OVERVIEW

Hear what you need to hear clearly without ear-damaging levels or outside distractions.

The Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones are used by super-star artists Terry Bozzio, Shawn Drover of Megadeth, and preferred by the world famous Blue Man group. Ideal for many listening environments; the EX-29s allow drummers to record œlive drums alongside a mixer, studio musicians to hear their cue mix above the instruments, front of the house engineers to monitor with comfort throughout live performances, engineers to utilize them for mic placement, and one ear isolation allows DJs to listen to both CDs and speakers for pure beat mixing. Many features make the Direct Sound EX-29 sound isolation headphones so extreme. The earmuffs are specially designed to reduce ambient sound by an average of 28 decibels while the custom-fitted speaker assembly is designed to guard your eardrums and enhance your performing and recording experience.Exceptionally true sound is provided through advanced an-isotropic magnet drivers and a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz. Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme headphones fold for ease of storage and portability, and offer the convenience of dual behind-the-ear cords to avoid interfering with your instruments and performance. Not only for drummers, the Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones are ideal for stage and studio musicians, sound engineers, project studios, or simply quiet listening at home.

I use this to play my drums with my iPod. This was bought to replace using a combination of iPod earbuds and over-the-ear sound dampening earphones which was NOT comfortable but allowed the perfect mix of iPod music to drums without killing my ears. These EX-29's sound WAY better than the earbuds and are WAY more comfortable, however they do not lower the volume of the drums as much. From all my research, the EX-29's are the best product out there for my application, however I wish they made some that had a higher decible reduction. Also, if you move your head while wearing them, they tend to let in alot more noise presumabely because the seal is broken around the ear... I find it a challenge to hold my head still while drumming! Overall I am pleased and WOULD buy them again, and would upgrade to higher decible reduction if they made them.

I use these for live shows\pracitce and find them to do the trick. Expecially helpful when stage monitor mix just doesn't cut it. Sound isolation is good...sometimes too extreme....but if you play hard rock]metal or any extremly loud music, they will do great.

However....i find the contruction cheezy. Lots of plastic...and sort of flimbsy. In fact...be just a little rough with them...and the they break loose from the headphones.
In terms of the sound quality, disappointed with the lack of kick or low end that can be pushed though these. (or just maybe i'm just deaf now ...so i have to turn everything up louder than most bandmembers....prob not MY pair of Sony MDR's sound TONS BETTER and are MUCH MORE DURABLE...and yes i would use them..but the isoation is not strong enough..

The cord is also kind of cheesy...i'm waiting for it to break anyday....(i've had these for a couple of years...and have used them at least a hundred times.)

Bottom line: They serve me well... But I'd expect more considering the price

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

Now that I've given these a good workout, I feel like I know them well enough to review them.

First off, their main calling card: attenuation of external noise. They do, indeed, attenuate outside noise. But I can't really say that they offer much more attenuation than my other headphones (Sennheiser HD280, HD380). I still have to crank them up pretty loud to hear the mix while tracking drums or a raging JCM800 in my home studio. I didn't do any scientific tests on their actual attenuation, so just take this as one guy's anecdotal evidence.

But what I immediately noticed is that they do an exceptional job of keeping the monitor mix sounds out of my sensitive condenser microphones. So while recording vocals, acoustic guitars, or even quiet parts of drum tracks, I don't get metronome or click track leakage into the microphones. Anybody that has experienced this knows how annoying it can be to have to figure out which track has the audible click leaked onto it and zap it with a gate or other correction. These phones really do keep the mix where it belongs: between the cups and your ears.

As far as their sound quality, they don't have much low end, and they aren't as crisp and detailed as either of my Sennheiser cans. They're also not as sensitive as my other phones, so they won't turn up as loud. But since these are really meant for tracking situations or for use on a loud live stage, they aren't geared towards critical listening.

Comments about EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

Firs of all II am a drummer concerned about protecting my hearing and use isolation headphones when I practice. I recently purchased the EX-29's becuase my other pair of isolation headphones went bad on me. The EX-29's cost 2 X's what I had paid for a set of KAT's. I thought I need to step up a level to a higher end headphone. It turned out to be a mistake and I sent them back. They did not give the same attenuation as the KAT's all thought they claim to give 29db. Nor did they sound as good when practicising with my iPod.

Used these headphones during weekend recording section. The headphones were used to track drums, guitar amp, and bass amp. Used them in a band recording all at once setup as well. I felt I could hear the mix, and get the isolation I needed. After a while, I would forget I was wearing them. The headphones worked out well, did their job!

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

The design is borderline cheap but it does not look bad. I can just imagine the plastic clips that holds the drivers to the headband breaking if not handled with care. Fits perfectly to head and stays in place!! Fantastic noise reduction. The sound produced from the drivers is on par with some of the larger, more well known headphone companies. Highly recommended if looking for a pair of isolation headphones

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

              Near perfect!

These headphones were ordered to try to tame the stage volume durring practice in 1000 sq foot room.

But they are so good using them for tracking vocals, drums, etc... They sound great and the isolation is unbelievable!

Since the first pair have ordered two more, and may get another six for studio.

They sound as good as my sure srh440's and are perfect for tracking.

Don't ever use headphones for mixing, not a wise choice with any headphone!

Comments about Direct Sound EX-29 Extreme Isolation Headphones:

I read all the older reviews from years ago - It seems that there was a manufacturing defect for a few months, but as soon as they realized it they offered a free replacement with a much sturdier headband. They will replace those broken headbands without question, for free, for anyone who was unfortunate to get one. I love my Extreme Isolation headphones, and I am happy to give my business to someone who stands behind their product.

I used to be a KLH 141 guy in the studio, loved the isolation, sound quality and durability, then the price went up and the quality went down. I see a lot of engineers using Sonys in the studio, but they sound awful and fall apart so easily. When I found the Direct Sound EX-29s I was very happy, they sound great, give great isolation, put up with punishment and they are very comfortable.

I wear them on airplanes to save my ears with the 29dB of noise reduction, and they are comfortable enough where I can keep them on for a long flight and forget I'm wearing them.

I still have my original pair of EX-25s, the lighter pair, they are that durable, unlike the Sonys that might fall apart if you stare at them too long.

Of course what really sold me on them was the exceptional sound quality. The quality holds up to headphones that are two or three times the price.

I am also a "buy American" kind of guy when possible, and these are made by a couple of guys in Missouri who I always see at AES conventions. They go to other shows too, so you can meet them, chat with them. They are really nice guys and dedicated to producing a quality product.

These headphones get my top rating, both for studio and personal use.
