OVERVIEW

Hear what you need to hear clearly without ear-damaging levels or outside distractions.

The Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones are used by super-star artists Terry Bozzio, Shawn Drover of Megadeth, and preferred by the world famous Blue Man group. Ideal for many listening environments; the EX-29s allow drummers to record œlive drums alongside a mixer, studio musicians to hear their cue mix above the instruments, front of the house engineers to monitor with comfort throughout live performances, engineers to utilize them for mic placement, and one ear isolation allows DJs to listen to both CDs and speakers for pure beat mixing. Many features make the Direct Sound EX-29 sound isolation headphones so extreme. The earmuffs are specially designed to reduce ambient sound by an average of 28 decibels while the custom-fitted speaker assembly is designed to guard your eardrums and enhance your performing and recording experience.Exceptionally true sound is provided through advanced an-isotropic magnet drivers and a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme headphones fold for ease of storage and portability, and offer the convenience of dual behind-the-ear cords to avoid interfering with your instruments and performance. Not only for drummers, the Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones are ideal for stage and studio musicians, sound engineers, project studios, or simply quiet listening at home.

I use this to play my drums with my iPod. This was bought to replace using a combination of iPod earbuds and over-the-ear sound dampening earphones which was NOT comfortable but allowed the perfect mix of iPod music to drums without killing my ears. These EX-29's sound WAY better than the earbuds and are WAY more comfortable, however they do not lower the volume of the drums as much. From all my research, the EX-29's are the best product out there for my application, however I wish they made some that had a higher decible reduction. Also, if you move your head while wearing them, they tend to let in alot more noise presumabely because the seal is broken around the ear... I find it a challenge to hold my head still while drumming! Overall I am pleased and WOULD buy them again, and would upgrade to higher decible reduction if they made them.

I use these for live shows\pracitce and find them to do the trick. Expecially helpful when stage monitor mix just doesn't cut it. Sound isolation is good...sometimes too extreme....but if you play hard rock]metal or any extremly loud music, they will do great.

However....i find the contruction cheezy. Lots of plastic...and sort of flimbsy. In fact...be just a little rough with them...and the they break loose from the headphones.
In terms of the sound quality, disappointed with the lack of kick or low end that can be pushed though these. (or just maybe i'm just deaf now ...so i have to turn everything up louder than most bandmembers....prob not MY pair of Sony MDR's sound TONS BETTER and are MUCH MORE DURABLE...and yes i would use them..but the isoation is not strong enough..

The cord is also kind of cheesy...i'm waiting for it to break anyday....(i've had these for a couple of years...and have used them at least a hundred times.)

Bottom line: They serve me well... But I'd expect more considering the price

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I think these headphones are great, especially now that the headband is invincible.
I have spoken with Direct Sound (manufacturer) and their headphones are now made with an Incrediflex headband - they will NOT break. You can bend them every which way and there is no destroying these things. They have video demonstrating it on YouTube - Look up 'ExtremeIsoHeadphones' Channel.

They are also now made 100% in America.

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

Blocks outside noise rather well. Pretty comfortable. I've only owned it for a week but everything seems durable.
Some how it increases the volume from my lap top. A problem I have always had with lap tops and cheap audio caqrds is low volume output, these things are much louder, and now I set my computer's volume level to 50% or else everything is too loud. So I love the volume these things kick out.
The speakers can kick out more volume than my ears feel comfortable listening to, without a bit of distortion. So if you like listening to your music loud, you'll love how well these head phones deliver sound.

      Great Customer Service!!!

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I have a pair of the EX-29's, and they have been great! They really are backed by the best customer service. Once, I had to call for a replacement part and I was able to talk to the owner/inventor immediately and he sent the part out the same day. It was a two second fix, no tools needed, which is perfect for me. I wouldn't trade these for the world, the isolation is far superior to any headphone out there.

      Awesome Company

      By Pedro Vazquez

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

The isolation is great. You still hear the sound from your instrument, specially if you are playing drums, but you just play the music through your headphones and you don't need to raise the volume to insane volumes to hear the music and the instrument. I use it to record drums. The company is great, I had the part going over the head broken, I sent them an email and they sent me a new part which I received 3 days later. All parts are replasable so if anything happens to it you don't need to buy a new heaphone. Excellent!

      EX-29's

      By Ollie Bates

      from Ohio

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I bought EX-29's for my 13 year old jazz/rock drummer son on the recommendation of his teacher who is a performing jazz drummer. Being a drummer myself I gave them a try. Very good isolation and even my husband thought the sound quality was very good for just "listening". They are a little light and we'll see how well they hold up. We all thought they were very comfortable and a great buy! At this point I would buy them again when on sale!

I felt I could hear the mix, and get the isolation I needed. After a while, I would forget I was wearing them. The headphones worked out well, did their job!

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I read all the older reviews from years ago - It seems that there was a manufacturing defect for a few months, but as soon as they realized it they offered a free replacement with a much sturdier headband. They will replace those broken headbands without question, for free, for anyone who was unfortunate to get one. I love my Extreme Isolation headphones, and I am happy to give my business to someone who stands behind their product.

