For vocals...

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I've seen a lot of people mention instrumental uses for this, and some even say that they're not sure how it works for vocals...So, for you information, this is a microphone heavily used by Thom Yorke, Radiohead's vocalist, for both recording and performance. So there ya' go, vocalists.

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I have tried many condenser and dynamic microphones in my career and just to mention some the Neumann M147, Shure KSM44 and SM7B, Audio-Technica AT3035, Sterling Audio ST66,Apex 460, etc. .... No microphone has given me such good results as the RE20. Quiet, Fat,Pleasant and Colorful Tone, good Transient content and Beautiful Vintage Look. To my ears the RE20 has the best tone for the money. On Vocals,Violin,Bass, etc. truly is almost impossible to sound bad. RE20 is a "work horse" in my Studio.
Simple and effective
Always the best result

Studio Excellence

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

Being a 17 year radio vet and working for a dozen or so stations, I have logged a lot of time with the RE20 (as well as many other mics). The RE20 is a champ. It sounds really good on almost everybody. I also own my own production studio, and while some people sound better on a good condenser mic, I always test them on the RE20 first, more times than not they sound better on the EV. It's my benchmark. There is a reason why this mic has been the industry standard for decades. You just can't go wrong having one of these in your microphone locker.

Believe it or not... a great mic for VO

By Yoda117

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I've had the pleasure of doing professional voiceovers for a few years now, and this is one of the staples of the dynamic mic market. For the price, the RE-20 is one of the nicest sounding mics I have run across. It's not as warm as a R0de or Neumann (I don't expect as much of that quality from a dynamic mic), but it had a really clean and forgiving nature to it (although I find the RE-27 to be a bit more forgiving). For doing home VO (or if you need an inexpensive backup for your professional studio), broadcasting, or podcasting, you can't go wrong with this mic. There's a reason that it has been a staple mic for the past 20 years.

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

Know that this mic is a pro studio standard for Bass Drum. Also the lead vocals on Bob Dylan's Blood on the tracks was cut with this. Also the lead vocals for the Clash's Combat Rock. After the SM57 and the SM58 this is the next dynamic you will want for a studio.

Great Mix

By Burkeville

from Vancouver Canada

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I haven't used a new one so I am not sure if they have cut the quality like some other mic, but the two old ones I have are amazing. I use them for kick and trumpet mostly, and it works really well. I also have used it for bass amps and prefer it for floor toms.

great vocal condenser

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I have a Neumann u87, a Sennheiser 414, and a Rhode nt-1a. When it comes to recording male voices, this is my preferred mic. It is the industry standard for radio, but for all you podcasters out there, it's probably not worth the dough--save your self some cash and get a large diaphragm condenser.

Great VO Mic

By Rex

from Dallas, TX

See all my reviews

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I had been mic shopping for a bit now, and while some folks in the biz may say that this mic is NOT for VO use...i disagree COMPLETELY! This mic has held up to the riggers of the broadcast industry for years and is in production rooms across the country. This being because the quality of this mic beats others to the punch. If you have the cash, this mic is the way to go. Along with a good processor, your sound will reign supreme among audiophiles every where.

It's the Standard Broadcast Radio Mic For a Reason

By j swift

from Jesup GA

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

It's clean, prox effect is minimal unless you're right on it; However, I think most singers/musicians are not familiar with it, because you don't often see it anywhere but in a radio studio. It's really good for spoken word; I've never really seen it used for singers.

Great mic!

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

I've used this mic in the studio for a variety of applications. It works on the kick drum, or on toms. It's really cool on a guitar amp for some applications. If you want the rich, gooey mids and bottom, but with enough high end to still sound tight, then the RE20 is magic. If you want to brighten the sound up and thin it out, then use another mic.And finally, I've used it on vocals. It's not for everybody, but for a deeper male voice, it has an amazing presence, rich and bright. An excellent microphone with lots of vibe.

Comments about Electro-Voice RE20 Dynamic Cardioid Microphone:

It's a great mic. I don't need to repeat what many others have said. It's great for male voices, and for saxophone (the main reason I bought it). However, it is a low-powered mic, and needs a pre amp. They don't tell you this in any of the documentation, which I find strange. I bought a Cloudlifter and it works great. But it did make the mic more expensive, because it was fairly useless without the gain booster.
