there is too much bass - it is definitely your CD that is recorded by a weird sound engineer. Now, the quality is not the same as it was 10 years ago. I used to have an older model and it was built a little bit better. The picture on this website is actually a picture of an that older model. The real thing that you will get is different. Go to the Beyerdynamic website to see it. It is cheaper looking to my opinion. Sound is the same though, and that I like. What is really bugging me is that tiny wire that connects right phone to the left. It is inside of the sleeve and it is can be really close to the moving parts. It can be damaged while you are adjusting the headphones size. These metal parts are sharp and they might actually cut the wire. Make sure that you open the sleeve and re-run the wire as far away from the moving parts as possible.Another thing is the annoying popping sound that they make sometimes when you put them on. Again, these metal pieces inside of the sleeve are rubbing against the metal frame. This problem had always been there even 10 years ago. I used to work at a radio station so I had to put the headphones on and take them off about 100 times per day, so I stopped noticing these clicks. Now I listen in order to get some musical nirvana, so that problem bugs me again. But don't listen to me too much, I am a perfectionist. It is simply impossible to completely satisfy me. Get these headphones if you care about good sound. These are one of the best. I like the fact that they are made in Germany.

not the right one for vocal monitoring

Comments about Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO-80 Closed Studio Headphones:

This pair is good for mixing but absolutely not for vocal monitoring. It compresses your vocal as if you're singing in a can. It has good isolation. Senheiser hd280 or sony 7506 are much better for vocal monitoring.