I used to be a KLH 141 guy in the studio, loved the isolation, sound quality and durability, then the price went up and the quality went down. I see a lot of engineers using Sonys in the studio, but they sound awful and fall apart so easily. When I found the Direct Sound EX-29s I was very happy, they sound great, give great isolation, put up with punishment and they are very comfortable.

I wear them on airplanes to save my ears with the 29dB of noise reduction, and they are comfortable enough where I can keep them on for a long flight and forget I'm wearing them.

I still have my original pair of EX-25s, the lighter pair, they are that durable, unlike the Sonys that might fall apart if you stare at them too long.

Of course what really sold me on them was the exceptional sound quality. The quality holds up to headphones that are two or three times the price.

I am also a "buy American" kind of guy when possible, and these are made by a couple of guys in Missouri who I always see at AES conventions. They go to other shows too, so you can meet them, chat with them. They are really nice guys and dedicated to producing a quality product.

These headphones get my top rating, both for studio and personal use.

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

My five year old EX-29 headphones broke the afternoon of June 13, 2013. Since I use these phones nearly everyday, I called Direct Sound and learned that these headphones, at that time made (2008) in Asia were actually defective. Within 24 hours the company had an updated head band (now made in the USA) sent to me without charge via Priority Mail. I call that exceptional service.

While I was at one time active in the recording studios in Nashville, I now use the headphones to suppress the sound of a grand piano, or the vacuum cleaner, or the heat pump in the room where I listen to CDs and DVDs on my portable players. I get suppression nearly equal to that which I get with my top of the line Silencio and RCBS hearing protection muffs designed for the shooting range. The EX-29 headphones are very comfortable to wear over my rather large ears, and the pads seal very well over the stems of my eyeglasses.

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

For drummers these are great, good isolation and really good sound even at high levels.
As far as features go you have a set of headphones with 1/4" TRS adaptable to 1/8" TRS. Also the ycome in a purple crown royal-ish bag which is a nice touch.
Quality seems great. No problems yet.
They are a bit pricey but I am more than willing to pay for a product that is made in USA!!!!!! Which these are.

              a high-quality product

              By Josh Mitteldorf

              from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I've used these daily for 5 years now. The drivers are highly efficient, and produce a lot of sound at modest power levels. Sound quality is impeccable. I use them at home for cutting out ambient noise, and take them with me in the car, on trains and airplanes. On trains and planes, I sometimes wear them just for peace and ear protection, without playing music. They're solidly built and durable. Every 2-3 years when the ear pads begin to wear, I send them back to Direct Sound for refurbishment.Wish list: (1) After several hours on an airplane, they begin to feel too tight around my ears. (2) They work best for blocking out the middle and high frequency noise. Meanwhile, electronic noise cancellation technology works well with the low frequencies. This is a great opportunity: Noise cancellation should be incorporated in Direct Sound's next product.

              A drummer's must have!

              By Anonymous

              from Undisclosed

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I recently bought my second pair of EX 29 Extreme Isolation Headphones. When I tried them on they did not fit as well as the old pair that I had. As a result, I contacted Direct Sound and communicated with John Gresko to explained my concerns. He promptly and without hesitation wanted to make sure I was a satisfied customer. I returned the headphones to him and he immediately fixed the problem and even went further to make sure they were returned to me ?better? that what I asked for. As a drummer I have never come across a more superior product to isolate the unnecessary ambient noise and high decibel of the drums which can be so damaging to the ears to allow me to focus on the rest of the instruments and vocals. No drummer or any other musician who wants to isolate sound and protect their ears should look any further than these headphones. I also have never come across a company and it?s representatives that stand behind their product and put customer satisfaction at this high of a priority as Direct Sound.

Great headphones easy to repair later on down the road.
This is the new style, screw on tip / nicer headband
I don't believe you will find any better quality for the same price.
What I like best is the manufacture support for buying replacement parts.
Had my last pair for 5 years and replaced the drivers and headband as well as ordered a new pair from musician's friend. Quality is great I use them in my studio for most all purposes they break down low frequencys drums, bass, ect.
Just buy a pair you can't beat the value.

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

The best isolation headphones on the market, hands down. Fit is excellent, sound quality can't be beat, and their customer service is awesome! I've been using the EX-29s for over 5 years now, and they're still rockin'! Had a couple of plastic hinges snap, but John at Direct Sound was always there to help. Their website even has a section for replacement parts, which makes any necessary self-repair easy as pie! Here's a trick, to hear more of your kit and less of the music, just slip them slightly off your ears, and voila! This will also let more high-end from your kit come through. If you own a JamHub, these are a no-brainer! You certainly get what you pay for. Happy drumming!

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

              Awful
Sound was passable though lacking in mids and bass a little.
But the frame was horrible plastic and the head band snapped the second time I used it. They're a snug fit so you have to pull them out as you get them on (not unlike most closed back headphones) and it popped like peanut brittle.Horrible. Avoid
Really expensive for an average sound and cheap build.
